POTW #181 Sept. 11, 2011-Sept 25, 2011
Posted By: lukulele, 09-18-2011, 11:36 AM

Welcome to edition 181 of the Pentax Forum's Picture of the Week. Lukulele will again welcome your photos from around the globe.

This edition covers photos from Sept. 11 to Sept 25, 2011. That lets you show off any shots you took last week but haven't processed until now. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week

POTW is a great place to show what you've been shooting day-to-day. It gives us all a chance to see what other members are up to with their Pentax (and Samsung) cameras in the parts of the world in which they live or have visited. We can share ideas, learn from one another, and have a good time.

So show us what you've seen in your little corner of the planet! Looking forward to seeing all of what's out there this week. A special welcome to all new members!

Again same rules as always:

1) No theme, just post your favourite pix.

2) Lets keep it to fewer than 6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.

3) Any Pentax camera or Samsung SLR is fine, whether it's film, P&S, or DSLR.

4) Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes.

5) The current host will appoint the new host as an invitation via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact Peter Zack, Moderator via PM.

Here are the links to previous POTW threads:

Doubtful, steel, and for the age of the building probably native timbers like oak and ash. No native conifers in this region.

John, great shots of those beautiful birds.
Robin, great catch of the ledge view, it takes me there.
Baro-nite, wow, I've never seen young bluebirds, even the adults are very elusive around here. I'd take those 66% crops.

Behind the stop sign

Baro-nite,
As you know, this jewel is the Mouth of Wilson collection of whatever you need or don't behind the floating stop sign. Lately it's quicker to get from northern Ashe county to eastern Alleghany county using US 58 with the dark, my old eyes and the evening mist.

xjjohnno: now I can see your bird set (don't know why I couldn't earlier). I even recognize one -- the crimson rosella. What a beauty! I hope to get back to Victoria sometime.

Thanks Tom. Note that three of the shots are in my pawpaw tree. It has suffered in the last couple of hot dry summers, hence the dead branches.

Had another chance to get the camera out today, at a "waterfowl impoundment" dam. I guess some of those younger waterfowl have too much time on their, uh, hands:

Everything AND the kitchen sink! (Well, some kind of sink.) I love that shot. Actually it's been a few years since I've been that far west on 58; I'm much more familiar with the Danville -- Meadows of Dan stretch.

Thanks Tom and Baro-nite. After dark, this is one of the eeriest intersections along the NC/Va border. Headlights from oncoming cars are seemingly on delay and every disjointed sound is behind you.

Baronite, my website host might have been doing a bit of maintenance earlier which would explain the AWOL pics earlier. A little fella that's been almost but not quite co-operative enough amongst the birds I've been taking pics of over the last week is the firetail finch. If you ever get back to Victoria do get in touch. That juvenile bluebird is sweet.
Tom, thanks for the compliments on the birds, which reminds me, that 400mm A lens I bought from you is about due out for another outing. It's a great performer but when you see the little birds I try getting pics of it sometimes comes in as a bit short of focal length.

David -- what an interesting set -- what are those blue things?
Thanks for your comment, baro-nite. The blue things are sculptures at the campus of the University of Konstanz. But I don't now what they're supposed to represent. There are some more of those all over the campus.

My office window may be a better vantage point than I had realized. This morning I opened the window and made a blind by draping some camo fabric -- gauzy stuff I can see through OK but that hides me pretty well from the outside. Now I just need a longer lens. Here's a 100% crop of an Eastern Towhee. Guessing it's a young-ish bird most of the way through molting to adult plumage. A little dark on top for a female, but too light for a male; maybe it's a male and still has a fair bit of molting to do.

Wow, this is the first I've been in front of the computer in about 4 days! Busy. Busy. Busy. The sad part is that I haven't been behind the camera either. Maybe I can take a few shots before the week is up.

Some really fine entries again this week.

Great job lukulele! Are you running for perma-host?

Thanks Pentaximus,
I'm trying pass it on as I've got fifty more students this year, two clubs to co-advise, build urinal benches for our first graders (we just occupied a closed high school) and stacks of papers to grade this week. I think this format and our members are the greatest in every sense of the word. The variety and quality of posts is terrific.

Off to one of the national parks today and finally I manage some acceptable pics of a firetail finch.

And some native flowers.
