? on Metz 45CL-4

I just acquired a copy of Metz 45CL-4 (S/N 427437 if that matters). It includes a simple sync cord with PC connector and an SCA 3000C M1 cord. The SCA 3000C M1 cord needs some sort of camera-specific module.

Having a few copies of the 45CT series, I know the it does not support Pentax DSLRs. But I don't know anything about the 45CL series.

- Is there a module for the 45CL-4 that can be used with the current batch of Pentax DSLRs?

- What specific features the module gives me vs using the simple sync cord?

Thanks.

You can basically use all of the Pentax SCA AF modules, the old 3701 and the later 3702 up to the current 3702M2. But there is no advantage to buy the latest modules, as it does not support any camera-to-flash communications. The old (and cheap secondhand) 3701 module will provide the same functionality.

Thanks Ben. I have a few more questions:

On KEH, I see 3701 and 3701 M3, same price. Which one should I buy? You wrote "it does not support any camera-to-flash communications." means the module and the 3000C cord does not provide anything more than sync signal (same as the simple sync cord)?

Basically yes, the same functionality as the simple PC cord. But the 3000C cord also has the AF illuminator built in, which does work. The principle is, that everything the sophisticated 3000C adapter does on its own is useable by the camera. You can even switch off the flash and use the Spot Beam mode on its own. There is one thing, I cannot verify now and which I cannot remember, that is whether the flash confirmation/flash ready light in the viewfinder is triggered by that flash combo.

For the SCA adapters: if they are the same price, always go for the latest version, namely the 3701M3, instead of the M1. It is younger if nothing else.

If the spot beam works on a 37xx adapter, that'd be a nice feature...if you do get that, post back and let us know how well that works...

Thanks, Folks.

Placed an order for the 3701 M3. Will report back when I have a chance to test it out.

Hi Soldbear!

I used the 45 CL-4 with my DS and K10D with a direct non-ttl connection (I do not have them with me as I am on holiday, but next week I can give you the two model codes).

Before I tried I had verified with Metz and Pentax that it is safe with DSLR's

EDIT: The CT-4 is not safe however, like you said. The CT4 is safe, it is the older CT1 that wasn't. sorry for the false information.

FYI! If you have a Ist D or DS, you can get the TTL enabled adapter and cable to give TTL support as both these DSLR's have the TTL module!

Metz wrongly convinced me to get the manual adapter, as they supposed my DS could not have TTL support, even though I told them it did lol
