Weekly challenge #166 - "Alleyways"

Weekly challenge #166 - "Alleyways"

Show me your alleyways. Wikipedia has a definition of the term, first recorded use of the term was from 1788. Often defined to be a narrow pathway between buildings, can be pedestrian only or vehicles as well.

Sadly, the use of big box stores in retail is making these harder to find - so get them while you can.

When i get back home, i'll show you one or two of my own. Sadly, i will be judging and not participating . I'm going to love to see your interpretation of the theme.

The fine print....
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread, and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera will do or a Samsung DSLR.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

Don't know if this fits the theme or not. It's an exterior hallway between buildings in a hotel complex. Yeah or nay?

John, liked your hybrid flower shot by the way - lovely!!

I understand your technical point, but the wikipedia article i referred to shows only open air type passageways, so i'm more nay than yeah. But i won't throw it out.

This was taken on a snowy April day, I like the contrast of old and new.

I'll see if I can find a more "traditional" alley, and I imagine a bowling alley wouldn't count either . It's been raining for the better part of a week, so haven't been out much with the camera.

Yes Sir - the 23rd at Midnight PST, but i won't quibble. I'll look at them the next morning.

Thanks for your interest, I was beginning to think that my little town on the West Coast had the only alleyways in the world Or more likely, one has to be a bit nutty to shoot them.

I've shot mine in BW, HDR, and in color. Funny story about the BW one. I showed it at my photo club, and a lady from Port Angeles said: I recognize that, thats where the large pickup orders were for the Sears Store (no longer there) - thats the Sears alley. A friend won a local juried contest with an alley from the Seattle old town area. Geez guys and gals, find me some alleys please, i promise to be broad-minded. This is a (soft) self-portrait in an alley last night:

Just follow the dumpsters, they'll often lead one to an alley - good hunting!

Joe,
Thank you, thank you, you are clearly in the lead at this point because you are the first with an alley - good work!

Alley Under Southbound Freight

I had to wait for this one. Patience is a virtue! Happily the freights come along about once an hour, though the light was beginning to fade!

Thank you to all who submitted to date - great work.

To motivate those who haven't submitted to date, I humbly provide a poor copy of Henri Cartier Bresson's New York Alley shot in 1947 (my all time favorite image from a master)

I'd shot with the girl on the left, Anna, a few times before. She called me up and said a friend of hers was coming to town and she wanted to do a shoot with the two of them. I guess when they were growing up they were the hellions of their Catholic school (does the "Sinner" tattoo on her chest give it away?). They've settled down since then but she wanted to do something that evoked their old lives, staying out late with god-knows-who doing god-knows-what.

We went down to the seedy side of Seattle's International District (what we called "Chinatown" when I was a kid). This was in one of the gnarliest alleys I've ever been in: filled with scraps from Chinese restaurants and the detritus of an unfortunately large population of heroin addicts and street people, it was not a pleasant place to be on a hot summer's day. But it was a kind of perfect place to be for shooting the two of them.
