Weekly challenge #167 - "Monuments"

Every generation likes to leave their mark and to honour their heroes so man made monuments seem to be all around not to mention mother nature's efforts. Extra points for different takes on well known subjects.

The fine print....
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread, and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners. I'm travelling at the end of next week so I'll close entries 31 May 2011 (British summer time) to give me time to complete the judging before I jet off
7. Any Pentax camera will do or a Samsung DSLR.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

OK, I'll start.

The Washington monument is one of the most famous monuments in the USA, and third tallest. Did not use a polarizer, but the 12-24 has a habit of darkening the sky all by itself...

Another famous US monument, Mount Rushmore, from a few miles away. I shot this from a moving car to get the curvy road in.

The Church on the Blood

This monument, a church, was built on the site of the Romanov massacre in Ekaterinburg, Russia. The Church stands on the place of the brutal murder of the last Russian Tsar Nicholas II, his wife Alexandra, and their children Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia, and Tsarevitch Alexis. They were executed by Bolsheviks at the engineer Ipatiev’s house on the night of July 16, 1918. It's a beautiful building that commemorates an ugly event.

A little over two days to run on this week's contest, looks like I might get off easy with judging.

SOLDIERS' MONUMENT
South Green
383 Main Street, South
Woodbury, CT

Dedicated: September 26, 1871
Type: Granite aedicula and obelisk
Architect: Robert W. Hill
Fabricator and supplier: Plymouth Granite Company
Height: 30'

SOLDIERS' MONUMENT, Woodbury, is significant historically because it is a symbol of the honor and respect paid by the community to its men who died in the Civil War. The Woodbury Soldiers' Monument Association was formed in 1866. A special town meeting was held on October 3, 1870, for the purpose of appropriating town money to build a monument. Moderator of the meeting was William Cothren, author of the 1872 History of Ancient Woodbury. It was proposed to draw the sum of $1,000 from the treasury, to be used with $1,500 already raised by the Association.

The monument reads:

IN MEMORY OF WOODBURY SOLDIERS / WHO DIED IN THE REBELLION OF 1861

(names of 1 first lieutenant, 2 second lieutenants, 4 sergeants, with dates of death ranging from 1863 to 1865)

South:

(8 corporals, 4 privates)

East:

(13 privates, with year of death as early as 1862)

North:

(13 privates)
