Photo of the Week #128, August 22 - September 5, 2010
Posted By: ohce, 08-29-2010, 11:05 AM

Welcome to the 128th edition of the Pentax Forum's Picture of the Week!
This edition covers photos taken between August 22th and September 5th, 2010, or shots from last week you haven't processed until now.

Thanks to woof for hosting last week and thanks for choosing me as the host.

POTW is a great place to show what you're shooting day-to-day with your cameras. It gives us all a chance to see what other members are up to with their Pentax cameras in their parts of the world in which they live or have visited. We can share ideas and hopefully learn from one another which is great too!

So show us what you've seen in your little corner of the planet! I look forward to seeing all of what's out there this week.

Again same rules as before:

1) No theme, just post your favorite pix.

2) Let's keep it to under 6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.

3) Any Pentax camera or Samsung SLR is fine, whether it's film, P&S, or DSLR.

4) Date: Sunday August 22 to Sunday September 5 2010. Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes. Old shots with a new look from post-processing during the open time period are also welcome.

5) The current host will appoint the new host as an invitation via PM. If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact Peter Zack, Moderator via PM.

Previous hosts: Each one is a hotlink to that POTW thread to look past at the previous 117 weeks. 1 Peter Zack, 2Eaglerapids 3 rmtagg, 4 Peter Zack, 5 daacon, 6 Bramela, 7 mtnbearhug, 8 dantuyhoa, 9 gawan,10 roentarre, 11 daacon, 12 Kris, 13 mtnbearhug, 14 SCGushue, 15 daacon, 16 maxwell1295, 17 dantuyhoa, 18 daacon, 19 maxwell1295 19(2) daacon, 20 Bramela, 21 Syb, 22 maxwell1295, 23 maxwell1295, 24 dantuyhoa, 25 Gawan, 26 Peter Zack, 27 borno, 28 daacon, 29 gawan, 30 Damn Brit, 31 maxwell1295 32 maxwell1295 , 33 dantuyhoa, 34 daacon, 35 Peter Zack, 36 Damn Brit, 37 Borno, 38 Kevint, 39 Peter Zack, 40 Timbo13, 41 daacon, 42 daacon, 43 gawan, 44 dantuyhoa, 45 daacon, 46 Rense, 47 daacon, 48 Rense, 49 borno, 50 Rense, 51 daacon, 52 Peter Zack, 53 Peter Zack, 54 dadipentax, 55 David Whiteley, 56 planedriver, 57 daacon,58 Bramela, 59 daacon, 60 gawan, 61 virgilr, 62 daacon, 63 RickL, 64 Peter Zack, 65 Peter Zack, 66 Causey 67 daacon, 68 Bramela, 69 georgeweb, 70 daacon, 71 seacapt, 72 daacon, 73 AOski, 74 Rense 75 eccs19, 76 daacon, 77 xs400, 78 daacon, 79 Bramela, 80 borno, 81 legacyb4, 82 daacon, 83 gawan, 84 Rense, 85 Peter Zack, 86 davef, 87 davef, 88 xjjohnno 89 Bramela , 90 Peter Zack, 91 daacon, 92 stevebrot ,93 reeftool, 94 jezza323, 95 oldschool, 96 Iris, 97 Rense, 98 planedriver, 99 xs400, 100 Peter Zack, 101 Netuser 102 Photolady, 103 Tamia, 104 Irishwhite, 105 Ramseybuckeye, 106 xjjohnno, 107 Bumbibop, 108 JeffJS, 109 Tpeace, 110 Nomad, 111 Photolady, 112 rparmar, 113 Peter Zack, 114 casil403, 115 Tamia 116 JeffJS, 117 bbluesman, 118 Clou, 119 ruggiex, 120 Jimbow007, 121 jmschrie, 122 VaughnA 123 pop4, 124 casil403, 125 woof, 126 twitch, 127 stevebrot, 128 ohce

I was at a friends place on the weekend, and they restore antique cars, anything prior to 1915 is what they specialize in. They have this small model on display. It was a low light shot and it was under plexiglass, so the shot isn't great, but I'm impressed with how well the noise stood up. (iso 3200)

OK I'll try one this time, went out a couple of days ago and go and got a few decent shots, here's one of them. I think it's a variety of Hover Fly but not sure.

That's all I have time for now, might try again later. I know this one is a bit bright, I can't darken it any more without losing detail, it was a really bright day and I guess I should have tried a much smaller aperture. But...didn't know that till later.

No need to adjust this one at all. What a great photo!

That is a great shot. Nice detail, etc. Couldn't ask for a nice shot.

Here are some shots from the weekend. I went to Nose Hill, a large park of native grassland in the city and explored an area I had not yet been to.

I found a patch of what I always called foxtails. These were great for imaginative play when I was a child. We could occupy ourselves for hours with what grew wild in the fields.

have you calibrated your monitor? the picture looks great on mine, certainly wouldnt make it any darker then it would be too dark, maybe your monitor is too bright. when I calibrated mine, one of them was set to 100% brightness and the calibrator software asked me to turn it down to 40% so quite a change. Apparently thats also why people often complain prints are too dark, cause their monitors are too bright.

Am loving the panorama stitching feature and in combination with content aware fill in ps cs5. Never took panos before I got it so now I have something new to experiment with, its really easy to take them when the sw works so well. And being able to remove objects is great, as in the first shot of the ferry there were two thick steel cables going from the top of the boat and down to the gate in the front which were really annoying. Also surprised that it still worked so well considering the ferry was moving.

A trip to the zoo....

A nice sunny day for a nap.
Endangered Sumatran Tiger, but looks quite safe here...

Adelaide's 60 year old Flamingo.

And a gibbon that surprised all the keepers by delivering a few days after this photo. I thought she looked frightened....

Cheers, John

Robin, fascinating images in your Barriers series. Love the textures.

Clou, wonderful series. I particularly like Failed Symmetry. The colored lights (?) contrast beautifully with the neutral walls.

Eccs19, lovely colors and nice crisp shot of a fascinating subject. Shot with the K7? It handles the limitations you mention very well.

Pete, I think that shot is great as it is. It is bright in the background but I don't see that as a detraction. The hover fly is SO sharp and perfect. I'd leave it as it is.

Joe, I love that "foxtail" plant, and they're very nicely captured. I'm impressed that this is a park INSIDE the city. I know where I'd be spending a lot of time if I lived in Calgary.

Andreas, fabulous panos of a beautiful landscape!

John, beautiful series. I like the backlighting on the big cat, and the details of the flamingo. The gibbon does look frightened or forelorn, poor thing.

I've been getting out to scramble the banks of the river, and am intrigued by the colors when the light is just right. Green algae streams from brown rocks in amber water, with orange pebbles, and the brilliant green woods tinged with the hint of autumnal change is reflected on the surface. Here are three:

In the Shallows

Woods Reflected

Shadowplay

oche - thanks for hosting a great start. Particularly like the lighting on the first one.

Andras - good to see you back , planes and boats what are the odds ? Nice series.

Clou - nice series that first one almost has a 3D look to it, and I love the green apple fountain.

VaughnA - Nice streets shot , I am sure a welcomed break after 6 12 hour days!

eccs19 - great closeup of a praying mantis, well done.

jheu02 - that is OOF indeed , I like the look and you definitley still make out what it is.

xjjohnno - ahh to live near open water - nice ship shots (say that fast 10 times)

Mark - nice slice of life once again - love the overall look of #1.

Andras - another good series - so who's flying the plane while you take pictures - like the last one as well.

rparmar - great colors on #1.

reeftool - interesting combo - nice bokeh on that shot.

rparmar - nice 'texture' shots.

Clou - nice minimalistic series - really like #2.

eccs19 - ISO 3200 that is impressive.

Paleo Pete - not sure what that is either , however it a great shot.

jimschrei - nice looking area a little hmlet in the city well done.

and - I love panos and agree the SF is pretty smart (even CS4) great shots.

jackassp - nice zoo shots - 60 years old ? I had no idea they live that long, why he/she does not look a day over 50 !

Tamia - nice colors on the water , the sun must have been shining that day.

I blew a calf muscle on Friday so in recovery mode for hopefully just another week , so these are from last week.

WOW! Awesome start to the week folks!
I spent the weekend out in Penticton BC where my friend took part in Ironman Canada. While he was out on the course in the various stages (swim 2.4miles/3.8km, bike 112miles/180km and run26.2miles/42.2km), I spent my day when not cheering him in around the town looking for other things to photograph.

Here's a few of many!

Clou: "Failed Symmetry" and "Projection - Reflection" -- these truly rock.

Paleo Pete: Absolutely amazing Hover Fly! Out of interest: what lens?

jackassp: Perfect flamingo!

Yeah, but now you've removed the cables the ferry will fall apart.
