POTW #255 24 Feb 2013 through 10 Mar 2013
Posted By: nosliwmit, 03-03-2013, 06:28 AM

Welcome to Picture of the Week #255 covering 24 Feb 2013 through 10 Mar 2013. Thanks to nosliwmit and all of last week's participants for their stellar work. If you would like to host next week please send me a PM, otherwise I will be asking you. This POTW lets you show off any shots you took last week but haven't processed until now. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week. POTW is a great place to show what you've been shooting day-to-day. We can share ideas, learn from one another, tell stories, and have a good time. There are just so many splendid photos out there so let's see them here at POTW 255.

I haven’t taken any photos since last Sunday, so here’s the last photo I took (or at least the last one I kept) on 3/3. This is an old church in an area of Panama City called Casco Viejo (or Casco Antiguo), which is the second heart of the old colonial city (after the first colonial city, now known as Panama Viejo, was sacked by Welsh privateer/pirate Henry Morgan in 1671).

Again same rules as always:

1) No theme, just post your favorite pix.
2) Lets keep it to fewer than 6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.
3) Any Pentax camera or Samsung SLR is fine, whether it's film, P&S, or DSLR.
4) Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes.
5) The current host will appoint the new host as an invitation via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact bluestringer, Moderator via PM.

Here are the records of previous POTW threads:

Thanks for hosting nosliwmit and for sharing that beautiful photo to start the thread.

Yesterday I went to Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area. It was supposed to be partly sunny and dry. I think there were two minutes of sunshine and it snowed most of the time. So most of the photos are long range with a "snow filter".
I'm not around the water all that much, so Northern Pintails are a new one fro me:

Nosliwmit, thanks for hosting a second week. There were some fantastic images in last weeks POTW, but I was too late, so I'll post some here. Hope you don't mind, but these are from WPD, 23rd Feb, and some from 24th, which falls within the time frame of this POTW. Already some great shots, especially that opening salvo there nosliwmit.

Johannesburg has a small section of a double deck highway, probably about two hundred meters or so. Tried to capture that in the early morning.

Here's two shots of Johannesburg, one from the south and one from the east

A barn somewhere North East of Johannesburg

Cooling Towers- I knew the son of the guy that designed these towers.

Thanks for hosting this week's POTW, nosliwmit!
Already a lot of great images! I especially like Tom's image of the hawk and Noel's image of the cooling towers. Really great work, guys!

Last night I went with to a nature reserve near Konstanz. There was no moon so it was very dark and thus composing quite difficult. Basically I had to crank up the ISO and take test shots in order to save time. Couldn't even go down to ISO 100 for the final shots...

Looks like we're off to a roaring start again!

I'm particularly envious of Tom's owl shot (having seen so few of them), Andy's halo shot (good thing you had your camera with you Andy!), Noel's cooling towers and David's water-reflection shot. Great water shots also from Lou and Dave. Right now there are huge flocks of waterfowl in Panama City so I really need to get out there and add some more water and fowl to this thread before the week's out. Lovely cars, Kyle--I love the red Batman-looking thing (and is that a blue T-bird in the background of your first shot?) and the grille-work on the bonnet of your 2nd photo.

Keep 'em coming!

Thank Douge, I saw that article too, reads like the guy is almost a professional time bird watcher.

Thanks, I spent last Winter studying on owls because I had not seen one since I got a camera., made a few trips to the owl wintering area at Killdeer Plains, and came up totally empty except for an owl that someone tipped me on last January. Then in May I saw an Owlet in a nest at Magee Marsh, very far off though. Then we went to the Ohio State Fair last August and there were 3 injured owls on display, I only had my 10-24 zoom along but still got some good photos. This winter I went to Killdeer Plains to the owl wintering area have seen Saw Whet owls a couple of times, I think a Barred Owl which I thought was a Saw Whet until I seen one up close and saw how small they are. And then I saw a Great Horned flying through a woods, and I'm pretty sure I saw another owl flying Saturday morning. So keep it up, it will happen for you if you're persistent.

I like train images too, especially yours Stephen, we don't have steam engines here, so it's great to see them.

Why it's the Southern Crescent in England, Stephen! Same paint, striping, and font and just as spectacular. Hope you can get to North Carolina and see the NC Transportation Museum before our politicians try to close it. The Southern Railway's (US) maintenance shops halfway between Washington, DC and Atlanta, GA in Spencer, NC. Stephen, because of those train shots I ordered the Sigma 50-150. Howard Fogg would be envious of your billowing clouds.

The Batman-thing is actually called a Streamline, though the museum does have the Batmobile and Batbike in the Hollywood Star Car section. That is indeed a Thunderbird in the background, though this was Corvette weekend - a special exhibit. All 5 of the 1940 BMW's Kamm coupes were hidden and subsequently lost in Germany. This is an exact replica.

what a gorgeous selection of images this week!

thanks for hosting again nosliwmit!

love the birds, ramsbuckeye, and i really loved the low light shots David!

That power station one looks super cool too, noelmcn.

Life around our place is pretty boring. It's wolfiepup, wolfiepup, wolfiepup. My subject matter doesn't seem to change.

This was taken yesterday morning.
