Weekly Challenge #144 - Garbage
Posted By: wllm, 08-19-2010, 01:25 PM

Garbage

A bit of a contrast with the last challenge that showed us lots of lovely natural green colors.
In what kind of a throw it away/consumption world do we live....? Show it!
But if possible, show all these ugliness in a beautiful way, for instance with short DOF, interesting POV, B&W, HDR ……..
Use your imagination, your camera, your favorite lens, your computer and PP software, good luck and have fun.

This challenge will end Thursday Aug 26 at midnight EST.

The fine print....
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread, and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera will do or a Samsung DSLR.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.

I've taken a few vacations involving driving on portions of historic Route 66, which is lightly used and in some places abandoned. This is a stretch north of Devore, Calif. Here, Route 66 use to follow Cajon Blvd, seen in the distance. This segment of "The Mother Road" winds through a little canyon behind me before rejoining the 15 Freeway and going up Cajon Pass.

Sh*theads made a dump.

Wow, SpecialK, this brings back memories.

I use to work for the SB Sun covering SB county and this picture reminds me of some of the gems I saw in the Inland Empire.
Thanks for the memories.

Great topic, Wllm. I'm so discouraged by the amount of trash that I began a monthly feature on it on my website in hopes of shaming people who do it. Here's my entry. I was scrambling on the banks of the local river, which is beautiful as it flows through the woods. I was shooting photos from various prospects when I came round a spur of rock and saw this view. The slobs who carried in the beer couldn't work up the energy to carry out the empties.

I agree with you it's a crime, Jools. Your photo reminds me of a local cemetery where they throw the plastic flowers and urns into the hedgerow along the border at the back side of the cemetery. There's even a bed mattress and bedspring back there, and a discarded television. It's a graveyard in more ways than one.

Some people just never learn the damage they can do.

I must confess that I am new to how cemeteries work. But I guess I am not surprised by your interesting description.
The funny thing is that the sign in my picture (which we see from behind) reads "No Littering". Go figure.

I can't say I have any pictures of garbage. However, it turns up all the time as a photo bomb in many of our shots and in trying to "capture the moment" it can't be avoided. In this shot, my daughter is saying a last goodbye to a classmate following graduation this spring. Unfortunately, the "moment" was right after cleaning out the dorm room and the dumpster will keep this one from getting printed in the album.
