POTW #183 25 Sep 2011 - 9 Oct 2011
Posted By: lukulele, 10-03-2011, 08:10 PM

Welcome to edition 183 of the Pentax Forum's Picture of the Week. Lukulele welcomes your photos from around the globe!

This edition covers photos from 18 Sep 11 to 2 Oct 2011. That lets you show off any shots you took last week but haven't processed until now. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week

POTW is a great place to show what you've been shooting day-to-day. It gives us all a chance to see what other members are up to with their Pentax (and Samsung) cameras in the parts of the world in which they live or have visited. We can share ideas, learn from one another, and have a good time.

So show us what you've seen in your little corner of the planet! Looking forward to seeing all of what's out there this week. A special welcome to all new members!

Again same rules as always:

1) No theme, just post your favourite pix.

2) Lets keep it to fewer than 6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.

3) Any Pentax camera or Samsung SLR is fine, whether it's film, P&S, or DSLR.

4) Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes.

5) The current host will appoint the new host as an invitation via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact Peter Zack, Moderator via PM.

Here are the links to previous POTW threads:

I haven't been round much lately on Potw either. So I had better get a little more involved.

A couple I took using the DA18-250 on my K5 (with lens creep and all) but a rather good everyday keep on the camera lens.

And a shot that might go well in a spy movie, or perhaps James Bond!!

I'll follow Edward's with yesterday's first appearances on my brother's front porch. Much more to come.

A few more from my wanderings around the harbour/seaside.

Well it's the end of season with empty beaches and.......

....very often empty cafe's and restaurants

Nobody thought to remove this before the concrete went in

This should stop them from wandering off

Ferry to Eretria. A 20 min. sea trip saving about 2 hours on the roundabout route

Rense - Are you kidding??? Those geese look great. If you haven't printed that one and hung it on your wall I'm going to come over there and wash your mind out with soap... I agree with Fotaki, I think it definitely should be on a wall.

Fotaki - thanks for the compliment. Birds are my primary subject. I do a lot of other nature shots out looking for birds, but the in flight shots are my main target and biggest frustration. But I recently found out birds are a walk in the park compared to dragonflies in flight...These were mostly luck, the Eagles happened to be hunting on the same end of the lake as I was, and were good enough to come in close a few times. The last shot amazed me, I was lucky to get anything at all, I happened to see a shadow and turned to look...there he was so I grabbed a quick 5 or 6 shots, the rest were all way out of focus. That one almost was introduced to the delete button, but I was able to lighten it up enough to make it passable. Backlit shots give me fits...

I finally had enough of get ready for winter chores and headed to the mountains yesterday. Ever since I first got my DA 10-17, I have wanted to hike in and photograph this place. It's Avalanche Lake in the High Peaks Wilderness area of the Adirondacks. It was a beautiful day but the bright intense sun did me no favors. A lot of flare but converting to B&W helped the shot. I think a camping trip is in order to catch the morning light in this place.

This place earned it name many years ago when the whole side of Mt Colden went down and created 2 lakes. This is the latest slide, courtesy of Irene.

There once was a lake here. This is above the Marcy Dam, built during the heavy Adirondack logging days of the late 1800's on the Marcy Brook. It's been a popular campsite for hikers for years. Most of the dam, bridge, and the lake is gone forever, more of Irene's legacy. A new slide is visible on Wright Peak also.

Reeftool that first shot is excellent. Personally I'd like it better if the sun was off-center but I guess you couldn't do much about that huh...

Richard, I get the feeling Nessie is coming out of that Loch. Great prompt for a creative writing assignment.

Thanks of the comments. I took a bunch of shots in there. It's a spectacular place. It's 5 miles in over some rough terrain and I can't help the sun. Usually it rains whenever I plan a hike so I never took the sun into consideration. The last time I hiked that trail, around this same time of year, It snowed. It took me longer than I thought to get into the pass. The storm damage has been severe. What used to be a good walking trail is now boulder to boulder hopping and loose rocks and at the end of the day, my knees were really hurting. My plan was to hike down the full length of the pass and take a lot of shots along the way. I only got shots of the upper end. I was 15 years younger the last time I hiked that trail. It was just getting dark by the time I made it back to my truck. It might be a better winter trip after the rocks are buried in snow. Ski in and out and the trip down the lake would be really quick, especially if other parties have broken trail and laid a good track.

reeftool....that's some spectacular scenery and you've managed to get some good shots. #1 in B&W is as good as you could expect judging by the sun angle. Maybe, as Pete suggested, being slightly off-centre would help. Perhaps even a slightly higher elevation (if the sides of the pass are scale-able) would give a more attractive composition. It's well worth exploring further.

It sounds as if the area is slowly being ravaged by erosion/landslides/hurricanes - mother nature at work.
