Weekly Challenge #42 - Action
Posted By: atupdate, 01-04-2008, 04:05 AM

When people think of action shots they generally think of sports. However, action shots are any shot that require good timing by the photographer because the subject is moving. So, with this in mind, show me what "moves" you.

The contest will run until Midnight on Friday January 11. Good Luck.
Here, as always are the rules....

The rules:
1. Post ONE photo (max 800x800) as a response to THIS post.
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme. It can be colour or B&W, your choice.
3. You can offer as much or as little additional information as you wish, but I'd be interested to know the location/event/whatever being depicted.
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and chose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. The challenge runs for 7 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any camera will do but it must be a Pentax. Just use any camera you want. No discriminating anyone as long as the shooter is an active member here.

Previous Challenge Subjects:
1-Statues, 2-Wheels, 3-Speed, 4-Peace, 5-Survival, 6-Macro, 7-Mountains, 8-Children, 9-Post Processing, 10- Windows & Doors, 11-Sport, 12-Urban Landscape, 13-Wisdom, 14-Power, 15-Music, 16-Pathways, 17-Lines, 18-Storm, 19-Boats, 20-Water, 21 - Golden Hour, 22 - Natural Lighting, Portraits, 23- Motion Blur, 24-Simplicity, 25-Color, 26-Cars, 27-Repetition, 28-Wildlife, 29-Epiphany, 30-Contrast, 31-Pets, 32-Landscapes, 33-Coastal, 34-Churches, 35-Bridges, 36-Creation, 37-Still LIfe: Food, 38-At the Zoo, 39-Wide Aperture, 40-Merry Christmas, 41-Sunsets, 42-Action

Good luck to all!

Not really my forte, but I do have one shot that qualifies. Taken late last winter in Washington Square Park where a group of "performance artists" were putting on a show in the empty fountain basin.

Solar Splash 2007

An international, intercollegiate, solar boat engineering competition. This was one of the sprint heats. These boats are electric powered; the batteries are charged using solar panels.

a chance

Finally a challenge I have a chance at! Here's a real nice one I got today at the hockey game. It's a mid-ice collision between the Saints' Van Hoof and the Vipers' Salt. Good, solid, open ice hit with neither player getting hurt. Taken with my Pentax K10D, FA*200mm, ISO 800, SS 1/180, F4, EV +1. Post processed in Adobe PSE: resize, auto colour correction, filter sharpen.

Nice shot Rob. I bet that new lens will be glued to the body for awhile.

I've got so many action shots this was really hard to pick - so here's one of my personal favourites. In the break between innings at a cricket ODI between Aus and NZ (the one where NZ won by 10 wickets )all the attendants spent about 1/2 an hour setting up these ramps for 2 stunt motorcyclists. They took one run one at a time and then tried both at once, then this happened and they stopped - about 2 minutes entertainment at the most, then everything was dismantled.

This was taken at the Fergus (Ontario) Highland Games this past summer. This burly kilted lad grasped his (50 pound) ball with one hand and after a couple of not-so-dainty pirouettes flung it as far as he could! You can see the cloud of chalk hanging in mid air near his head and the chained ball is fighting gravity near the top left of the image.

I plan on returning here next summer with a much longer lens! 200 mm just didn't cut it.

I almost made it last year 2007 - I'm hoping this year 2008...perhaps the twain will meet. Have you been to the one in Sarnia.

You got some real nice stuff being posted...keep it up people.
