P52-3-1 Architecture - Old
Posted By: Rense, 07-24-2010, 07:30 AM

We will start the new, third year of Project 52 with a couple of weeks around the
theme 'Architecture'. The first week we'll concentrate on OLD
subjects. I think it is not very difficult to image what is meant with that, eh?

Time Frame: pictures for week 1 are to be taken and posted between
20100731 and 20100808, so from July 31th - August 8th, 2010.

Rules:
1. Anyone and everyone who is interested in eligible. The goal continues to be
have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques with fellow
Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a Theme and Sub-concept for you to explore.
3. Post your single picture in Project 52-3 thread for the week. Explain what
motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly
theme.
4. Some post-processing is OK (adjusting white balance, exposure, color
saturation), but let's try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images here. Try to
keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. Since this project is about technique, and not camera, shots taken by nonPentax
cameras are allowed
. Cameras can be SLRs, DSLRs, Point & Shoot and Medium Format.
6. There is one “Theme Concept” labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post
black and white, sepia, monotone, etc.
, for any of the other themes.
7. The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is
active
to be eligible for judging.
8. Any picture taken from 20100731 to listed closing date is acceptable for the two
“Seasonal” competitions – Projects 52-3-51 & 52.

Additional Information, including the scheme with subjects: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/mini-challenges-games-photo-stories/10506...-year-3-a.html

I hope we'll have a good year together!

Old? Here in Phoenix/Scottsdale (Arizona), we do not have anything old old, so I'll have to do with some retro-architecture - faux Spanish mission architecture. This photo is from a small restaurant/business center a few hundred meters from where I live. I'm happy I went on this project 52-3 photoshoot today because I discovered a new Indian restaurent in the center!

Faux or nouveau, that is an excellent composition. I like.
And the mention of an Indian restaurant nearby, geez! where does the tantalizing end?
You are lucky, a hundred meters away.... I gotta drive about 90 miles to get to the closest Indian eatery.

I don't know how old this building is but I wouldn't call it new. It's an industrial facility of some kind which I shot on my way to work.

There isn't much in the way old architecture here where I live, with the oldest buldings dating back only to the beginning of the last century, and so many have been hacked about with ugly vinyl siding that they're uninspiring. Instead, I decided to go with one of the oldest forms of architecture anywhere, which was sparkling in the sun. I'm speaking of a spider web, and the builder is in the far upper left corner keeping five eyes on the comings and goings:

Old is relative, this would probably not qualify in Europe. I live in Western part of Ohio, USA. This area was settled in the early to mid 19th century and had a lot of growth in the later part of that century when oil was found. Before the growth period most of the buildings were wooden and have not lasted. This building is called the Metropolitan Block and was built in 1890. In the foreground is the steps to the courthouse and a cannon in the courthouse yard, across the street from the building.

Lovely, Tamia.
I am in the same quandary, nothing around my corner of the earth or in my daily outings says old architecture according to the idea in my head.
Maybe I am just over thinking this.

Great entries thus far! I agree: old in the New World is probably not as old as old in Eurazia. But the examples I see here are no examples of modern architecture, so for me, they qualify as old...

Here is my entry for week 1, Architecture Old.
This photo is a shot of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Established in 1876, this museum is one of the largest in the United States. Its located at the end of the Ben Franklin Parkway. It is also home to the famous Rocky Statue!

Thomas Viaduct 175th Anniversary

The Thomas Viaduct was completed in 1835. It is the world's largest multiple arched stone railroad bridge with an arc (4 deg). It is still in daily use carrying loads much heavier than it was imagined it would ever hold. The engineer who designed it was the son of the architect of the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, DC.

Okay, here's my entry. I planned something completely different, but I couldn't find time. This
one was shot on Thursday, "just in case".... Well, this is the case, I guess. It's a detail of the
"Grote Kerk" (Main church, also called the Church of John the Baptist) at the market in
Wageningen, where I work (and our judge this weeks lives ). At this place a church was
built in the 13th Century, but during the 16th and 17th Century it was "renovated", and in
time, all kinds of new parts were built. During WW II it was heavily damaged, and the tower
had to be rebuilt completely. In the church, a glass stained window reminds of the heavy battles
during WW II.

This photo represents one of the oldest parts, at the east side of the church, but in the
background the new tower is clearly visible.
