POTW #268 - May 26 through June 9 2013
Posted By: filoxophy, 06-02-2013, 10:33 AM

Welcome to another round of Picture of the Week. This is edition #268 covering May 26 through June 9 2013.

POTW is a great spot to show off any shots you take in the upcoming week, or last week that you haven't processed until now. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week.

Same rules:

1) No theme, just post your favorite pix.
2) 5 or less images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big.
3) Any Pentax or Samsung camera, film or digital.

The current host will invite a new host via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact bluestringer, Moderator via PM.

Here are the records of previous POTW threads:

Hey people, my name's Erick and this is my first time hosting POTW. First shot is veggie kabobs awaiting the grill on Memorial Day (May 27th). [K-7 + DA L 18-55mm] The second shot is from this morning as my wife and I were wandering through a nearby neighborhood-wide yard sale. [K-7 + A28/2.8] Wish I could have taken some more time with that building--I think there is more to be had there. Glad I got the plastic sheeting blowing in the wind though! I'll have to go back when my arms aren't full of yard sale junk. Well, not all junk...found a Ricoh KR5 Super with 50/2, 28/2, and 70-210/3.9 lenses for $35 total!

So there's my initial contribution. What have you all been photographing recently?

Thanks for hosting filoxophy. Great batch of photos to start off with! Here's a few from my favorite local hike/bike path.
One of many bridges I cross nearly every day -

This honeysuckle is still wet from the previous night's rain:

We've had a cooler & wetter than normal Spring (up til now), so everything is lush & green. This is a view of a small stream from one of the aforementioned bridges:

Thanks for sitting in the driver's seat, filoxophy! Some really fine shots already. Great work everyone!

I don't know why I never got around to posting these last week, but since Memorial Day is still in play here are a few shots from our local observance. I've always appreciated the solemnity of this service, which includes publicly reading all the names of our county's war dead. A very moving reminder.

And how about some film? Here's some nicely aged (expired) Kodak "UltraMax" 800 run through the ZX-5. I don't have a full-frame telephoto, so my DAL 55-300 was called into duty. Processed and scanned by Walgreens.

And here's a digital shot from the close of the above camp. My boys with Georgia Tech and Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jonathan Dwyer.

Thanks!

@smf: I personally love the car pictures. Shape and texture studies are one of my favorite styles of photography, and one that I would like to improve in. Since you invited C&C, the only thing I see that I would change if I could (IMHO) would be to extend the DOF on the second car shot so that the tip of the chrome trim piece was in sharper focus. Maybe that wouldn't have been practical or possible given the actual circumstances, but anyway, I still really like the image.

@Paleo Pete: Quite a tail on that Flycatcher! Would love to see what it looks like in flight and in person.

@mtux: My favorite is the monkey on the railing with the people in the background. Shows an animal in an unusual (to my urban American eyes) setting.

@dave kitson: Great shot! Looks like a challenging lighting situation from what I can tell. Turned out really well. Wish I had stuff of that quality from my own wedding!

@Alkazalsir: Nice birds there. Recently saw a scarlet Tanager around here, but was unequipped to capture it. Beautiful bird, though.

@paulh: My brother lives in DFW, though I have yet to visit him there...your images help me imagine more what that area is like.

Great photos everyone! I'll be heading up to Erie, PA in a couple days, so I hope to get some quality shooting in while I'm up there.

Filoxophy, thanks very much for your comment and suggestion on my automotive postings.
The hood ornament/rust photo was at 1/320, f/5.6, ISO 400. Thus I could have done as you suggested, and your suggestion should help me when I'm shooting hood ornaments.
All best,
Stu

Thanks for hosting filoxphy.

Not a whole lot to contribute this week since most of the stuff I did were portraiture photos, which I'm really bad at right now. So I'll just leave with this one I took with Q + 01 while taking a walk around my office.

Thanks for hosting filoxophy! You're doing a great job hosting!

@ noelcmn - I was wondering abt that kookaburra beak! For a while there I thought you'd captured it eating a worm or something.
Also LOVE that glass building shot! I wonder how often they have to clean those windows!

We've been down with the flu so it's been a hellish and very quiet week, photo wise. She is finally on the mend, and will go in today for her 6 month needles. Not looking forward to it.

Here's a few taken over the last few days and edited last night

Here's little wolfie pup chewing on a toy. She's been putting everything in her mouth and gnawing at the moment. Her teeth haven't popped up yet but the doctor says give it a few weeks...

And here she is gnawing on her unicorn's horn.

I love the look of concentration on her face, and just realised it's probably a touch too blue. It's hard to tell at night with just the side lamps on.

Here's another that is a touch off, colourwise, despite working on the colour balance. But knowing how much/little time I have these days, I know if I don't share it now, who knows when I'll get around to doing it. And the look on her face is too precious not to share.

Actually, now that I take another look, there's quite a lot of noise too. Hrmm.. looks like this shot needs a lot more work than I realised. Ah well.

And we should always end on a smiling note...

Thanks for your kind comments Wolfiegirl. And was wondering what happened with my dose of the madam cutie pie. So sorry to hear about the flu-its hit us here is SA too. In any event, I'm glad to hear and see you all on the mend. Good grief, she is getting cuter by the day Wolfiegirl. And the teeth can't be far off judging by the drool. Precious memories Wolfiegirl-cherish them! My son, now 18, is visiting from the States, for 6 weeks, and looking at your photos of wolfiepup-well, I remember all those stages of my son-teething, crawling, and crumbs, before you know it, he 18, starting to date, and reckons i'm an old man! And gotta say this "poor unicorn!
BTW, the windows get cleaned weekly.

Thanks for your lovely comments noel Yes, I wasn't too impressed at the time. Talk about bad timing. I came down with the cold just in time for my birthday so all celebrations had to be postponed. wolfieboy had organised a babysitter for wolfiepup and i was looking forward to going out at night (!) for dinner. ah well. she will be all the better for having had a cold. good for her immune system.

she had her 6 month shots yesterday and slept like a dream - my first decent night's sleep in over a month. feel like i can take on the world atm.

haha re unicorn. Better the unicorn than her other toys which have hard plastic on them. when she gets tired and chews on them she gets quite cranky. at least the unicorn horn has a bit of give.

That's a gorgeous rendition Stephen! It looks exactly like a beautiful watercolour! You should join us and play in the PP thread, which is on every week.

I am going to express my opinion here, on more than the image itself. This is a really beautiful and artistic picture. It also shows how much the idea of a photograph has changed. To my perception, this is no longer a photograph so much as the creation of an image (beautiful) that is far different from what the eye originally saw. There should be a distinction drawn between heavily processed images and out-of-camera pictures because they are like apples and oranges. I know that Ansell Adams did post-work on his pictures, but correcting contrast and lighting to make the picture more like the real thing, is not like making the picture into something quite unlike the original.
Manufactured images like yours are quite stunning, but I am beginning to yearn for a thread that shows only pictures straight the camera (maybe allow small adjustments for exposure and contrast only). Not that this is asked of you, but as a question in general; there are threads dedicated to post processing, so why not one which show what one can do unassisted?

I generally do just show "straight" images here, but, just for this week, I felt like pushing the boat out a bit! Also not had a huge amount of time to shoot this week, so I have spent a little more time on the computer than normal. I shoot in RAW, so all images get a modicum of processing, generally just a little contrast adjustment and a crop to 7:5 or 5:7 ratio ( or square in this case) Someone else suggested posting into a PP oriented thread, so might try that!
