Weekly Challenge #34 - Churches
Posted By: J.Scott, 10-18-2007, 03:31 AM

The truly fun part of winning these weekly challenges is coming up with the next one.

I love to travel. And it seems that where ever I go I see churches. They are obvious representative icons of culture and architecture in the community. I am not a religious man by any means but I am drawn to these structures for more artistic reasons.

I am looking for pictures of churches, temples, cathedrals, synagogues, etc. Be creative; I will accept pictures taken outside, inside or underneath a place of worship. And not just the structure but the people in and around the church or items commonly (or occasionally) found at a church.

The contest starts today Thurs. Oct. 18 and will end on Wed. Oct. 24.

The rules:
1. Post ONE photo (max 800x800) as a response to THIS post.
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme. It can be colour or B&W, your choice.
3. You can offer as much or as little additional information as you wish, but I'd be interested to know the location/event/whatever being depicted.
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and chose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. The challenge runs for 6 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any camera will do, but it will warm the cockles of my heart if it is a Pentax.
8. Obviously the photographer has to be an active member on this forum.
9.You must have fun!

Here is a snap I took on my travels of a typical church in a small Mexican village. ( I love the deep blue sky and the bright red door.)

I'm going to take an entirely different route. In honour of Halloween that's just around the corner here's my take on St Dunstan's in Charlottetown PEI. It is a magnificent gothic church but is so big that without a shift lens and getting on someone's rooftop, you can't get even half in the frame. The spire's are still the tallest structures in the city. I took this with the sun just below the center of the roof to give it a strong backlight. This was shot at 12mm with a little spookiness added.

I love your picture Peter Zack.

I have to miss this one.

There's just no cool churches where I live.

I had my chance last week, while in Alberta, but passed on it.

Come on Stu, if anyone can do it, YOU CAN. Doesn't have to be a church, could be Little Mosque on the prairies - oops, the OK is not on the prairies!

Kidding aside, doesn't have to be a cool church, think outside the box.

Hi all!

Here's my picture:

It's a shot of the cupola on top of the Martha's Vinyard Camp Meeting Association Tabernacle, on Martha's Vinyard, Massachusetts, USA.

Thanks for looking!

Well I couldn't make it out today.

So I've decided to post a picture of My Church.

Take into consideration that my religion doesn't involve going to a building and praying.

It involves going to a place where your at peace with the world.

For me it's out doors, where I can enjoy the beauty that our creator gave us.

Most people here have seen this photo before, but heres Autumn Jewel

Taken at Jewel Lake, British Columbia, Canada

I wasn't going to play this week because I have a lot of church shots w/my wife's point and shoot, but I didn't think I had any w/my K10D (had it a very short time). I found one. I hope this one is a church, in Amsterdam (it has a cross @ the top at least ). Shot handheld using the FA 50mm f/1.4 wide open, 1/5s exposure. I was looking through the Tanzania pics for a mud hut I recalled with glass windows that had crosses on them, but alas either I didn't take the shot or the shots was junk and delete. Anyway....

St Milo's...

here is my entry.. It isn't the best shot.. but it is a beautiful church.. .. It is over 100 years old and made solely of stone. and sits at the base of Meeker Point (13,000 ft above sea level) near Estes Park, Colorado. The church sits at about 9,000ft. The pic doesnt do it justice but I wanted to share...
