POTW #251 27 Jan 2013 through 10 Feb 2013
Posted By: Dr Orloff, 02-03-2013, 03:23 PM

Welcome to Picture of the Week #251 covering 27 Jan 2013 through 10 Feb 2013. Douge has passed the baton to me, this is my first time hosting so I hope I do a decent job. Thanks to Douge for holding fort for so long. The last POTW definitely had an emphasis on cold, but apparently an oversized rat in Pennsylvania has said that's spring's coming so let's see if he's right. I hope his influence extends to France. If you would like to host next week please send me a PM, otherwise I will be asking you. This POTW lets you show off any shots you took last week but haven't processed until now. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week. POTW is a great place to show what you've been shooting day-to-day. We can share ideas, learn from one another, tell stories, and have a good time. There are just so many splendid photos out there so let's see you post them to this POW 251.

Again same rules as always:

1) No theme, just post your favorite pix.
2) Lets keep it to fewer than 6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.
3) Any Pentax camera or Samsung SLR is fine, whether it's film, P&S, or DSLR.
4) Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes.
5) The current host will appoint the new host as an invitation via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact bluestringer, Moderator via PM.

Here are the records of previous POTW threads:

I'll kick off with a couple of shots inspired by the last monthly comp here. Taken with the K55mm f1.8, it's a great lens, everyone should have one. Same subject, different angles:

Thanks for taking on hosting duties Doc. Already a wide range of shots posted here.

The weather has been really nice here lately (above freezing even). Here are some shots from a weekend walk:

Wow wee! Everyone has been busy! So many great pics already!
Those are lovely flowers Adrian.

Beautiful Sunset Tom. I love the different shapes of the clouds in front of the sun.

Is that from the Destroyed dam SpecialK?

I like the different shades of blue and green on the ice Dave

Great action shots Richard. I see that GoPro video camera hehe. So it's cold enough there for all of those cars to be on the lake? Maybe that spot is shallow? Here in southern ontario it's been cold and then very warm, on and off again. Everything keeps melting. I miss driving our ATV on the lake from when we were kids

Nice perspectives Michael. That DA 12-24 handled it well

Yikes that must of been scary Nick :'( Great pictures of that Bridge!
The stem coming up from the flowers do give a look of depth to the shot.

Lol Arnold! (bridge joke )

That is a beautiful whispy plant Joe. Like delicate feathers.

Here's a few I took on my daily walk after the snow. I seem to enjoy taking pictures of that little stream.

The snow here is kind of curling under the roof.

To answer the question, yes, it was cold enough. This was my position. During breaks, I would get into the car and warm up. Even after last weeks rain and couple of warm days, there was 16 inches of ice. Still, I felt safer parking on the sandbar. It gave me a good view of turn 4 although a little further away than I would have liked. It warmed up to a balmy 20F with a pretty good breeze that made it feel colder. My K5 with a Sigma 70-300. That lens is a little soft at 300 but I needed to stay close to the car. I'm hoping to get a couple more races before spring.

A little motion blur on this one. I wasn't paying attention and I was shooting in Av and my shutter speeds got slower later in the day. Some of it may have been me shivering.

Blimey, checked back here and there's been a lot of activity already. Nifty work and all good stuff. Plenty of plaudits above. No need to repeat what's been said but a few that really caught my eye to add my tuppenceworth to.

Ramseybuckeye, wonderful sky and you found good compositions to make the most of it. I really like the first one. How refreshing to see a more traditional and natural semi-silhouetted look, rather than a ton of fill light or hdr.

The Munich underground shots really are top notch. It's difficult to believe that these are f4, there's so much sharp detail throughout. Great set, dififcult to pick one out but I like the emptiness and precision of Obersendling-Ubersicht.

I like those chunks from the dam, there's some good potential there.

And a very nice selection of close, landscape and event snow and ice shots too.

Thanks for hosting Doc. Early morning color mix and a retirement gift from my students.(It rained lightly before the paint dried)

Thanks for hosting Doc. So many great photos this week! I'm a sucker for sunset/sunrise shots, so I esp. enjoyed Tom's 1st barn shot, and lukulele's shot above (congrats on your retirement!)

I took these snaps of a fast-developing storm last week. It looks deadly, but we really didn't get much rain or wind locally. But the system moved east and did create some problems in Alabama & Georgia...

I dabbled in some b/w processing to bump up the drama factor...

Thanks!

The exposure time was up to 1/13th - still no issue with SR switched on.
When using the DA 12-24/4 at 12mm with f/4 the hyperfocal distance is 180cm. As long as you don't need to have things much closer sharp there is no need to stop down. I did not use a tripod, so this was a compromise...

Three more (I actually have a few more taken with the X10, but that would be off-topic here):

Fürstenried West - Abfahrt

Here you can see quite well that a rectilinear lens can have quite nasty distortions on the border thanks to the correction, just look at the rightmost pillar and remember that the cross-section of the pillar is square.

Aidenbachstrasse - Bahnsteig und Spiegel

Congratulations Lukulele on your retirement. Less work means more photography, which can only be a good thing. I like the gift, beats a carriage clock.

That's some sky Paulh.

Nice oof rendering on the toothbrush shot Vanhenry.

Thanks for the info Clou, the 12-24 doesn't have a hyperfocal scale so I never really thought about it before. I would have just assumed that f4 wouldn't be enough so it's a really useful snippet. The lens performs well wide open too, I only really use it stopped down for landscapes.

Thanks for the encouragement Dr Orloff. We really enjoyed the Q photos of your menagerie, especially the bacon eater. I ended up ordering a second Q last night for myself.

Many thanks for hosting, Dr Orloff. Not much going on here this week by way of gorgeous sunsets or crystals of ice (darn, as these are lovely shots on here). Only had a chance to get out once or twice. K5 + DA 70mm:

Great pictures everyone!
Just wanted to mention, I love this website: Found Film If anyone recognizes the people/locations, let them know
I have one of those old brownie hawkeye cameras.. I vaguely remember seeing old undeveloped film as a child...

Supposed to be quite a snow storm heading this way.

Here is one of the photos I took for the "P52-5-9 Composition/Perspective — Low Angle Shot". Just have to figure out which one I want to use.
