POTW #147 03-01-11 to 17-01-11
Posted By: Bramela, 01-09-2011, 12:03 PM

I will be hosting this weekes POTW.
Jan 3rd to Jan 17th.

Thanks to woof for hosting last week. It was a very successful week, with a lot of great shots posted.

So I welcome everybody to post up in the coming week. Let us all see, and enjoy the shots you have taken LAST week and THIS week.

Again same rules as before:

1) No theme, just post your favorite pix.

2) Lets keep it to fewer than 6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.

3) Any Pentax camera or Samsung SLR is fine, whether it's film, P&S, or DSLR.

4) Date: 3 January to 9 January 2011. Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes.

5) The current host will appoint the new host as an invitation via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact Peter Zack, Moderator via PM.

Previous hosts: Each one is a hotlink to that POTW thread to look back at the previous POTW's.

Just love all these snow images coming through here. Can't wait for a chance to do some sometime when I am again in the northern hemisphere, though I should add that I usually prefer to go before the snow arrives. Did get some snow when I was in the UK in October 2008, when they had the earliest snow falls in 64 years. Unfortunately, I did not have my K200D then, only my Sony. I got my Pentax the last week I was there, by then the snow had already melted.
Interesting how the weather seems to be dominating the world landscape at the moment, what with heavy snow in the northern hemisphere. and excessive rain in the southern hemisphere. Australia has suffered, so has South Africa, with some 30 people having lost their lives here due to the floods. Mudslides in Asia too.

These wonderful snow pics make me somewhat guilty of posting photos of our lovely weather we have been enjoying. So here are some more from my week.
1. Meerkat in the lounge
2. Cactus pot
3. One pot cannot call the other pot black
4. This one for a certain pentaxian from Monastero Bormida, whom I gather like dogs. This is a dog that simply loves water, loves jumping into it, well more like running and jumping. It owner comes every day to the same place where I do my exercise walk (9km) and then the fun begins for this dog. Usually two or more laps around the lake, with plenty of "fetch the tennis ball in the water" exercises. Have been meaning for months to get some shots of this dog. Yesterday, I finally got some.
5. The dog is somewhere here-I promise.

Cheerio

Noel

From today's SiJ shoot..

The Church Bus

The Church

Directly behind the church

These were all treated with a Highlight Recovery function in Topaz's Adjust plugin. It does leave a little banding where it adjusts the sky but it's still a half decent effect.

See my Flickr for more.

Noelcmn : a nice series of shots Noel. I really enjoy the last two in sequence. Going....going.......gone!

Jeff : Nice shots. I continue to be amazed at all the snow etc being shown. It least it makes for good photos, at least.

Keep them coming. Thanks to all who have posted shots so far.

Really nice images Jeff. The urban images you recently posted to flickr are very striking and the treatment adds to the mood.

I like Topaz Adjust, especially for urban scenes, but I try to use it with a very light touch. It can create some noticeable artifacts.

Bruce and Joe, Thank you. I've been trying out all of the Topaz plug-ins while I can. I applied that particular one as programmed. I liked it on one of my boulevard images and may have gone overboard using it on all of them. It was such a drab day though, I didn't want to Add too much mood to them. What surprised me about it is there was actually some blue sky in a few of them. I like the plug-ins but I'm not sure I'll be wanting to pay for any of them at the end of the month.

Here's a couple more I particularly liked (for those who haven't browsed them in flickr)..

I took two weeks off from photography which, for me, is a long time. These shots are from my first outing of the new year, earlier today in fact. With my (metaphorical) batteries recharged I can once again re-interpret my neighbourhood.

I noticed this orb weaver hanging around in the back yard today. The web was a bit battered, probably from the wind. After a few shots with the sky in the background, I used a stepladder to take some with the house wall in the background. The spider's body was about 3cm long. This was as close as I could get with my DA* 50-135. Hmmm. Do I need a macro lens I wonder? LBA strikes again

Jeff : I really like #2, the derelict green house. That is a fabulous shot.

Fotaki : great series. Lots of character in all those photos.

rparmer : Two very original photos. I personally think #1 is the pick.

Richard : You have the spiders too. At the moment they are everywhere here. You can't walk outside without getting webs on your face etc. Nice shots, mate.

Johnno : Great Melbourne shots. And in good weather too!

Sorry all for being so short in comments. Have two injured and bandaged fingers, typing at the moment is awkward and painful.

Thanks, Bruce. I haven't seen orb weavers for years. It's nice to see them back. The first time I encountered one was after dark. I walked into its web and had it walking all over my face. That was interesting

We finally got a sunny day after several days of rain, sometimes heavy. Brisbane weather. Enough! My water tank is full!

About home reno: learned your lesson?

Richard.

There are scenes like this all over the country, I'm certain but, yes, this is Detroit where the houses are located. See day 13 in my Single in January album (you'll know which one it is).
