Welcome to Picture of the week #246 covering 23 December 2012 through 6 January 2013. Since the last POTW was a short one I'll go ahead and host this full week, if you would like to host next week please send me a PM, otherwise I will be asking you. Last week there was a lot of variety and quality here, let's keep it up! This POTW lets you show off any shots you took last week but haven't processed until now. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week. POTW is a great place to show what you've been shooting day-to-day. We can share ideas, learn from one another, and have a good time. There are just so many splendid photos out there so let's see you post them to this POW 245

Again same rules as always:

1) No theme, just post your favorite pix.
2) Lets keep it to fewer than 6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.
3) Any Pentax camera or Samsung SLR is fine, whether it's film, P&S, or DSLR.
4) Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes.
5) The current host will appoint the new host as an invitation via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact bluestringer, Moderator via PM.

Dunno what to say..........that has to be like an historic outlook, an exhibition like "cameras of days gone by" in your private boys room. Have you simply bought them over the years as collectors items or..............?// Nick

Nick, my first Retinette was in 1961 (stolen in 1968). Replaced by a Yashica Lynx 5000 with a lovely 1.8 lens. Then a new MX in 1976. It wasn't until I bought the K5 that I remembered the film cameras I couldn't afford earlier. The Retinas, built in Germany, in particular are like jewels. The Minoltas were a chance discovery, as I knew little of them, but I was smitten when I held one with it's 1.4 lens. It wasn't just for the pictures, but for the love of fine machinery I ended up getting various models. This picture was taken by my first simple f3.5 Retinette in 1962 (later stolen). Only four speeds, no light meter and no range finder. You measured distance by eye. Only lighting was natural. It made me realize one does not need a lot of technology to get satisfactory results, just a good lens.

The colour of that cardinal is incredible! I'm a bit of a newbie, what does full-crop mean?

I took a few snaps of a '61 Cadillac I came across. Wish I had a chance to get it in front of a decent backdrop!


Shot this one in a nearby paddock before my friends and I were kicked out by a farmer who thought we were stealing his sheep, ha!

For the Cardinal, in Adobe Lightroom I changed the Camera profile from "Adobe Standard" to "Embedded" and found the red colour much more pleasing (and accurate?). This is the profile my K-5 included with the photo I believe. The "adobe standard" looked more orange.

I think I'm using the right term. Full-crop or 100% crop means I zoomed in to 100% and cut off the rest of the photo off around the cardinal to see what kind of detail I got through the window. Both photos were taken at the same distance, but in the second one, I zoomed in all the way and cropped.

Gotta admit being a bit jealous of the aparent love and knowledge you display here. Hereby renewing my promise to at least bring out and digitalize all the million photos my father took back in the 50´s and 60´s. Thanks for sharing. // Nick

Here's a couple more from my recent hike. I'm adding the color version of a previously-posted photo for comparison. I have yet to find out what these "birdhouse-shaped" structures are. They are in a fairly remote & little traveled area, with the only access being the hiking/equestrian trail shown in the photo. They are about 18 ft tall - I was thinking maybe some kind of insect traps, or maybe air-pollution monitors of some kind....? K10D & 18-55 kit lens.

Those look like bat houses, and I'm guessing you were looking at SL Bat House #1. It's likely part of a conservation study or re-population program. Any idea of what "SL" stands for?

Hmm...that seems like a reasonable explanation! The location is near Southlake, Texas, which could explain the "SL" part of the sign. I'll check that out - thanks for taking a look . (By the way, as a note to newcomers, this is an "old" POTW - please post your photos in the current POTW )
