POTW Photo Of The Week #169 June 5, 2011 - June 19, 2011
Posted By: jmschrei, 06-12-2011, 02:27 PM

Welcome to edition 169 of the Pentax Forum's Picture of the Week. Thanks to JeffJS for hosting last week!

This edition covers photos from June 5 - June 19, 2011. That lets you show off any shots you took last week but haven't processed until now. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week.

POTW is a great place to show what you've been shooting day-to-day. It gives us all a chance to see what other members are up to with their Pentax (and Samsung) cameras in the parts of the world in which they live or have visited. We can share ideas, learn from one another, and have a good time.

So show us what you've seen in your little corner of the planet! Looking forward to seeing all of what's out there this week. A special welcome to all new members!

Again same rules as always:

1) No theme, just post your favourite pix.

2) Lets keep it to fewer than 6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.

3) Any Pentax camera or Samsung SLR is fine, whether it's film, P&S, or DSLR.

4) Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes.

5) The current host will appoint the new host as an invitation via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact Peter Zack, Moderator via PM.

Wow, you have all been busy. Good work everyone! You will have to forgive me if I can't keep with individual comments for each contributor all week. It is good however, to see newer participants along with the regulars.
I did manage to process a few more shots from yesterday's outing:
Another exercise with the ND grad filter:

Fresh new leaves:

A cool looking root emerging from the ground that caught my eye:

Joe, thanks for hosting this week's POTW, it looks like it's off to a very decent start already.

It's an egret. Maybe a Greater Yellowlegs.
No, a great egret has black legs, and a yellow bill. And a Greater yellowlegs isn't even an egret, it's a shore bird.

Nice shots from everyone. Thanks for hosting, Joe. I'd say you're getting on well with the new ND grad filter. Mar, that lens of yours is going to be a great asset at the shore.

Some shots from my newish Pentax 55-300mm, which I bought primarily to photograph birds:

Young Starling Uncharacteristically not squawking.

Male Red-Breasted Nuthatch Wish I'd gotten the focus on his eyes. They're fast!

Female Yellow Shafter Flicker I was shooting through a wire tomato frame, which makes this one a little distorted, but she's such a spectacular bird.

Excellent shots showing up as usual, and I finally got a chance to drop by and post a little. Glad I did, really like some of these pictures.

Photolady - That looks a lot like a Snowy Egret, but strange. Snowy should have black legs, yellow feet which are not visible in your shot) and a couple of curly feathers sticking up on its tail. Definitely not a great white egret, and not a Little Blue Heron. The Little Blue has a blue beak and grayish blue legs, and if over a year old will have dark grayish blue blotches on places. First year birds are all white.

Here's a shot of one I got just a couple of days ago. This is his second year.

I think yours is a Snowy Egret. I have pictures, but can't post them here, too old...not very good either, it was too far away...

Got a White Ibis the same day, same bird as in your picture. With a Yellow Crowned Night Heron watching as it walked by.

A Red Headed Woodpecker yesterday

And a Red Tailed Hawk from a few days ago. Yes, he went between the wires. Just flew from the pole a few feet to the right.

Finally, a butterfly from yesterday a few minutes before the woodpecker, shot with a Lentar 135mm f2.8 screw mount lens.

All the other shots taken with my trusty Vivitar 200mm M42 screw mount. Best lens I've ever had.

Wonderboom Airshow 2011

Some of my photos taken with a Pentax K-x and 70-300mm DL zoom.

Sorry, the second photo is a mistake. Althoughj it's the same aircraft, it was taken at a different airshow about a month ago.

Pete, Lowell identified it for me. I also posted this in the Samyang club thread and he said it is a immature snowy. He's got a better bird book than I do.

Did I post the spring adult of the Little Blue?

Here's one I got this morning at the city park. Samyang 100-500mm @500mm. Still handheld, didn't have time to get the tripod out.

And this one was taken on the 10th day of this month with my Sigma 70-300mm:

Hi all,

Just a quick one from Hong Kong at night. I am on a business trip and managed to grab a few shots after dinner.

Love this thread! This is my first time posting in a POTW thread. Really enjoying the photos, everyone!

This is my first successful hummingbird photo. It's not great, but at least it's not blurred. (It might be my last since every time he sees the flash now, he takes off before I can get a picture!)

An afternoon rainshower....

This still seems to be a busy place!
xjjohnno - Always good to see the exotic (to me) feathered friends from Down Under!

Tamia - Wonderful to see you back. Love the nuthatch and the flicker. We always have nuthatches nesting in our nesting box and those flickers eat ants -great to have around!

Paelo Pete and Photolady, nice bird shots from both of you too. Seems to be a theme developing. Must be the time of year!

Eric, welcome to POTW with you first post to the Forum. We'll forgive you the out of time frame shot since it clearly fits your theme.

Nomad, wonderful shot from Hong Kong. It seems you are often checking in from interesting locations.

loco, welcome to POTW to you too! Great contributions, the fourth shot is my favourite, a lovely composition.

For myself it has been a stressful few days. I have taken a lot of shots and turfed most of them. I do like this though, a casual portrait of my daughter and her beloved Earl Grey from yesterday.

jmschrei - Thanks, and with me it's not the time of year. I go for birds every time, they are my primary target when I grab a camera. Always have been. I freeze my butt off half the year and roast the other half, looking for bird shots. All the insects, flowers, butterflies and so forth are temporary distractions. Usually when the birds are hiding.

Joe, not the time of the year for me either. I, as Pete said, grab camera and hit the road to hunt for birds. They area always on my mind, I'll see a flicker shoot past my eye sight and think, or wonder what bird that was, and eventually I see them; either high up in the sky (where I see their shadow on the ground) or in a tree among the leaves. I've missed a fair few of them, when the water birds take flight and I'm not watching closely, but they'll be back and I'll be waiting, to capture them for all to enjoy.

Here are a few - shot with the K-X using a screw mount 2x converter modified to an extension tube (glass removed from converter). Shot using a few different Super Tak's, no cropping, all handheld:
