Winner - #253 Fog or Mist
Posted By: slowpez, 08-13-2013, 07:57 AM

This was so hard; so many wonderful images. You all should be proud of your abilities as I have always found the subject to be a difficult one but you have managed to prove me wrong. Without further ado - here goes:

Bramela – that foggy coastline with waves crashing against the breakwall and the bit of red on the bouy are just beautiful. Lots of detail in this one from the sandy spit to the rocky breakwall.
Clou – I want to stand where you did and just look at that magical mountain. The subtlety of it peeking through the fog is intriguing and holds the viewers interest.
Sealonsf – truly lost in the clouds and fog in this one. Those golden colors add to the magic.
Atupdate – you have managed to capture the magic of the Smoky Mountains with its layers of subtle color and, of course, the smoky appearance. Well done.
Fotogaffer – another magical mystical mountain that creates both mystery and drama.
Lukulele – this one makes me feel I am soaring above the world. The blanket of clouds and the blue colors make this serene and surreal.
Scratchpaddy – maybe Arizona is lacking in fog but you did find a lovely patch at your mom’s place. Not only are the foggy mountains beautiful in the light but you managed to capture some lovely reflections too.
Jheu02 – the title gave me a chuckle but it suits the subject perfectly. That Buick left a large spot behind after the aliens finished with it. Well done.
SpecialK – great shot of a wonderful subject. The golden gate has never looked better than when captured surrounded by fog. Good job.
Tamia – the stark relief of the tree against the foggy background and the yellow of the frontloader (?) make this one a standout for me. I wonder if the workers will come back or if they have disappeared into the mist never to be seen again.
Jools – the road looks both forbidding and cold. Not sure I would want to go any further down it.
StephenHampshire – I love everything about this from the lighting to the subtle colors of the fog. The sharp focus on the tracks leading to the train is the stuff magic is made of.
Paleo Pete – what can I say about this one? It is just perfect. Mystical and magical and makes me wish I had taken it.
Neville – a road to nowhere or to some place where strange and wonderful things happen. I like the purplish sepia of this one.
Charliezap – you are a master of those in-camera effects. The rain and its effect on the background lights is really nice.
NaClH2O – you have really captured the serenity of this scene and the reflections and the two ducks really add to the image. Good one.
Casil – wonderful foggy day and the texture of the tree and the foreground rocks makes this one.
Arjay – another gorgeous tree. The leading lines from a tractor take you right into the mysterious world beyond.
Daacon – I’ve been to that lake before and this one takes me back there. I love the rocky shore in the foreground and the hints of what lay beyond found in the fog.
Checking…jono – what a wonderful image. I love that there is a single boat showing sharply against the foggy background with the treetops and bouy peaking above the carpet of fog.
Johan Holmgren – the subject matter here could have been spooky or eerie but instead it left me feeling warm and comfortable. The two men seem to be friends having a conversation about mundane things on the way home. I want to walk along with them into the dark which they have rendered safe. Nicely done.
Ramseybuckeye – I love the light coming through the mist created by the water sprinklers. Well seen and captured..
Noelcmn – you captured one of the dangers of driving. I love the autumnal colors in the foreground and the overpass looks like it cuts off the known from the unknown.
RollsUp – I love the warm colors of this one and the sea birds add another dimension to an already other-worldly image.

Honorable Mention to: Tamia, NaClH2O and RollsUp. Well done guys.

3rd Place: Johan Holmgren. I still find myself wanting to join these two men on their walk.

2nd Place: StephenHampshire. This was so close for me. I wanted to have two first place winners. A wonderful image.

1st Place: Paleo Pete. I fell in love with this from the moment I saw it.

Wow thanks a lot. And congrats to the runners up and honorable mentions too. I know this was a really tough one to judge, I saw a bunch of great shots every time I looked. I'm not sure if my favorite was Staphen Hampshire's train in the fog shot or NAClH20 with the ducks on the lake. All excellent shots though, every one of them.

Now I have to come up with an idea for the next one...

OMG! I am so happy and honoured that you like my picture. I agree fully with the first and second place, absolutely gorgeous pictures. For third place I think most of the entries could be picked :-).

The winners better be hanging on the photographer's walls, as they are all exceptional. Very fun challenge to view but I'm glad I didn't have to judge. Great challenge and thanks for hosting Susan.

WOW Congratulations to the winners and well done Susan. The entries in this challenge had to be some of the best ever. I'm glad it was you Susan, that had to pick between Stephen's and Billy's photos, both are just remarkable and Johan's not far off.

Sorry for the delay, been off line for a while. I'd have chosen that heron shot as my winner too--just so ethereal! Thanks for all the kind comments on my shot, I spent a long time in post getting just the right effect and it is pretty close to how I remember the moment!
