POTW #141 - November 21 - December 5
Posted By: Tamia, 11-28-2010, 06:31 AM

Welcome to the 141th edition of the Pentax Forum's Picture of the Week!

Thanks to Dave for hosting last week and for asking me this week. Enjoy the game, Dave!

This edition covers photos taken between November 21st to December 5th, 2010, or shots from last week you haven't processed until now.

A special welcome to all new members: Join us old hands and post your shots from this week and last week!

Most important note to everyone: Remember, you can post your shots from this week AND last week!

POTW is a great place to show what you're shooting day-to-day with your cameras. It gives us all a chance to see what other members are up to with their Pentax cameras in their parts of the world in which they live or have visited. We can share ideas and hopefully learn from one another which is great too!

So show us what you've seen in your little corner of the planet! Looking forward to seeing all of what's out there this week.

Again same rules as before:

1) No theme, just post your favorite pix.

2) Lets keep it to fewer than 6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.

3) Any Pentax camera or Samsung SLR is fine, whether it's film, P&S, or DSLR.

4) Date: Sunday November 21st to Sunday December 5th 2010. Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes.

5) The current host will appoint the new host as an invitation via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact Peter Zack, Moderator via PM.

Previous hosts: Each one is a hotlink to that POTW thread to look back at the previous POTW's.

It gives me a very Scandinavian/Norse mythology feel. Maybe even Icelandic. Waiting for Bjork to bring the elves....

Great start everyone! Thanks for hosting Tamia. I haven't had much time for photos lately with trying to finish up the last few weeks of school.

Here's a few I grabbed over the weekend:

Archway at the Olympic Oval:

Another take on it:

Perseverence:

This last shot is a bit special. When I shot it, I thought of all the people I have seen over the last month in my last practicum at the hospital...this is my last week. People who are trying to rebuild their lives from the ground up after brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, MS etc. etc.....the list goes on and on.
Whatever the affliction, the perseverance of these people I see daily as they essentially have to start learning to move and think all over again is humbling and inspiring.

Sorry for the repeat if you saw this in the last POTW thread. Tamia advised me I missed the cut off there so thought I would share these here. We put up the Christmas lights this weekend and it gave me an exucuse to play with the K5 on the tripod. I have to say I am not sure if this feature was on the k10 or not but I love it on the K5.

Pentax K-5 - 20second - f/1 - 10-17mm - ISO Speed 80

Pentax K-5 - 5second - f/13 10-17 ISO 80

Pentax K-5 - 30second - f/11 10-17 ISO 80

Couple more from me. Same lake, walking the bank again but by choice this time, and from the pier too...

Pied Billed Grebe

Pelican swimming around. Too far away but I tried anyway, and managed to get a decent shot. Hopefully later I Can get something a lot closer and better. Probably 50 pelicans on the lake, I got a distant shot of a group, trying to decide if it's decent enough to show off or not...at 200 yards, it's tough to get anything even recognizable...this was more like 150 feet.

Tamia - Thanks for the comments, it's a laughing matter now, and everyone was very nice yesterday. I even got in a few shots of some flying cormorants while standing on the pier talking to a man and his wife who were fishing...and a decent shot of an eagle, my first.

One more I almost forgot about, I was in the process of some Flickr uploads and didn't think about this one, but it's one of the last shots of the day...just before dark at another location, shooting with the Lentar 90-230, ducks flying by constantly. The tree line you see is about 200 yards away or more, that's 2 football fields, and the Lentar still managed to get a shot with ducks you can recognize (barely) as ducks...don't know how I managed to get the oil painting look, that is a complete mystery...I'm really liking this lens, I need to use it more...I think I was still shooting f8, but may have dropped it back to 4.5 by this point. ISO 200, no editing other than crop and resize.

Nice image Lisa. Good luck with your last week of practicum. I work with survivors of brain injury and their families in community based social services(SABIS). There are many stories of inspiration (and challenge) in the years and decades post acute rehab too.

Another great night lights shot, Tom. I'm jealous of the lack of noise you get with your camera.

Robin, what an interesting project you're working on. A room filled with large shots of that sort would look fabulous. You've clearly made an impact with many of us here on the forum with your series.

Xjjohnno, I always love your photos of life in Melbourne, especially the wet ones. There's a style and look to your work that I can always ID as yours even before I see your name.

Lisa, good luck with the end of semester work. You've moved from a demanding artistic profession to a demanding and also rewarding one -- kudos. As always, I enjoy your contributions. Your Perseverance photo is quite moving.

Pat, thanks for moving your Christmas decorations photo over to this week's POTW so no one will miss them. They're excellent! I love the star effect around the lights, and also the way you've used reflections. Well done. If you haven't done so, you might want to stop in at the discussion about Christmas Tree Photography in the General Photography section. You could pass on a pointer or two, I'm sure.

Pete, I love pied-bill grebes and their ability to alter their buoyancy to rise and fall in the water like submarines. The reflection of the pel is a nice touch in his photo. They're super flyers despite their huge bills. So, are you going to show us your eagle photo when you process it? The flying ducks "painting" shot is lovely.

Mark, another appealing minimalist photo. Love the geometry and color.

Keep 'em coming, guys!

Hi all. I've been watching for far too long so have decided to join in - will take my mind off all the Greek woes.

Unlike most of you poor folk in the N. Hemisphere, I spend most Winters here in Greece with still good sunny days. This is the seaside town of Oropos. It's a fishing and local Port area also with a nice Marina. Population at this time of year about 3K people which rises to 30K in the Summer. There's lots to see and photograph and I've documented this much in the past.

Anyway, these are 3 shots I took a few days ago. All taken with my GX-20 and DA 16-45mm.

View across Oropos Bay looking North

Fresh fish

Two little birds sitting on a wall

Ooops! will try to get sizes right next time.

Been busy for sometime and finally was able to get out a bit this weekend and added this shot to my collection. Everyone has seen it millions of times but it still feels different when it's my own.
