P52-3-28 Perspective - Distorted
Posted By: Rense, 02-04-2011, 03:42 PM

And another week around the theme, Perspective! This weeks theme is a bit problematic probably: DISTORTED. For me it includes fish-eye, of course,
but not only that. All photos that show a weird, out of proportion perspective are
included.

Just some backgrounds and some ideas:
I think this article on Wiki is quite to the point: Perspective distortion (photography) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Optical illusions

Time Frame: pictures for week 28 are to be taken and posted between
20110205 and 20110213, so from February 5th 2011 - February 13th, 2011.

Rules:
1. Anyone and everyone who is interested in eligible. The goal continues to be
have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques with fellow
Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a Theme and Sub-concept for you to explore.
3. Post your single picture in Project 52-3 thread for the week. Explain what
motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly
theme.
4. Some post-processing is OK (adjusting white balance, exposure, color
saturation), but let's try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images here. Try to
keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. Since this project is about technique, and not camera, shots taken by nonPentax
cameras are allowed. Cameras can be SLRs, DSLRs, Point & Shoot and Medium Format.
6. There is one “Theme Concept” labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post
black and white, sepia, monotone, etc., for any of the other themes.
7. The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is
active to be eligible for judging.
8. Any picture taken from 20100731 to listed closing date is acceptable for the two
“Seasonal” competitions – Projects 52-3-51 & 52.

Additional Information, including the scheme with subjects: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/mini-challenges-games-photo-stories/10506...-year-3-a.html.

Have fun shooting!

I was thinking how to approach this challenge by looking through my archives. I realized there were many kinds of ways to achieve distorted photos. I hope you don't mind, Rense, but I thought I'd post a few for inspiration. These are NOT entrees.

Bad Turn Distortion caused by long exposure and motion

Church Corner Distortion caused by ultra-wide angle lens

Climbing The Wall Distortion caused by telephoto compression [IQ is terrible -- PAS shot]

Forest Reflected Distortion caused by agitated water modifying reflection

Cows Above

EDIT: Please do not judge this shot, I decided to go wide for the distortion versus telephoto...entered later.

Though not quite as drastic as Tamia's road scene, the rolling hils of this distant pasture just become "stacked" at 200mm due to the compression of the distance between them. I wanted a little bit of something in the foreground, but this tree's branches and the angle I had to shoot from didn't leave any better framing option. Will keep looking for more opportunities, but for now...

I'll go with this one...

Snowstorm Approaches the Mountain Range

See those glaciers? See those passes and sheer cliffs? What a rugged skyline, eh? Well, it's not a mountain range. It's the top of a very high snowbank. The approaching snowstorm is real. This is an example of distorted perspective. Click here to see a different angle, with trees in the background which lend perspective. BTW, those aren't dust specks. They're snowflakes. Archway

K10, Takumar 28mm + Telesar superwide lens converter; f/4, 1/125, ISO200.

Lousy shot Rense. Quite soft on the edges due to the ridiculous lens combo. I was expecting more distortion but it ended like that.
On the other hand, that should keep me on a safe position.

Wide angle perspective distortion

I went downtown this morning unaware that next week's theme is glass and ended up with a number of shots to suit both weeks. Choosing which to enter was harder.

Nice shot Joe!

I had a chance to reshoot this week's theme with my kit lens at 18mm. I liked the composition and subject better than my earlier submission, so here's my entry this week:

The distortion here is not due the lens used but the round reflective surface but it's the only shot I got
