P52-3-3 Architecture: Graveyard
Posted By: Rense, 08-12-2010, 01:04 PM

The third week of this third year of Project 52 we will continue shooting
'Architecture', but well focus on the more sombre side of life:
graveyards. I've got the impression many photogs like shooting
graveyards, so I expect many entries this week!

Time Frame: pictures for week 3 are to be taken and posted between
20100814 and 20100822, so from August 14th - August 22nd, 2010.

Rules:
1. Anyone and everyone who is interested in eligible. The goal continues to be
have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques with fellow
Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a Theme and Sub-concept for you to explore.
3. Post your single picture in Project 52-3 thread for the week. Explain what
motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly
theme.
4. Some post-processing is OK (adjusting white balance, exposure, color
saturation), but let's try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images here. Try to
keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. Since this project is about technique, and not camera, shots taken by nonPentax
cameras are allowed
. Cameras can be SLRs, DSLRs, Point & Shoot and Medium Format.
6. There is one “Theme Concept” labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post
black and white, sepia, monotone, etc.
, for any of the other themes.
7. The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is
active
to be eligible for judging.
8. Any picture taken from 20100731 to listed closing date is acceptable for the two
“Seasonal” competitions – Projects 52-3-51 & 52.

Additional Information, including the scheme with subjects: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/mini-challenges-games-photo-stories/10506...-year-3-a.html

I hope we'll have a good year together!

Wow. Love your entry Corey. The tone, subject matter, and framing are spot on. Love it even more that you're using the K100D, which is the camera I'm saving up to buy. (Unless you took the shot with the 7D that is)

Shot at Fredericksburg National Cemetary in Virginia. I am temporarily stationed here in Northern Virginia and take any excuse and opportunity I can to head out to learn more about history and of course take some photographs. I thought it would be interesting to take a picture from the perspective of these small headstones, many of which are for unknown soldiers.

This graveyard has many granite "wells" from which one can take water to flowers on the graves.

I went to an old Jewish graveyard in Wageningen today!
It is closed for visitors, but you can easily take a look through the fence (and take pictures).
It was used from 1669 until 1929 and became a national monument in 1967!

This is one of the pictures I took with my Helios.

My entry for this week. The cemetery at Immaculata University.

I had a tough time with the theme this week. The primary theme is architecture, so that had me scratching my head a little bit. So I'm that guy that went and looked up the definition of architecture in a dictionary. I found a particular phrase that caught my attention "...constructions and environments, usually with some regard to aesthetic effect."

Every time I drive past this cemetery, which is quite often on my way to lunch from work, I take note at how pretty it looks. The uniformity of the headstones, while low and not themselves pleasing to the eye, create a nice visual collectively.

Old Salem Cemetery

Here's my entry since it's a bit more architectural.

Okay, probably I'll come up with something else, but for now this is my entry. The weather is
deteriorating here, so I don't know if my plans for this afternoon will be spoiled or not.

This is shot yesterday, in the St. Janskerk in Gouda (St. John's Church). It's world famous for its
stained glasses from the 16th century, but there are also people buried in the church, as was usual
in former days for the wealthy. I know, it's not a graveyard in the strict sense of the word, but there
are graves. I chose to include some life in the photo, just to make the contrast.

The way you have captured the sense of tentativeness in her step sets a striking mood and contrast. Personally I like this entry (but I'm not voting).

I find it hard to focus on the architectural part this week. On our local graveyard there are hardly any buildings. The graveyard itself has originally been designed by the landscape gardener L.A. Springer at the end of the 19th century. Beacuse there are many trees it isn't possible to make an overview.
The picture I selected is one of kind of cabinet with burial urns. I do like the simplicity of it.

I like it too...and I AM voting!

also, JanVan, very nice entry! I agree on the simplicity and I like the unique take on cemetery there.

John, that is definitely "architecture" in a graveyard! well done!

still several hours left for everyone to get a final image in. i'll start the judging at some point tomorrow around 12PM NY time.

I wanted a shot of an old tombstone with a raven sitting on top in a thick fog, that did not happen. So instead I'll show these tombstones at Fort Amanda, Ohio. These are all military headstones from the War of 1812 Fort/Supply Depot along the Auglaize River. All of these soldiers were buried in 1813, dying from diseases. These stones were arranged in nice neat rows, but after 197 years most are leaning and some even toppled.

I really meant to go out today and take pictures to submit here, but unfortunately it didn't happen. Some great entries!
