#246 The thin slice
Posted By: jmschrei, 06-04-2013, 10:35 PM

Much to my surprise, I have the honour of hosting the next weekly challenge. I am curious to see what you can do with shallow DoF This is a technique I am not always comfortable with myself (especially super thin DoF) but I love it when it works.

Any and all interpretations are welcome. I hope to see some creative interpretations of shallow DoF.
Good luck, let's have fun and look forward to your entries.

The Challenge will close on Wednesday, June 12, 11:59 PM, MDT.

The fine print....
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread. If it's not obvious, explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme.
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge closes after 7 days, then allows for a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax (or Samsung DSLR) camera will do.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, the winner will PM the #2 winner and pass the baton to that person to be the judge.

Unclear if macros are fair game. If not, I will make a change since I have another in the oven.
Taken with a K200D, Sears 50mm f1.4 wide open, and a 12mm extension tube.

As usual, there are no strict rules - the theme is open to interpretation. I can already see that choosing a winner will be a challenge! Still lots of time to make it even more difficult for me.

Was out in my in-laws garden and took out my rarely used K135 f/2.5. They have a high stone wall (3 to 4 meters high) leading from one garden to the next and I spotted a little flower to practice focusing on at f/2.5, this is one of the shots.

That is at f1.2
Should be as thin as possible formy gear!

I like how the "icy" colors support that glass turntable!

I very rarely shoot wide open, but did just checking this lens out a few days ago. This shot was taken wide open at f1.4 with a SMC Pentax 50mm f1.4 that has the 52mm filter ring instead of the usual 49mm one, so it's apparently a very early version of the 50mm from what I've been able to find out. It's also the only 50mm I have that has a bit of fungus, I cleaned most of it out, but still can see a little on one of the rear elements. It's not as sharp at 1.4 as it is at f8, but not too bad either. That's the main reason I never shoot wide open with any lens...but I had to try it out a time or two...just to see what this lens will do. At f8 it can match my favorite A series 50mm I think...

I got a few other wide open shots, this was the best one of the bunch. K30 was the camera used.

This one has been posted before but thought it might fit the theme. Very noisy and that affected the sharpness but I have always liked the way it came out. Although after seeing the entries so far I am not sure why I am bothering. Good job so far everyone.

I did this specifically for this challenge, the black and white seemed natural.

Another 17 hours before this challenge closes so there is room for more entries just to make the task of judging even more difficult.

It wasn't easy, but a winner has been selected and is posted here.
