# 215 The Daily Grind
Posted By: Arjay Bee, 08-12-2012, 07:37 PM

Welcome to another Weekly Challenge!

Olympics are over so we are all back to the reality of everyday existence and the daily grind of life including watching the regular TV programming and news broadcasts without uplifting sports performances and medal events.

This week's challenge is to depict a banal or humdrum aspect of your daily grind in such a way as we can experience your humdrum and feel uplifted by the circumstances of our own lives. Possibly the depiction will be a reminder for us to see the essential ideal form even amongst the commonplace.

Could be at work, could be at home, could be the commute...

This weekly challenge is particularly suited for those people that say they do not have a 'picturesque' subject in easy reach.

Challenge ends Tuesday August 21st at midnight EST Australia.

Have fun and make my job judging really difficult!

The fine print....
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread. If it's not obvious, explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme.
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge closes after 7 days, then allows for a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax (or Samsung DSLR) camera will do.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, the winner will PM the #2 winner and pass the baton to that person to be the judge.

Previous 12 Challenge Subjects: 203 - Two of a Kind, 204 - Beyond the Beauty Strip, 205 - Color Monochromes, 206 - Electricity, 207-Stop Action, 208-The path of water, 209 - Song Lyrics, 210 - Center It, 211-Abandoned, 212 - Trees, 213 - Fences, 214 - Physical Strain

For example, the kitchen sink...

I had a hard time with this one. There are so many interpretations you can have. I have some shots of 'chores' like the winter shoveling the driveway and the spring yard maintenance however after thinking about them while they certainly represent a 'grind' not so much daily. So as I scoured though my pictures I came accross this one. Whatever my daily grind is , it starts with a cup of Joe.

Work

When I think of the daily grind, I think of work, and the commute to work. So I chose this photo -- this was a hard one to pick -- so many choices.

The Daily Grind! I thought casting off my work boots would signify the grind aspect.

yup- this is the routine for all of us - and it can be made to look interesting unique and special - and most importantly different from the reality that we all live each day. Great start in images posted so far - look forward to more...

Good to hear as this is meant to be a challenge - We all see the scenes and subjects that are photogenic, colourful or highly patterned - it is noticing the special in the commonplace where the challenge lies.

When most of your commuting is done by bicycle, frequent maintenance is a necessary but often grinding chore, such as when...

Push it again

Awesome theme- most of my shots are from what is immediately around me. I work from home and take care of household duties as well so my wife and I can have some time at night to relax (and sometimes I work then, too, but not always!).
Of course that does mean at least 4 trips a week to the grocery store... so, why not a cart? Shot with- get this- an 80-200mm Tamron adaptall 2 103A (these sell for all of 10 bucks). exif isn't accurate for focal length- I think I was around 80mm when I shot this- since the focal length is taken from the setting of SR which I'd set to 200mm since I was shooting around a bit that day.

Great shots by all to date!

Being retired, the only daily grind we have is cooking dinner (which is not actually daily as we do eat out once in awhile )

For me the daily grind means providing transportation for my son to the local skate/BMX park. It has been fun experimenting with composite photos.

As an IT worker my daily grind is sitting behind a PC for 8 hours every day.
