Weekly Challenge #160 - Schrooms
Posted By: slowpez, 03-03-2011, 09:04 AM

Weekly challenge #160 "Schrooms"

We all do it - take pictures of the little fungi hiding in the woods. Sometimes we swear we won't ever take another one but, still we do it. They can be so appealing and colorful that they become irresistible. They even pose prettily for us. So dig through those archives and let us see them.

Challenge ends on Saturday March 12th at Midnight EST.

The fine print....
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread, and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera will do or a Samsung DSLR.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.

I like that! Here's one for you Susan: (took this shot a couple of months ago; I like them because they are very small and somehow difficult to spot)

To date I have not been very successful with fungi. This is the shot I like best of my limited selection.

This is in an area along a river that is protected from much sunshine by cliffs and heavy shade, and many springs that keep it damp:

This was taken with an M42 Vivitar 35/1.9

Here is mine. Taken with the K100d and exif data should still be intact. I took this a few months ago.

Susan: Thanks for the interesting theme. I too don't have much in the way of fungal photos, and I distinctly remember some other shots I took, unfortunately I can't seem to find them so I'll go with this one. Taken 4 yrs ago with the venerable DS and the 18-55 kit lens. f/11 and 1/60th. ISO 200

I just thought this little guy was cute. This was taken on the first day hike where my daughter was big enough to actually hike. She still wanted to be carried and pleaded mercilessly. We made a game of distracting her by having her walk along looking for more mushrooms.

Dorky stats: K10D, Tamron 28-75 racked out to 75mm wide open at 2.8, handheld at 1/10 sec ISO 200.

This mushroom was in my Mom's back yard - I enjoyed watching it grow - they grow so fast and get quite large.

If that mushroom is what I think it is, it is very very toxic and can cause fatalities.

Then I guess it follows the rule of so many things in the wild -- the more brightly colored it is, the more venemous or toxic it likely is.

This actually prompted me to do research lol. Ok. So it's not as toxic as I thought - you'd have to eat 20 of them for a lethal dose. Eat one and enjoy some nice hallucinations

JUST KIDDING! Don't eat it!

Took this because it made me hungry for some shrooms. The bigger one was huge, (just the size I like) about 20cm-8inches in size. The product of a heavy rainy season. Believe they are also toxic. So had to go off to the green grocer and get some other edible shrooms.
