Pic of the Week 17 April thru 30 April
Posted By: SpecialK, 04-23-2011, 07:01 PM

Welcome to the 162st edition of the Pentax Forum's Picture of the Week. Thanks to JeremyTheIndian for hosting last week!

This edition covers photos taken between 17 April and 30 April. That lets you show off any shots you took last week but haven't processed until now. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week.

POTW is a great place to show what you've been shooting day-to-day. It gives us all a chance to see what other members are up to with their Pentax (and Samsung) cameras in the parts of the world in which they live or have visited. We can share ideas, learn from one another, and have a good time.

So show us what you've seen in your little corner of the planet! Looking forward to seeing all of what's out there this week. A special welcome to all new members!

Again same rules as always:

1) No theme, just post your favorite pix.

2) Lets keep it to fewer than 6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.

3) Any Pentax camera or Samsung SLR is fine, whether it's film, P&S, or DSLR.

4) Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes.

5) The current host will appoint the new host as an invitation via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact Peter Zack, Moderator via PM.

Previous hosts: Each one is a hotlink to that POTW thread to look back at the previous POTW's.

Ugh a full day at work - no forums breaks!

photolady (1) - yep, that's the flower/crop.

jheu02 - nice field. What are the buildings? They don't look like barns.

photolady (2), emetcalf, photolady (3) - the macro bug is catching :-) Eda, some look a bit soft/mis-focused. What is your setup?

jools - really like that sprouting bud 3. The lighting is excellent.

rparmar - we're waiting patiently... :-)

Thanks for hosting this week, SpecialK! I have been enjoying a few extra days off this weekend. Yesterday we went to have Easter dinner with my folks. Last fall, they moved to what is essentially a cottage in the woods outside a small town and made it through a winter of near record snowfall. They will be turning 77 and 83 this week!

A couple of shots from their property where some snow still lingers:

I think you need to increase your shutter speed. The slightest breeze will move a spider web and spider, thus higher shutter speeds are a must even with Macros. I use a Sigma 70-300mm macro lens most times set on Macro. Shutter speed should equal to either the focal length of the lens or higher. I set mine at 1/500s or better depending on what I'm shooting.

Another suggestion to take that camera off auto mode and use manual for macro.
HTH

Btw, that's a Vanusta Orchard spider you have there. I have one that was accepted in my PPG.

When you shoot manual you have to make adjustments to compensate for the faster shutter speeds like I use.

Perhaps you should get the book "Understanding exposure" by Bryan Peterson.

OK, here are two specially for Easter. I didn't go looking for ducklings, but they found me. It's not as crisp as I'd like it, but the lighting was nice, so here it is.

"eat my wake!"

This is St. Mary's Cathedral, which I walk by on my way home from town.

Nice ones Robin. Love the ducklings.

Here's a few that I took this morning trying to dodge the rain:

SpecialK...thanks for hosting us this week.

Gave myself a 'Spring' theme this week. A mixed bag of flora and stuff taken around a local National Trust park.

Bluebells. Not such a common sight these days unfortunately

Common Thistle leaves

Variety of Lilac blossom - and the delicate aroma !

SpecialK . thanks for hosting.

These are from a walk last Sunday.

Buds and flowers everywhere.

Knospen

This fellow was arriving quite fast, but instead of passing nearby he preferred the bigger detour through the forest:

Begegnung unterwegs

The light in the forest was marvelous:

Wald - Frühling

Wald - Licht und Schatten

Tulips in the garden of a Monastery:

Thanks!

Perhaps inappropriately, we then had duck for Easter dinner.

In my defence I must say that I've perfected the recipe.

It looks like nature is the popular them this week.

jmschrei - it looks like spring has sprung. I have to drive 1-1/2 hours to the nearest accessible snow, when there is any.

emetcalf - I don't like tripods too much but with macro they can really help - if your subject cooperates. With a tripod you can use a longer shutter so you can lower the ISO or get more in focus (if you want) with a smaller aperture.

rparmar = I've been scouring cemeteries lately, so I'm leaning toward that one over the ducks, though they are cute and nicely framed.

photolady - nice colors in the posies.

fotaki - the thistle leaves stand out, though the others are nice as well.

Clou - a nice series in the woods, though the tulips pop with color.
