POTW #262 14 Apr 2013 through 28 Apr 2013
Posted By: ruggiex, 04-21-2013, 06:55 AM

Welcome to Picture of the Week #262 covering 14 Apr 2013 through 28 Apr 2013.

Thanks to Davidw0815 for taking on the hosting duties last week. If you would like to host next week please send me a PM, otherwise I will be asking you. POTW is a great spot to show off any shots you took last week but haven't processed until now. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week. POTW is a great place to show what you've been shooting day-to-day. We can share ideas, learn from one another, tell stories, and have a good time. There are just so many splendid photos out there so let's see them here at POTW 262!

Again same rules as always:

1) No theme, just post your favorite pix.
2) Lets keep it to fewer than 6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.
3) Any Pentax camera or Samsung SLR is fine, whether it's film, P&S, or DSLR.
4) Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes.
5) The current host will appoint the new host as an invitation via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact bluestringer, Moderator via PM.

Here are the records of previous POTW threads:

wolfiegirl - love the expression in the 3rd picture despite it being a bit OOF. Does K-01 have zoom'd focus assistance? I find that to be much easier to use than focus peaking when using a Q.
Douge - very interesting looking radio. I love the colors for the pin up too. Bright, brilliant colors grabs my attention. I feel the image could use a little texture for the background but that may be just me.
lukulele - yikes snake. A couple times I almost got too close to them during my hikes because I was focusing too much on looking for a scene to photograph instead of the road.
ramseybuckeye - great capture of wild life as usual. That photo of the squirrel is definitely a keeper!
dave - cool variations of colors over there. compared to here, it's either green for 2-3 months in the spring or just brown the rest of the time. there's almost nothing in between - very dull.
nosliwmit - great close up capture of those critters with the 35mm. for me, they usually fly/jump/run away - serious lack of skills

Just processed this image... The vertical light beams is a light sculpture designed by artist Leo Villareal. It will shine from dusk until 2:00 a.m. on the San Francisco Bay Bridge West Span from March 5, 2013 through 2015. In real life, the lights animate in all kinds of patterns. Sometimes, it looks like rain. Sometimes, it looks like clouds flying across. You can watch live stream of it here: View | The Bay Lights

Great shot Andy! I was watching the video, very cool! (minus the music hehe) I liked one part where it looked like a sound wave traveling along the bridge.

How about some grainyness for the background? :P Just need her to hold an old Pepsi bottle.
(Strangely, the background has a bit of a tint to it on my external monitor, but on my laptop monitor it just looks grey.)
First time for me shooting in a studio. Was a lot of fun. I was the only person with a Pentax. I'll have to post some more.

zoomed focus assistance? is that the same thing that douge was suggesting? i haven't had a chance to reshoot yet but will play around and see. half the problem is getting her to stay still while i sort out the focus. =/

yeah, you're telling me.. i've tried using tv mode, but still get mixed results ah well, practice makes perfect... just another excuse to keep on taking photos.

i was complaining to wolfieboy that i didn't have enough photos of her when she was first born (was going through the photos the other day) and he laughed at me and said, since he was the third of a family of boys, he only had 2 photos taken of him throughout his entire babyhood...

I'm enjoying the show and the conversation this week. Here's all I have to offer at the moment...

Stopped roadside and got this as a storm developed recently.

And a couple of variations on Dogwood flowers, first in black and white, then in color. Two different trees at two different times.

That's all, folks!

Lovely dogwoods, pentaximus

i don't think she's too impressed about being rugged up for her walk...

and a few more from this afternoon. couldn't find the zoom thingy (i've seen it before but i can't for the life of me find it now), but lucked out on a few shots.

Many thanks for hosting again, ruggiex. Babes, bambini, birds, butterflies and flowers among the many great shots this week! Here are a few of mine, all taken at a folk festival in the town here over the weekend - mostly Morris Dancing in various costumes. All with my K5 and an old smc manual 120mm f2.8 lens, still amazingly good if you can nail the focus OK. I am delighted with it.

pentaximus - beautiful shots as usual!
wolfiegirl - at least she seems to be having fun posing for you... asking my fiance to pose for me so I can get better with portraiture requires a lot of convincing, otherwise, it lasts for 10 minutes!
mecrox - that first shot with sun reflections from the glasses is just perfect. I envy people who can use manual lenses quickly. I only have a 50mm f1.7 and I usually get frustrated with the result.

She loves looking at me at the moment, and I think the click click click of the camera keeps her interested. Between that and the fact that I can make noises with my tongue (she seems to love the sound of my tongue hitting the roof of my mouth) makes for smiles - IF I can manage to get the focus and the shot in time.

It's never too early to train them to love the camera, is it?

I think for adult portraiture it tends to make the subject self conscious? I know that I'd love to have more photos of me but posing with someone behind the camera isn't always comfortable.

I agree with you ruggiex, I love the starburst on mecrox's first shot. Super cool! I can hear the 'ting!'

As to using manual lenses.... CIF is a beautiful thing. Despite focus peaking, I find I still prefer being able to just spin the focus ring holding the shutter down until the camera goes 'oh right... in focus now. proceed!' of course there's good and bad, but overall, it's worth it.

Since Pentaximus let the beautiful Pink Dogwoods out, here's some singing Pansies from Disney's "Alice in Wonderland." Creepy, eh?

WOW, what a collection we have this week already. Agree with the sentiments about Mecrox first photo. Stunning colour Mecrox, You would enjoy the colorful Minstrels of Cape Town, should you ever come to Sunny South Africa-http://www.capetown-minstrels.co.za/. Click on gallery for some pics. or Google Cape Town Minstrels.
Wolfiegirl-Stop it! She's too cute. You may think that first one is not too bad- I think its Fab.
Nosliwmit-lovely selection of macro's. Tried catching some ants like that once-suffice it toss say- they (the photos and the ants) joined the ranks of "the ones that got away".
Tom as usual, a lovely collection from you.

Thanks Ruggiex, for hosting again this week. I like your opening salvo. I'm joining Tom with some birdies, taken in my back garden. Not much of a chance to do some clicking this week, so confined to the back yard, or the road, or space.
Common Sparrows.

While shooting the sparrows,I noticed the moon

And made a point of shooting it again at night.

This from the other day- Moon flare

Their is a pair of Black Shouldered Kites that are appearing regularly, hunting just across the road from where I live, hunting alongside the railway line. It does hover from time to time, and I am hoping I shall have the skill and the timing to catch one of them hovering, as it searches for rats and mice here. For the moment I have to content with catching them on the railway line- a bit far too.

Have a great week everyone.

Great expressions in the sets by wolfiegirl and mecrox!
lukulele--I see bird heads in your flowers. Really, I do.
And why can't I see Noel's photos? Is it a problem on my end?

I see you now, Noel. Great shots! I always like how the moon looks from your POV!

I'm liking the photos guys!
Here are some from the past little while. All taken with my DA 55-300mm at around 200mm.
This Chickadee has moved into the spruce tree in the front. It doesn't even fly away when I walk by. I see it digging in the middle of this tree for seeds. But I saw my cat climbing this little tree trying to catch it.

The day after it snowed, I saw some garter snakes coming out in the sun I followed this one for a while. It eventually went down a hole by a tree stump. I don't remember seeing any snakes in the the city here before. I haven't seen many snakes at all for years. So I'm really glad to see some. (I had a tough time getting a shot with the snakes tongue sticking out.)

I only managed to get one shot of this little bird through the window. I had AF on and it got confused, wasting some time. I wonder what kind it is.

wolfiegirl - this is the zoom feature for assist that was mentioned earlier https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-k-30/223000-mf-assist-x2-x4-k-30-a..._source=feedly Maybe K-01 operates the same way?
lukulele - agreed, you can get some really creepy shots at the correct angle and shade...
noelcmn and Douge - great wild life shots!
