P52-3-4 Architecture: Streetview
Posted By: Rense, 08-20-2010, 03:55 AM

The fourth week of this year of Project 52 will be our last
'Architecture' week. After "old", "modern", and "graveyard", we will focus
on what I called: streetview. No details of buildings, statues or
headstones, or whatever, but I want to see impressions of how architecture fits in,
or forms the environment. Just to clarify: it's still about architecture, not about
life on the streets, and seeing street is not obligatory, of course.

Time Frame: pictures for week 4 are to be taken and posted between
20100821 and 20100829, so from August 21st - August 29th, 2010.

Rules:
1. Anyone and everyone who is interested in eligible. The goal continues to be
have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques with fellow
Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a Theme and Sub-concept for you to explore.
3. Post your single picture in Project 52-3 thread for the week. Explain what
motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly
theme.
4. Some post-processing is OK (adjusting white balance, exposure, color
saturation), but let's try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images here. Try to
keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. Since this project is about technique, and not camera, shots taken by nonPentax
cameras are allowed
. Cameras can be SLRs, DSLRs, Point & Shoot and Medium Format.
6. There is one “Theme Concept” labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post
black and white, sepia, monotone, etc.
, for any of the other themes.
7. The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is
active
to be eligible for judging.
8. Any picture taken from 20100731 to listed closing date is acceptable for the two
“Seasonal” competitions – Projects 52-3-51 & 52.

Additional Information, including the scheme with subjects: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/mini-challenges-games-photo-stories/10506...-year-3-a.html

Have fun shooting!

Just to give you an idea I post a photo I shot last year in London. It's called "Streets of London".

There is something very claustrophobic about that photo Rense. Is that what London feels like or is some aspect of that effect due to the perspective of the lens used? It is certainly a powerful image.

I think it was Rense's "Inception" moment...

It's due to the perspective, combined with the pp, I guess....
I decided to do something similar yesterday, when I visited Scheveningen, a small fishers village that was turned into a mondaine bath resort, alias suburb of The Hague. Hardly anything reminds of the old days here....

Thanks Rense! The cavernous effect is probably also partly due to the much narrower streets in European cities. Out here in the wild west our streets are much wider (more room for the SUV), even downtown. I know exactly where I want to shoot for this challenge but it will have to wait until later in the week.
Your examples are great, I am looking forward to seeing what others come up with.

Here's my entry, a typical view of rural hamlets (very small unincorporated settlements) in northern New York state. The old homes are peeling paint, some are abandoned to rot as people can no longer pay the taxes, and others are covered in vinyl and chopped up into tiny apartments which are rented to desperate people who must drive an hour one way to find minimum wage work. You can't buy the makings of a decent meal for your family, but you can buy gas, smokes, soda, beer, and snacks. (Click for larger view.)

Great shot Tamia, I like how the off horizon adds to the feeling!

Not for judging, took it weeks ago, just wanted to share and figured it fit the theme pretty well.

Wow, looks like Tamia owns this one so far. Great shot! I do have my "just in case" shot but it is more interesting sociologically than photographically so I am hoping I can do better tomorrow morning.

Waiting for a Friend

Had a hard time deciding which shot to use...some had more architecture, some had more feeling. Couldn't believe how few people were out and about downtown today, but here's a shot looking down 4th street in Winston Salem. Learning new PP software so hope I didn't over sharpen, etc.

Rense, Tamia, and John, all nice shots. I look forward to seeing what everyone else contributes to this theme. Here is mine, for now, I might head back into the city again tomorrow.

This was shot last night, probably my favorite block of Philadelphia so far...I still have a lot of exploring to do. It is amazing how many beautiful buildings there are in Philly hidden behind/beneath the concrete giants reaching into the sky. Here is a shot of City Hall, which you wouldn't otherwise see much of unless you get up close. I was longing for a wider lens in a bad way.
