POTW #247 30 Dec 2012 through 13 Jan 2013
Posted By: ramseybuckeye, 01-06-2013, 06:31 AM

Welcome to Picture of the week #246 covering 23 December 2012 through 6 January 2013. Since the last POTW was a short one I'll go ahead and host this full week, if you would like to host next week please send me a PM, otherwise I will be asking you. Last week there was a lot of variety and quality here, let's keep it up! This POTW lets you show off any shots you took last week but haven't processed until now. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week. POTW is a great place to show what you've been shooting day-to-day. We can share ideas, learn from one another, and have a good time. There are just so many splendid photos out there so let's see you post them to this POW 245

Again same rules as always:

1) No theme, just post your favorite pix.
2) Lets keep it to fewer than 6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.
3) Any Pentax camera or Samsung SLR is fine, whether it's film, P&S, or DSLR.
4) Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes.
5) The current host will appoint the new host as an invitation via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact bluestringer, Moderator via PM.

Here are the records of previous POTW threads:

Thanks for hosting again Tom - some spectacular examples on display this week! Arnold, I can feel the sweat in my eyes looking at that shot. We had our own Summer of Hell a couple yrs ago, with 100 days of 100F temps or more

I was hiking in a very desolate area not too far from home, and I thought the scenery (or lack of) lent itself well to monochrome. All taken with a K10D & 18-55 kit lens.

At least the sky offered some color...
I agree. The bw really works well there. Like em // Nick

Thanks for hosting ramseybuckeye. Enjoying the winters scenes above. Here in Australia a nation wide heatwave has fires breaking out all over the country.
This picture taken last week is by a 1959 H2 Pentax with an old Auto Tacumar 55mm f2.0 lens. The film was old expired Fuji 200. The picture is unprocessed as it came from the camera but could do with some help. It was a very hot day if it isn't obvious.
As said before, IMHO theese come out really cool (pun intended) with an ambiance that canīt be reproduced in post processing. I feel moved back in time, fooled to almost beleive it was shot back in -59. Gotta love it. // Nick

Nice of them to put that huge bulls eye up there for your brick test

That's remarkable, and your wife is pretty good at that car window shooting! However 50 is not right, I'm pretty sure there are at least 60 there! I thought you had to go to Alaska to see anything like that. WOW

Nick, thanks for that tour of Stockholm. I like your choice of wide panoramic type shots, I like them. Hope you can post a couple of those night shots here.
Thanks, Tom. Nice you like. For quite a few years now Iīve been out of love with my hometown and with the help of the camera, I am now on a mission trying to "reclaim" my old love for the city. If I fail itīs at least been an good excercise in it self. Being in Dusseldorf, Germany, for a couple of days but will comply and post some night shots when I come home // Nick

The photo has the look of some of the old film and it does look hot and dry. I saw some of the fires on TV and it looks pretty bad. I sure hope you get some relief soon.

The monochrome was a good choice Paul, desolate yes, but I kind of like that dusty lane.

Thanks for hosting again Tom. Lots of beautiful shots already!
Just took a few shots today. Heard a cardinal singing outside, grabbed my camera and saw it sitting up there on the roof. This is with my 35mm lens so it's kind of far away. Shot through the window.
After getting a few shots, I went back and got my old SMC Takumar 200mm and adaptor, in hopes I could get a shot with it. But the cardinal was gone when I returned. Only saw this shy little bird, which usually hide under trees. I just snapped it quickly before he flew away, so wasn't able to get a better shot. Wonder what the name of this bird is.
(I was able to get some shots of bohemian waxwings about a month ago. Never saw them around before. Saw cedar waxwings in the spring. Beautiful birds.)
Great shots of that cardinal! The other bird looks a little like a junco to me, but I couldn't be sure, you might post it in the ID the bird thread in the Birding social group. Everybody there would love to see those waxwings!

The colour of that cardinal is incredible! I'm a bit of a newbie, what does full-crop mean?
I took a few snaps of a '61 Cadillac I came across. Wish I had a chance to get it in front of a decent backdrop!
Shot this one in a nearby paddock before my friends and I were kicked out by a farmer who thought we were stealing his sheep, ha!
Welcome Lachy! That Cadi looks pretty nice where it is, but Paul's dirt road up above would make a cool backdrop for that!

Thanks for the comments paulh, Nick and ramseybuckeye, you all do such good work. There is such an interesting world assortment here from everyone.
Takes me a while to cycle through 40 plus film cameras. This time it is the turn of the KX and M50f1.4

Nicely done still life, Stu...

Here's a couple more from my recent hike. I'm adding the color version of a previously-posted photo for comparison. I have yet to find out what these "birdhouse-shaped" structures are. They are in a fairly remote & little traveled area, with the only access being the hiking/equestrian trail shown in the photo. They are about 18 ft tall - I was thinking maybe some kind of insect traps, or maybe air-pollution monitors of some kind....? K10D & 18-55 kit lens.

Many thanks for hosting again, ramseybuckeye. Great shots this week, plenty snow in some places too. Lachy, I love your shot of the Cadillac right down to the matching furry dice - classic. Here are a few of mine, mostly in the local Botanic Garden on a sunny day where a few flowers are starting to appear even in the winter depths. My K5 and DFA 100mm macro or an smc-A 50mm:

Wow, you actually use all 40?!! Interesting gate since it's not on the gravel lane, that's the kind photo that you sit and look at and wonder.

Well done Stu, I would have guessed it was a box setup with at least two lights.

It's funny but I notice those "birdhouse-shaped" structures more in the color version, I like the picture both ways. Hopefully somebody will know what they are. Not an old landfill is it?

Quite a variety of plants, is that an outdoor garden? I do like the last one, great shot! But I have to say I love the building, I have enjoyed your Oxford photos.

Cold night

Many thanks for hosting this. Attached are a few of my recent trials. I am so excited to introduce myself to Pentax forums through this first post of mine. I am very new to photography. Just made an attempt to take a few shots on a lovely cold night from a nearby park at Edinburgh. Please help me improve by providing your thoughts and comments. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums and to POTW. In case you haven't found it, there is also a thread to have your photos critiqued, but you can find help all over this forum. It does look as though the second photo is a little crooked. That sometime happens with angled shorelines, but it looks like the light reflections tilt a little. I still like that one the best of the three, I think you composed it the best of the three. You could probably improve these a little with a different exposure if you are using a tripod. Keep you ISO at 100, set your camera to AV mode and set the aperture at somewhere from f8 to f16. I don't know your lens' character but you best IQ is most likely between f8 and f11 and the higher number you go you'll get great depth of field meaning more of the photo will be in focus, and at some point your lights may become "stars". Try out all of those f stops and see what you like and learn the characteristics of your lens. You should see a lot sharper photo. If you don't have one get yourself a cheap remote, it will eliminate vibrations. I'm sure you'll get better advice than this which is a good thing on this forum. You'll learn different ways to do things, and you will learn a lot faster here.

Welcome to the forum. I can see you captured the coldness in Edinburg. The photos look fine and can be improved a little in postprocessing. I am not sure if you are using any special program like Lightroom to postprocess, or just the one that came with the camera? For some of the night photos, it is also convenient to use tripod, low ISO, and an aperture between f8 -f16. You can buy some photography book on eBay or Amazon (used) for $5-$8 each. Some of those books will teach you very well how to understand exposure. PM me and I will send you a book. Pepe

Popped across the street to try to double check my adjustment for back-focusing on the the Sigma 30. These are the two keepers that weren't really part of the testing.

Both at f1.4

Any resemblance to my avatar is purely coincidental and does not represent any persons living or dead. I cropped a bit off the top but it looks to be focused in the middle OK :-)

What's that big white glow of light? Oh, just a flare-ball...
