Weekly Challenge: 142 The 'hood
Posted By: NaClH2O, 07-26-2010, 09:15 AM

If you are like me you feel that you need to go somewhere to practice your photography. Get in the car, drive to the park, go to the city, somewhere away from where you live. What I would like to see instead is shots taken within a short walk from your house/apartment. You don't need to go far for good photos, they can be out your window or just around the corner. I don't care what the subject is, it can be abstract, street photography, architecture...whatever. Just so that it is no further than a short walk away from your door.

Contest will end midnight EST Tuesday Aug 3.

The fine print....
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread, and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera will do or a Samsung DSLR.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.

Previous Challenge Subjects:

This guy likes to visit the retention pond in our subdivision. Luckily the ice was thick enough to walk on and get one shot with my DA 50-200.

This grows 10 feet from my back door.

It has green berries on it now, that will turn purple/black before long. I think it's Poke Salad but not sure, guess I need to look it up...

My warped sense of humor yet again-in fact it's surfacing on a concrete bench. Thanks for <3 though

Cool topic and photos. This is one of my favorite "right outside the door" photos, taken early this May.

K7, DA*55

Well since Tamia beat me to posting My Idea , this one will have to do.

To most this is a crappy picture and admittedly I could have done better if I used a wider lens (couldn't really back up any more). What it is, is a photo of the entrance to the Norfolk Southern (formerly Wabash RR in this area) main yard. The Light tower in the photo is one that I could see from my bedroom window at my grandmother's house as a child. If I drew a line from where I was standing through the tower base and past the trees in the distance, that is where the house stands.

Being a big believer in local communities and sustainability, I shoot an awful lot of photos within walking distance of my front door. I think it can take a long time to get to the point where one can take a shot that says something real. And I also enjoy finding interest and even beauty in the discarded and the overlooked. So I shoot lots of peeling paint, graffiti, architectural elements, macros and so on.

Sometimes, though, an environmental portrait is the best way to tell you about where I live. This is from our local market, taken last Saturday.

In my neighbourhood there are 2 parks. This one is in the next street and I like to refer to it as the little park. Dog owners like to take their pets here but aren't always mindful of others and don't collect the droppings left behind.

Here's a different sort of shot to kick off the thread for me. And then a standard sort of shot for contrast.
Robin, do you want to use the horse as your entry or the dahlias?
