POTW #268 - May 26 through June 9 2013
Posted By: filoxophy, 06-02-2013, 10:33 AM

Welcome to another round of Picture of the Week. This is edition #268 covering May 26 through June 9 2013.

POTW is a great spot to show off any shots you take in the upcoming week, or last week that you haven't processed until now. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week.

Same rules:

1) No theme, just post your favorite pix.
2) 5 or less images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big.
3) Any Pentax or Samsung camera, film or digital.

The current host will invite a new host via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact bluestringer, Moderator via PM.

Here are the records of previous POTW threads:

Hey people, my name's Erick and this is my first time hosting POTW. First shot is veggie kabobs awaiting the grill on Memorial Day (May 27th). [K-7 + DA L 18-55mm] The second shot is from this morning as my wife and I were wandering through a nearby neighborhood-wide yard sale. [K-7 + A28/2.8] Wish I could have taken some more time with that building--I think there is more to be had there. Glad I got the plastic sheeting blowing in the wind though! I'll have to go back when my arms aren't full of yard sale junk. Well, not all junk...found a Ricoh KR5 Super with 50/2, 28/2, and 70-210/3.9 lenses for $35 total!

So there's my initial contribution. What have you all been photographing recently?

Thanks Filoxophy, for hosting this weeks POTW. And congratulations on your first hosting duties. Its fun, and a learning experience, not to mention the benefits from seeing some of the techniques here.
Here's a contribution from, me, the first 3 are from my visit to the Johannesburg Zoo. Sorry, just out of the date range, but hope you don't mind, just have not had enough time to process them from last week. Still have not actually, and have only done these 3. Been a hectic week after one weekend off.
This Kookaburra had a problem with its beak.

And a Kori Bustard, a bird I regularly see in the Kruger National Park, but never this close, so I took the opportunity for a portrait.

A beautiful specimen of an Orangutan

And will continue with the theme from me from last week- some modern buildings in Johannesburg.
Here's a front view of that block of apartments.

And another angle on that glass building.

And found this fellow lounging in the sun-solid as a rock.

Have a great week everyone. Hopefully I'll get a chance for some pics this week.

Shot underneath the Tonto Natural Bridge outside Pine, Arizona. A beautiful hike, and a surprising sight to behold.

Friends of Steve McQueen car show...
Motorcycle used in The Great Escape, actually jumped by McQ friend and stuntman Bud Eakins.

BMW "art car".

Owned and raced by McQ.

Exact replica of Porsche 917 1970 LeMans winner.

Taking a break.

Thanks for hosting filoxophy. A very nice start with some really good images so far.
Saturday we went to a soccer game, this is with the DA18-135WR from the opposite end and cropped quite a bit:

It started to rain late in the game, my wife ran for cover with the masses, I had the K-30 & DA18-135WR.

I drove out to a place to check on an Eastern Phoebe's next to se if the eggs had hatched yet, they had not, but this eastern bluebird flew up and landed on the roof of the little shelter where the nest is.

On the way back I saw this guy mowing hay on his old tractor:

Great start, everybody--quite a range of styles and subjects so far!

@Papa Lazarou--Nice moment there of a couple of beautiful children.
@noelcmn--Love the head shot of the bustard. Funny how what's commonplace for one person is "exotic" to another!
@StephenHampshire--That train shot is awesome! Lively diagonals, good light, interesting subject.
@tkj365--Looks like you find a peaceful spot there. It's been too long since I've spent time in the American Southwest. Beautiful, sere country it is.
@SpecialK--That Steve McQueen bike is my dream. For now I'll have to settle with my scooter, haha. Some beautiful machines there.
@ramseybuckeye--The penalty shot picture is great. You caught the right moment for drama there. That bluebird is beautiful--I'm in a similar part of the country, but it doesn't look familiar to me. Probably just need to keep my eyes open, is all! An Eastern Phoebe is building a nest right above my parents' front door. They've taken to using the side door to give it some space.

Keep 'em coming!

Thanks for hosting Filoxophy,
Kyle, this one's for you. I drove from the Naval Air Station at Brunswick, GA to Daytona in a 1961 VW to watch the real deal at the 1971 Daytona 24 Hour practice in the days before passes and security. The 12 cylinder at full song is unforgettable. Just digitized in tif to put into LR4 to clean the debris from the original Kodachrome. Also, the evening chief of security at our local alignment garage.

Filoxophy, thanks for hosting. A couple from me with the Pentax Q. One little house to phone from about the bigger house. Note the sign by the earthquake authorities, forbidding entry.

Thanks for filoxophy for hosting and for starting the thread with such high-quality images. Thanks for everyone who has posted.
Here are two of the many images I captured at the Michigan Antique & Collectible Festivals (which will also be offered July 20-21 and Sept. 21-22, again in Midland) and two more poppy photos. The automotive hood photo was significantly tweaked in Nik's Color Efex Pro 4. Comments and criticism are welcome — by personal message or e-mail if you prefer either to commenting in this thread.

Thanks for hosting Filoxophy

Hawk on a wire from a couple of days ago. Haven't looked up which hawk yet...oops...

Scissor Tailed Flycatcher. Starting to see these pretty regular around here, so their range may be extending a bit. I've never seen them here at all until about 2 years ago. I'm seeing at least one pair, and have seen both at the same time several times, and have seen another pair several miles away at least twice. So we have some nesting ones here, maybe they'll be getting more numerous...very interesting birds, they catch insects in mid air and in the process they perform some of the most amazing aerial acrobatics I've ever seen.

Thanks for hosting Filoxophy,
This week started with animals, and here I continue it with some of them

Yesterday I went to a nearby park in Kuala Lumpur, and found several monkeys playing around, since I had just my nifty fifty with me, I had to get close to monkeys to shoot them better
here are a couple of results:

and the last one, several monkey in one shot

It's quite common here to see monkeys playing near people and getting fruits, breads and even biscuits from them.
And I admit it was a little bit hard to have them in focus with manual focus

That nifty fifty is an amazing lens, and here demonstrated in the hands of expert. Great shots. Risky business here in South Africa to feed baboons and monkeys, they become very aggressive, once the dependency upon humans has entrenched itself.
