Weekly Challenge #41 - Sunsets
Posted By: Peter Zack, 12-19-2007, 05:59 PM

I wanted to pick a theme that would a) warm me up a little (damn it been cold the past month) and b) also that no matter where you are you can post a picture to this contest. I noticed that this theme has been overlooked (or avoided) as it should be tough to Judge.

I'm going to leave it open for 2 weeks this time as the holidays will be busy for many people.

As a final note. For those that celebrate some form of religious/other holiday at this time, I want to wish everyone all the best to you and your family. Discovering this forum this past year has taught me a lot more than I ever anticipated. So my hat's off to Mo and the entire PF 'family'.

OK the theme. Sunsets
. Doesn't have to be a direct picture of the sun. It could be a reflected bit of light off the snow or beach. Anything that has sunset light will apply. Colour for this theme is most likely best but B&W is fine as well. Below is an example of a sunset with the sun off frame.

Name: Sunset SM .jpg

Everyone takes em, So lets see your best shot!!! ( what have I done to myself....)

The contest will run until Midnight AST (1 AM EST), Wednesday January 2. Good Luck.
Here, as always are the rules....

The rules:
1. Post ONE photo (max 800x800) as a response to THIS post.
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme. It can be colour or B&W, your choice.
3. You can offer as much or as little additional information as you wish, but I'd be interested to know the location/event/whatever being depicted.
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and chose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. The challenge runs for 7 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any camera will do but it must be a Pentax. Just use any camera you want. No discriminating anyone as long as the shooter is an active member here.

Previous Challenge Subjects:
1-Statues, 2-Wheels, 3-Speed, 4-Peace, 5-Survival, 6-Macro, 7-Mountains, 8-Children, 9-Post Processing, 10- Windows & Doors, 11-Sport, 12-Urban Landscape, 13-Wisdom, 14-Power, 15-Music, 16-Pathways, 17-Lines, 18-Storm, 19-Boats, 20-Water, 21 - Golden Hour, 22 - Natural Lighting, Portraits, 23- Motion Blur, 24-Simplicity, 25-Color, 26-Cars, 27-Repetition, 28-Wildlife, 29-Epiphany, 30-Contrast, 31-Pets, 32-Landscapes, 33-Coastal, 34-Churches, 35-Bridges, 36-Creation, 37-Still LIfe: Food, 38-At the Zoo, 39-Wide Aperture, Merry Christmas.

Hi all,

Sorry I've been MIA from the weekly's for way too long.

I took this shot on the _very_ first day I purchased my K100D back in March. I only wish I had been shooting RAW, rather than JPEG in those first 2 weeks. Still, this in-camera jpeg with the kit lens made me happy I purchased a Pentax, and went a long way towards encouraging my photography over this past year.

The watermark is applied automatically when I upload to smugmug into my "pentax forums share folder.' Though I designed it to be reasonably non-intrusive, because of the way this photo is composed, it stands out more than I intended. Hope it doesn't take too much from the shot.

Thanks for lookin'.

-Chris

Peter, this is a great topic.

Mmmmm, anything that has sunset colour to it. I will cast a bit of unorthodox shot here then...

There is sunset colour taken at the magic hour ...

Instead of going through my many sunsets, or hoping for a good one to shoot the next couple weeks, I'll submit this one. This was taken on a special evening out with my husband and youngest son. We went to our favorite Mexican restaurant and then for a walk on the beach. Taken February 17, 2007

Skyless Sunset?

Maybe something just a little different, but I feel portrays the subject in a most obtuse way.

Here's mine - for the fun of it.

BTW, I'm already enjoying the variations on the theme. Good choice Peter.

Along with Peter, may everyone have a Safe and Peace filled holiday and a I-don't-care-unpolitically-correct Merry Christmas.

Sun Set at 25k Ft

Ahhhh the Golden Hour - I am sure I will change my mind a dozen times (this is already nr 2) cause I hope to get some news ones before the 2 weeks are out , but for today I like this one. From the plane at about 25k - 30k feet.

This one should be easy to judge, take the 150 entries, eliminate the 10 that you really don't like and sort the rest. I hope you have some free time in January Peter !

f5.6, ISO 100, 1/80, 18mm Tamron 18-250

This is one of my favorite themes. Just last week I took some of this sunset. I was driving home and go by this small bay on the last road home. Stopped, got the camera out and walked over the snow to the edge and shot. We live not far from Providence RI airport so I waited in one of the shots for the plane to be in the frame

When I post in flickr I seem to lose the exif. So here it is:12/14/2007 Pentax k10d, kit lens 18-35, ISO 1250, 40 mm 1/160 sec mulitsegment focus.

Yes Dave, you got that right. I typed up the contest and when it was finished, just stared at the screen for a good 5 minutes. As soon as I hit the "post" button the immediate thought was I wanna go on a long vacation Jan 1st.

24 hours elapsed, 12 good entries x 14 days = 168 possible submissions. Heck be tough, lets go for a record there's 4500 members.
Here's how I figure it. my choices are:
1) get drunk and evaluate the lot based on a criteria even I won't understand.
2) print all the images, spread them on the kitchen floor, let the Macaw* pick his favourite.
3) Put the names in a hat, pick a winner and then change my user name.
4) declare Jan 2nd April fools day.

* we have a big blue and golden Macaw and if any of you has any type of Parrot you know what he does to paper.
