Weekly 115 - Photo of the week 23 May - 6 June 2010
Posted By: Tamia, 05-30-2010, 05:12 AM

Welcome to 115th edition of the Pentax Forum's Picture of the Week! This edition covers photos taken between 23 May and 6 June 2010.

Thanks to Lisa (casil403) for hosting last week, and for passing the baton to me this time. This was her first time as host of POTW, so tip her a nod for her great job.

POTW is a great place to show what you're shooting day-to-day with your Pentax cameras. It gives us all a chance to virtually visit with one another, to get a glimpse of what it's like where others live and where they've been, and to extend the same invitation to others to share what we've been seeing.

Summer is officially launched here in the northern hemisphere, but our southern hemisphere counterparts are heading into their winter. It's a good time to compare the shoulder seasons from each part of the globe. So take your camera out and shoot some photos to share round with fellow Pentaxians!

Again same rules as before:

1) No theme, just post your favourite pix.

2) Let's keep it to under 6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.

3) Any Pentax camera or Samsung SLR is fine, whether it's film, P&S, or DSLR.

4) Date: Sunday 23 May 2010 to Sunday 6 June 2010. Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes. Old shots with a new look from post-processing during the open time period are also welcome.

5) The current host will appoint the new host as an invitation via PM. If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact Peter Zack, Moderator via PM.

Ready? Great! Shoot and post!

Joe (jmschrei), those are unusual blooms to me. What are they? Beautiful color. Looking forward to seeing photos from Banff!
Thanks for asking, Tamia, I had to hunt to find an answer. They are blue clematis (clematis occidentalis) or commonly "western blue virgin's bower" - great name. They typically grow in wooded areas especially on slopes. Apparently there is a purple variant that might be found closer to where you live.

Banff is planned for tomorrow and so far weather looks somewhat better than it has been (fingers crossed).

Thanks, Joe. I've heard of clematis, not you mention the name. I'll check my guidebooks and keep a lookout. Enjoy your trip!

I'll say, Robin! No witches, but there were a pair of aggressive beasts that rhyme with twitches, wanting to take a bite out of me just after I snapped the photos. Their owner was spaced out and didn't call them back, but they gave up.

Very nice photo, Laura. Such delicacy, and the pale seed cases(?) contrast beautifully with the bold background. Welcome aboard, and thanks for posting here. Hope to see you come back often as you get to know and enjoy your new camera.

Thanks! It's looking a little grainy; I did a quick and dirty size conversion to get it to attach and I guess I need to fire up some decent tools if I'm going to participate here in earnest

Looks pretty good to me.

For the sharpest possible picture, be sure to set your camera to record the highest number of pixels. I didn't realize mine (the K200D) was set for medium ("Better") number of recorded pixels when I first bought it, and boosting it to "Best JPEG Quality" made a big difference.

Fries, charming photo of the gulls. The one on the right seems bored.
Thanks Tamia! Here is one who isn't that easily bored; the world is still very much a new place for this little one.

Well, I'll just say we have some really great photos this week. I haven't found anything I would like to post until today.

My Great-niece was in the back yard with her bubbles and I thought, what the heck, I'd try to capture some. Below are best ones before her 13 year old brother decided to pop them before I could get focused.

That's my back yard and house in the reflections.

Thanks Tamia. The ND filters can be fun. I got them in a mixed lot on Ebay awhile ago. They were brand new, still sealed Hoya MC 2,4 & 8 ND's. The regular price tags were still on them $69.99 each. I sold off all the other stuff from the auction and kept a small profit and these for nothing. Problem was, they are 58mm which isn't a common Pentax lens size.

So I finally decided to buy some stepping rings. They don't vignette until above 67mm. Fun to use though.

Here's another few from this evening (no ND's) K10D and FA50mm f2.8 macro

Lacrosse.

Here are a couple I took yesterday. I coach a Peewee team here in town. So I decided to take a few shots from the bench. A coaches view.

Fries, you've done a great job capturing the vulnerability and soft "newness" of the chick. I love the subtle colors and speckled appearance of his downy feathers and of the egg holding his sibling still unhatched.

Mar, I agree, we're off to a great start. Glad to see another bubble shot. They're lovely. They remind me of those "viewing spheres" people put on pedestals in their yards.

Thanks for the compliment, Lisa.

Peter, you got a fabulous deal on those ND filters. I've not bought a stack because of their high price. I should look more carefully for used ones. And I never heard of stepping rings -- thanks for that tip. I really like your dandelion pictures. One of my favorite subjects.

James (Jimbow007), terrific action shots of a rough game. I like the second one with the guy in yellow looking into the eyes of his opponent. Well done.

Here are three emphasizing light. This first one I shot for the P52:Technology challenge.

Filaments

Cross-currents

Fluid Constellations Underexposed when shooting the base of a small waterfall, reminds me of the stars twinkling over a lit hillside.
