POTW #248 6 Jan 2013 through 20 Jan 2013
Posted By: Douge, 01-12-2013, 12:29 PM

Welcome to Picture of the week #248 covering 6 Jan 2013 through 20 Jan 2013. I am new to Pentax forums, so please let me know if I made any mistakes in the dates etc. I am relatively new to photography, so I may not have the most insightful commentary. If you would like to host next week please send me a PM, otherwise I will be asking you. Last week we had a lot of beautiful shots, and new members! This POTW lets you show off any shots you took last week but haven't processed until now. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week. POTW is a great place to show what you've been shooting day-to-day. We can share ideas, learn from one another, and have a good time. There are just so many splendid photos out there so let's see you post them to this POW 248.

Again same rules as always:

1) No theme, just post your favorite pix.
2) Lets keep it to fewer than 6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.
3) Any Pentax camera or Samsung SLR is fine, whether it's film, P&S, or DSLR.
4) Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes.
5) The current host will appoint the new host as an invitation via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact bluestringer, Moderator via PM.

Here are the records of previous POTW threads:

Nice series. You got the multitude of colours on the first one and the lack of colours on the last one just right. Perfect. // Nick

Thanks guys for the nice comments to last nights posts

Tonight I again thought it better to go out and shoot something than staying locked up in the hotel room. As noth much around here, it got to be the cross from two nights ago but from anothe angle. Anything for variation Behind me when shooting this I had the actual graveyard and while in the middle of a 90 second exposure I turn to just look around and as I do there´s this massive deer slowly stroling across the cemetary. It made a very gracefull silhouette in the dark and you bet I cursed the misfortune of having the camera in the middle of an exposure and pointing the other way.

Thanks for the kind comments Nick. Enjoying your night shots!
Too bad about the deer. Ah isn't that always the way. At least you didn't turn around to see something else in the graveyard o.o

Very beautiful reflection Greg. And I like how the tree is hanging over the water.

Great shots Mecrox. I particularly like the first one. Nice framing
Is that a rosehip? Very nice looking reds!

I was just going through the photos I took today. I went for a walk with a few other people and we saw a duck sitting on a frozen pond. I was thinking, that's really weird. Never saw a duck sitting like that on a frozen pond, alone. Maybe it's sick? Almost looks frozen in the water. It was a little ways away and I took a shot of it with my 200mm. I kind of glanced at the picture after taking it and though, hmm duck didn't come out that sharp...

I only realized now after viewing it on my computer that it was a decoy haha.

Em, nothing great about the next two pictures (*cough* framing *cough*), but I just like seeing the snow I'll have to try it again when it's snowing.

Some bread I baked just now. It came out well and rated well by some big bread-critics :P
If the lighting was better, I would have liked to stop down a bit more.

The recipe. Much easier than the last loaf I baked. I had a bit of rye flour left over so I used some in mine. And I ended up kneading it (the recipe said "no knead" bread. Seems easier than stirring!

Thank you, Douge. Your bread looks very, very good. Maybe destined for a short marriage to butter. Yes, a rose-hip, on a stand of rugosa roses near here.

Yep, it was disappearing quite fast with a bit of butter

Happy New Year!
I spent about 10 days in Seattle over the holidays. Last weekend the weather was unusually nice for Seattle. Rode on the Seattle "Great Wheel" and took this photo afterwards with my K-5, 15mm ltd and a 9-stop ND. All I had was a table-top tripod, but it was better than nothing...

Nicely done A table-top tripod comes in handy when you are walking around.

Thanks for hosting Douge.
Happy New year to all Pentax Forumites.
Some Fabulous images as usual on this my favourite thread, though I have not been able to participate over the last few weeks, due to ministry constraints, and then I went on Holiday to the Kruger National Park. The reception fro internet access was terrible there, very slow so I could not participate.
The timeframe for this POTW is that week I was in the Kruger Park, so I'll post some images from my time there.
1st up-en route there-this industrial site.

This Heron was confused, thinking it was a duck

This Pied Kingfisher caught in flight, as it hovers above the water. Deliberate slow shutter speed, to catch the wings in a blur.

This beautiful Dragonfly at Lake Panic, one of the best spots in the Kruger Park.

Some duelling Elephants on the road delayed me somewhat. Fortunately they were more interested in their duel than me.

A beautiful Bee Eater

And Lake Panic in a wonderful calm mood allowing some reflection shots. It can often be a violent place, with predators (Kingfishers, herons, Darters, Commorants and Fish Eagles) active at any one time, and then of course there is the constant duelling between Hippo's for dominance.

Not my regular kind of posts today, but our otherwise quiet sleepy neighbourhood has had a bomb scare today and as it happens right outside house. We were woken by armed police at 9 and ordered to stay inside untill the bomb squad had arrived and made an assessment. With the efficiancy of our police force that took 3 hrs, after which we were evacuated for another 5 hrs while they did their thing and eventually blew the thing up. An eventfull day in other words. We have no window facing where the device was planted so couldn´t get shots of anything but the cops on the street in front of the house.

Am I jelous or what! Wife has been to Kruger but I´ve only been to Okavango. I´m sure you got gigabytes of lovely shots like these. Hope you did get the chance to capture Hippo fights. The surge of raw energy in one these clashes would surely power a small town if captured. Thanks for sharing // Nick

Thanks Nick. Make a plan to visit Kruger if you can, and I'm sure your wife will only be too happy to comply. fabulous place, and yes, one or two shots of fighting hippos, though it was mostly play. BUt not at Lake Panic. Gigabytes of shots? Some 2000 plus, not all of them like these. Some are of more mundane things (to us South Africans at any rate) like Impala and kudus. But I also did get to see Africa Wild Dog, lions. leopard, Cheetah, and the smaller Caracal with a kitten.
