Winners: P52-3-6 Focus Selective
Posted By: Iris, 09-14-2010, 02:54 AM

Nice interpretations of this weeks project 52-3-6 focus: Selective.
Thank you all for participating (again). It is nice to see so many regular participants .
And welcome to all the not so regular participants, I hope to see you more often!
Thanks Woof, Nass, JeffJS and Dan for your inspiring examples!

I will comment on (almost) every entry.
I am going to try to be a bit critical (which I definitely find very scary, so please don’t kill me )
and in the end I will declare the winners.

Tom (ramseybuckeye):
It is a not so easy shot with a basket that was turning in the wind and with the edge of the flowers in bright sunlight.
This picture makes me longing for nice weather (which is almost gone here ).
The butterfly is definitely in focus, but I think the bright blue flowers take away the attention from the butterfly.

Lisa (casil403):
The colours and the texture emphasize the softness of your picture.
And I like this very much !
I would have preferred a bit tighter crop, with a smaller out of focus part on the right side,
so the attention is a bit more on the flower.

Joe (jmschrei):
Somehow this picture makes me happy, it gives me a vacation feeling.
I like the colours in this picture very much.
The only minor point of critique I have is that is not a very exciting picture.

Mark (bbluesman):
That looks like a nice place to be with so many flowers.
It’s quite a colourful picture, with an obvious point of focus and a nice out of focus background!
The picture is a bit dark though, I would have preferred a bit brighter version.

John (jheu02):
Yes this picture fits this week’s theme well and I definitely see that the eye is in focus !
I would have liked to see more of the eye and perhaps the front of the head.

Tamia:
Funny to see you have more and more your own style!
It is always obvious which picture is yours and I think that’s a good thing .
I like the colours of this picture. The out of focus spectator emphasize the selective focus part.
I would have preferred if the focus point was on the kayakers head instead of the arm.

Mar (Photolady):
From my own experience, I know that ants are very difficult to shoot, so you did a great job.
I like the colours of your picture. You have a clear focus point in mind,
but with f16 and flash you have a bigger part in focus than I would have liked to see!

Rense:
Your picture is different, as always.
I like the minimalism of the picture and the interesting lighting.
The duality makes the picture a bit more interesting.

Sam (samski_1):
You are very welcome Sam to join project 52! It is a great way to learn new techniques.
Your picture fits the theme very well.
I like the composition of your picture. I hope you will join us next time also!

VaughnA:
I like this picture very much . Your focus point is cleverly chosen,
I started looking in the left upper corner and my eyes scanned most of the picture until I saw the key!
It is quite a busy picture so I am happy you have chosen B&W!

Corey (ceericks):
I like your shot very much ! I love the composition with your little guy
out of focus in the back playing with the new bicycle and his helmet in focus on the ground.
Also nice black and white conversion!

Oula (Ovim):
What to say about this little bird! It is definitely a nice shot, with a clear focus point.
They never stay that still if I am trying !
I like the out of focus green background very much.

Jan (JanVan):
I love coffee and I can almost smell this one!
Nice subject with the coffee-cup in focus and the rest of the picture out of focus.
If you wanted to pay attention to the coffee-cup I would have liked to see the whole cup, including the handle!
Or, if you wanted to emphasize the coffee, you could have chosen that as your focus point!

Bruce (Bramela):
Ha Bruce, nice you are participating again! I hope you find the time and motivation to join us more often!
Regarding your picture, white (or slightly pink) flowers are not always very easy to photograph, so you did a great job.
If you had seen the insect, would you have chosen to put the focus point more to the front?

Tsukiouji:
Nice picture that fits the theme perfectly.
I like the way the picture doesn’t have to much colours, so the few colours in the lens are more obvious.
In my opinion the busy background (which I like btw ), takes away the attention from the lens a bit.

Ohce:
Thanks for participating.
Your exif shows that this picture is taken in 2008, so I will not include it in the judging.

And now the most difficult part of this job!
I found (and still find) it very difficult to choose between the top 3, but I made up my mind.

3rd Place: Corey

2nd Place: Joop Zoetemelk (Rense)

1st Place: VaughnA:

Congratulations VaughnA! You have the honour to judge the next theme!!

Congratulations VaughnA, Rense, and Corey! Brilliant job judging, Iris, and I enjoyed reading your critiques. Thanks for taking time to do this, and I agree with your comment about the focus point on my photo. Darned kayaker. He teetered on the waterfall's lip in the wrong spot. Thanks, too, to all our fellow participants for joining in to make this challenge so much fun.

Congratulations to VaughanA, Rense and Corey for great shots. I agree with the winning choice, it is a worthy winner.
I think a hearty "Well Done" to all entrants is warranted.

Thanks for the comments on my shot. I may have gone for a shot of the insect, but not for this comp maybe, but then again.......

Congrats Corey, Rense and Vaughn. Nice work to all! May have to bring a 28 with me for Deep Focus, as I don't think the 135 I'm shooting with this month is really designed for that one.

Iris,
I don't know why the time is not correct. I did take this picture yesterday which is on Sep 13 using my K200D. I used to take AA batteries out of camera when I don;t use the camera. That could be the reason that the date time is reset every time when I use it.

Anyway, congrats to the winners.

Maybe so...but thinking outside the box is always appreciated!

Wow! Thanks all, I don't think it was the best considering all of the great compositions out there but I'll take it. I haven't won this challenge before (I think it's my first participation in this series) so I'll have to figure out the next one and put it up shortly.

Just so you know, the weekly challenges are planned for the year and Rense posts each one. Your duties as winner is to judge next week's challenge Deep Focus.
