Challenge #135 - History
Posted By: atupdate, 05-29-2010, 05:11 AM

One of my favorite places to shoot in Dayton, OH is a working historical farm at one of the Metro Parks. It offers farming items from the late 1800's, volunteers in period dress that show you how they farmed back in the old days, and farm animals for the kids.

Your challenge is to go through your archive and find some history. It can be a picture of an old item, a reenactment of a historical event, or an era in time that is special for you.

I'll post a couple of examples in the next thread.

Good luck to all.

Tim

Challenge Starts: NOW

Challenge Ends: Saturday, June 6th @ 12-noon server time.

The fine print....
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread, and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera will do or a Samsung DSLR.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.

This is my friend's father's first truck. It's a 1939 Dodge truck. His Father had passed away a year prior and he had asked if I would be willing to take some shots of the first vehicle his Father ever owned: this old Dodge truck. So off the the old family farm we went one morning this past November. I had never been asked to do any kind of specific shoot before so I was pretty nervous about it. I bought a wide angle lens for the trip as I figured it would come in handy. I took a lot of shots at various angles...and I picked my 2 favorites and had them enlarged, printed and mounted so I could give them to him as a Christmas present. When he opened the gift and saw them he had tears in his eyes. I had tears in my eyes too when I saw his reaction.

Here is one of the two:

Here's mine. Sloop Clearwater, an exact replica of the Hudson River sloops that were the main cargo carriers on the river (and Long Island Sound for that matter) in the mid 19th century. Today her main cargo is school children, educating them on the ecology of the Hudson river.

8 entries so far. I would expect a challenge subject as open as this one to pass the 20 entry mark easily. Now get looking through your files.

Endangered sentinals - grain elevators

Once a familiar landmark on the prairie landscape, few grain elevators remain. In 2001, the residents of Nanton, a small town south of Calgary, Alberta united to save and restore their three grain elevators.
