POTW #268 - May 26 through June 9 2013
Posted By: filoxophy, 06-02-2013, 10:33 AM

Welcome to another round of Picture of the Week. This is edition #268 covering May 26 through June 9 2013.

POTW is a great spot to show off any shots you take in the upcoming week, or last week that you haven't processed until now. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week.

Same rules:

1) No theme, just post your favorite pix.
2) 5 or less images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big.
3) Any Pentax or Samsung camera, film or digital.

The current host will invite a new host via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact bluestringer, Moderator via PM.

Here are the records of previous POTW threads:

Hey people, my name's Erick and this is my first time hosting POTW. First shot is veggie kabobs awaiting the grill on Memorial Day (May 27th). [K-7 + DA L 18-55mm] The second shot is from this morning as my wife and I were wandering through a nearby neighborhood-wide yard sale. [K-7 + A28/2.8] Wish I could have taken some more time with that building--I think there is more to be had there. Glad I got the plastic sheeting blowing in the wind though! I'll have to go back when my arms aren't full of yard sale junk. Well, not all junk...found a Ricoh KR5 Super with 50/2, 28/2, and 70-210/3.9 lenses for $35 total!

So there's my initial contribution. What have you all been photographing recently?

Had a great day today. Picked up a lens that's been on my LBA lust list for a long, long time

Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5.

I spotted one on the marketplace the other day, but it's slightly out of my budget (because I am a complete cheapskate ). So on a whim, I checked out some local classifieds and was lucky enough to find another. He had it reduced to $130, and according to the listing he'd been trying to sell it since February. I don't know how I missed it the last few times I looked, but hey there we go. You can imagine my surprise and glee when I contacted him, to find out that it was still available (!!!!!) I couldn't tee up that meet fast enough.

Upon meeting him I decided to ask (just in case) to see if he might be negotiable on price. I pulled out the wolfiepup card (she was in the car, although her car seat was covered as she was fast asleep), and explained that I'd be able to use it on the weekend to document group shots etc, and he agreed.

So for a total of $100 the sigma 17-70 is now mine, mine, MINE! I don't know if you can tell, but I'm *very* excited. I'm really hoping the AF on this will be a lot faster than my 28-70 which I've had mixed feelings about (sometimes it doesn't seem as sharp as it should be, and quite slow on the AF). It's also perfect timing, as we will be going up to Sydney on Saturday for the long weekend. I'm looking forward to putting it through its paces. If it's as good as they say it is you could argue that I could clear out most of my lens collection as a result.

What makes it all even better is that I got some birthday money, which covered the lens. So really, the lens cost me nothing.

So far, have only managed a few test shots with the K-01. Initial impression is that it seems pretty sharp. Here is the little one in her jungle gym. The brown monkey (with the red ring) plays music when you pull it down. wofliepup tends to pull it down to gnaw on the plastic. This shot was taken in fairly low light. Just the side lamp on the left and the kitchen light to the right, around the corner.

I am going to express my opinion here, on more than the image itself. This is a really beautiful and artistic picture. It also shows how much the idea of a photograph has changed. To my perception, this is no longer a photograph so much as the creation of an image (beautiful) that is far different from what the eye originally saw. There should be a distinction drawn between heavily processed images and out-of-camera pictures because they are like apples and oranges. I know that Ansell Adams did post-work on his pictures, but correcting contrast and lighting to make the picture more like the real thing, is not like making the picture into something quite unlike the original.
Manufactured images like yours are quite stunning, but I am beginning to yearn for a thread that shows only pictures straight the camera (maybe allow small adjustments for exposure and contrast only). Not that this is asked of you, but as a question in general; there are threads dedicated to post processing, so why not one which show what one can do unassisted?
Such a thread exists. Here it is. "NO Post Processing!"

Having said that, POTW is really an "anything goes" place. The restriction is the time frame. It is a great place to share experiments and get opinions. Personally I agree with much of arnold's thinking here ("There should be a distinction drawn between heavily processed images and out-of-camera pictures..."), but all of my black and whites are "heavily processed" since I shoot in RAW. So maybe I'm conflicted.

I like Stephen's shot because it is a very tastefully executed example of "heavy" processing. He had a vision, played with it, and produced a lovely image. It's more than a "cool, look what I can do in this software" thing. I wish all post-processing exhibited Stephen's care.

So, Stephen, thanks for the image.

Arnold, thanks for the opinion.

Ain't POTW great?

@wolfiegirl man I picked up DA* because I think I'm going to need the WR when I travel later this year. At that price, I think I wouldn't be able to resist even for a duplicate! And wolfiepup is so much cuter when she's happy.

@wolfiegirl: great catch on that 17-70. That's one I've been keeping an eye on as a kit lens replacement (someday!). Cute pic too!

Thanks ruggiex and paul. Yes, she's a heartbreaker when she smiles.

I've been toying with the idea of a WR but honestly, I don't shoot enough to justify it. I upgraded from a sigma 18-50 to a Pentax 18-50. I managed to sell the sigma, but I have no idea where the Pentax went... Yeah... I *obviously* needed that lens....

My wish list is slowly dwindling now. There's some lenses I'd like to have but they're not essential by any means. i.e. the price would have to be *really* really good before I'd consider purchasing. Because I pretty much have the entire spectrum covered. Except for a fisheye or a bigma-esque/mirror lens. But I've yet to see one go for anything within my budget.

Many thanks for hosting filoxophy. Looks like summer is in full swing for a lot of folks: the sun is out, the barbies are out, so too are the birds, the brides, the babes and all manner of other things. Here are a few of mine:

Sorry for being MIA for the past few days...first my computer went down (of course it's the main one with Lightroom, etc), then I was out of town for two nights.

Went up to Lake Erie planning to do a bike ride out a peninsula called Presque Isle and take all kinds of photos. What happened instead was that it rained ALL DAY, mostly heavily, and was very windy. We stubbornly drove out the Isle, but biking was out of the question. Hard to tell from the photo, but it was driving rain at the moment. This was basically a grab shot of my wife, taken one-handed while I held an umbrella. Cropped almost in half, too. And basically unprocessed since my PC is still on the fritz. So for sharpness, etc etc it's nothing to get excited about, but it makes for a nice memory!

If anyone would like to host next week, shoot me a PM! Otherwise you may be stuck with me again next week.

Quite agree, I like it too. But a bit of sharpening will enhance it I'm sure.

Bad luck, sounds like a case of "English weather" with a turbo-charger. Still a nice shot, though - that's a very stylish umbrella!

Well folks, here's a couple for the road. Mecrox is taking over hosting duties for next week's POTW. It's been a pleasure. Maybe I'll be back sometime.
