P52-5-15 Winner - Perspective - Nifty Fifty
Posted By: russell2pi, 04-04-2013, 06:40 AM

Sorry for the delay in judging! I am away on work at the present so I'm afraid I will have to be brief.

Some interesting contributions for sure to this competition.

From the title, I took it that perspective (field of view) was expected to play an important role in the composition of the image. A number of lovely images don't seem to depend much on perspective effects - so in choosing a winner I have focussed on the others.

tessfully - gorgeous image, as usual from you ! I love the way the subject stands out due to sharpness, despite sharing tone and colour with the background leaves, and the suggestion of echoed shapes in the background.

jools - nice - full of character - the bright colours suit the man's disposition!

kain - I really like this one... hard to explain why and this is a completely subjective opinion but here's what I like. The cosy warm colour palette. The square aspect (although, sorry, I wish it was perfectly centred) and circular symmetry, broken by assorted seemingly radiating shapes (for the control of which subject distance / FOV / focal length is key). The gradation of tone on the shade... the reflections ... the blown bulbs... the question of who made this contraption and why.

Tamia - I can't see your pic?

jmschrei - yep, lots of interesting repeating shapes in that design and the perspective effect blends interestingly with the curvature of the bridge. (Do all Canadian pedestrian bridges have travellators on them ??)

maria27 - I agree, really pleasing bokeh which works really well with that background - patterns hue and tone.

ramseybuckeye - oddly enough what my eye keeps coming back to is the line of shingles (?) poking up above the ridgeline from the opposite fall of the roof. Potential there ?

And the winner is ... kain - nice one !

Congratulations Kain, I agree, lovely tones and perspective too. And begs the question-who made this contraption?

Hi noel -- no, I can't! Strange - what is going on??

Uh oh - maybe I'd better suspend the judging on this one?

I also have an apparently empty post by Tsukiouji . Is that meant to have a pic too? If I get a chance later I will try viewing it through a web 2 email service. I am using a hotel internet connection although I can't fathom how or why they would be filtering in such a way.

Please accept my apologies for the cock-up

Congrats Kain! Very unusual object you have there and very nice colors, shot from an unusual point of view. Thanks for judging, Russell!

As for my picture, Noel's, and Tsukiouji's, if you accessed the site through an https address rather than an http one, that can prevent pictures hosted on external sites from being displayed. Try clicking through on these addresses:

Thanks Tamia! Got 'em all now. Odd - surely must be then a problem with my computer setup, not the connection as I had assumed.

Once again, please accept my apologies!

Tamia - lovely shot - a few striking and attractive elements skilfully combined for a pleasing result

noelcmn - pow ! certainly got my attention

tsoukiouji - yes, a nice, interesting image, thoughtfully composed

Reconsidering all submissions afresh, I am still happy to say the winner is Kain. Well done, Kain.

No problem Russel, glad you could get to see the other images, and still you are right with Kain's image. Kain, you are the judge for the next Project 52 Challenge, which I beleive is triangles. Best of luck everyone.

Many thanks to Russell for judging and commenting under the computer duress. Stuff happens and gremlins creep in, man.
Congrats to Kain for the top selection. Captivating image.
Kudos to all for some great pix for this challenge.

Thank you all! I wasn't sure if I wanted the light on center or off either, but I decided to stick with where my hands took it.

I look forward to seeing better triangles than mine for next week.

Wow, that was quite unexpected. Thank you for clarification, Tamia.

You're welcome! I had a similar experience happen to me some time ago, and Adam explained how to work around it. I'm not sure of the technical reasons why it happens, but if you're looking at the site through a secure link (the https as opposed to the http address), some photos won't load.

I figured out a quick fix... go into the address bar and delete the 's' in https://... press enter, and voila. I'm not sure how I came to be in https mode in the first place. All the links in the email alerts are http, and I wouldn't key in https manually. I use EFF's HTTPS Everywhere plugin but it doesn't seem to work with this site anyway (thankfully). Ah well.
