Heavy industry
Posted By: TenZ.NL, 09-05-2012, 10:58 AM

Welcome to another Weekly Challenge!

The challenge this week is Heavy industry.
Since I do mostly natureshots (e.g. wildlife, macro and landscapes), I want to widen my horizon and see your shots of a complete opposite subject: heavy industry. Think of heavy factories, commercial ports, big constuction sites, powerplants, chemical plants... You name it, as long as it is big, impressive and industrial.

New or old, tele or UWA, daytime or nightshot, I like to see them all here
Good luck, have fun and don`t go easy on me!

Kind regards, Jacco

PS:
since I`m on vacation I have no samples to show.

The fine print....
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread. If it's not obvious, explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme.
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge closes after 7 days, then allows for a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax (or Samsung DSLR) camera will do.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, the winner will PM the #2 winner and pass the baton to that person to be the judge.

Challenge will end Thursday September 12th 12midnight US EDT.

Previous 14 Challenge Subjects: 203 - Two of a Kind, 204 - Beyond the Beauty Strip, 205 - Color Monochromes, 206 - Electricity, 207-Stop Action, 208-The path of water, 209 - Song Lyrics, 210 - Center It, 211-Abandoned, 212 - Trees, 213 - Fences, 214 - Physical Strain, 215 - The Daily Grind, 216 - Colors of nature

Abandoned Iron Ore Plant. The sooty colours and dead tree foreground seemed appropriate.

I'll go with this one- posted in another thread.
This is gold mining-except that in this pic, it is the residue gold dust that is being retrieved from the mine dumps scattered all over Johannesburg and environs. Said mine dumps are a real problem when it is windy, as the fine dust gets blown easily, landing on the steps of the houses of a community that lives just to the right of this picture. Here a few of my congregation live, and they have complained that on windy days they can have several inches of the dust-it can be a health risk of course, not to mention the labour of cleaning. But free gold, courtesy of the wind, is not to be shunned. They may get a few ounces after a while, except they would need the new technology being employed to extract the gold. There are water irrigations systems (not seen on this pic) that are regularly spraying water to keep the dust from blowing away- a double benefit I suppose-local community have less to complain about and the company gets to keep the gold.

When Tobacco was King

I'm very impressed by the quality of the entries so far!
This is my contribution. This is part of an old tobacco factory that has been "rehabilitated" (and apparently very successfully). This photo however is an attempt to catch some of the gritty industrial side of this factory as it once was.

I struggled over picking between two photos but chiose this one because it expresses the danger that there can be ion heavy industries. Sometimes there is a high risk, no matter what the safety precautions are.

I don't have a lot in the way of "Heavy Industry" but I do have this shot of a night work train returning to the rail yard in the early AM
