Big thanks to all who entered the challenge this week. I think "distant" proved to be an interesting adjective to put into pixels. It allowed for some very different and creative interpretations. I was really pleased with the submissions.

In the end there were 29 photos submitted. Many great ones, but somebody's gotta win...so here goes. The entries broke down broadly into three categories: landscape, portrait, and street. I have decided to award a winner in each of these genres and to choose an overall winner from among those three.

Landscape
The bulk of entrants opted for a more concrete interpretation of the theme, so this was a fiercely contested category. I was really impressed with many entries, but this category went to daacon. His landscape was technically, aesthetically, and thematically outstanding. The light and shadow added great drama. And the extreme depth of field--from tiny grasses in the foreground to distant mountain peaks--clearly expressed the theme. The clouds further added to the distant feeling. Great job, Dave!





Street
I practically begged for some street examples of the theme and I was well rewarded. The winner here is Rense. His street shot with the "Anonymous" billboard serving as caption was just great. A classic "picture worth a thousand words" that said oh so much about the distant theme.




***Portrait and Overall Winner***
Tessfully was very engaged with this challenge. She was the first to submit and her first entry--a lovely frozen lake landscape with vertically-striped clouds giving a dramatic distant feeling to the sky--was a serious contender to win. But as the theme grew on her she changed her submission, and I'm glad she did. Her portrait "Nanny & Alzheimer's" is a deeply personal photo that powerfully expresses the theme and is my overall winner. Thank you so much, Tess, for sharing.
