# 258 The Moon as an Element
Posted By: ramseybuckeye, 09-16-2013, 07:42 PM

Thanks to Mike L for hosting last week's "Car" challenge and welcome to this week's weekly challenge - The Moon as an Element;

Your picture should have the/a moon in it, or be related some way, but not just a picture of the moon. I chose this category because it's something I like to do and there just happens to be a full moon this week. But your photo does not have to be from this week. By the way challenge number 169 back in June 2011 was the moon theme. Be creative and shoot for the moon!

This challenge will run from today September 16 through Monday September 23 midnight GMT.

Rules are as follows:

1. Post one photo (max 1024 X 1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3.Post your single photo in this thread. If it's not obvious, explain what motivated you to submit the photo and how you feel it represents the weekly theme.
4.The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5.The judge will pick the winner, who will then host and judge the next week's challenge.
6.The challenge closes after seven days. This allows a day for the judge to pick the winners.
7. Any Pentax (or Samsung) DSLR is acceptable.
8. Photos can be from any time frame, not just the week of the current challenge.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge of the next week's challenge, the winner will PM the #2 winner and pass on the baton to that person to host and judge the next week's challenge.

Let me be the first to kick off in this week's challenge.

I took this shot from the Durban beachfront one night in October last year, and it reminded me of the poem "The Highwayman"...

The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas.

This is not a challenge entry

I do not have one legitimate moon image in my files. I do have this image where I added the moon in post processing. It is an ICBM missile on display at the Air Force museum in Dayton, OH.

Great topic and +1 sample photos Tom. Nice entries too for so early in the comp. Tim, I never would have known that was an added moon (well, maybe I would have wondered how the heck you got that shot). Great idea!

Here is my entry from a canoe trip to White Trout Lake, Algonquin Park, Ontario.

The start of my love affair with Pentax

I have many pictures with the moon showing but this is one of my favorites because of the story behind it that started in 2006.In 2006 I got my first Pentax DSLR (Ist DS) and on a sparkling day in March I was trying to "shoot the moon" using my Quantaray 55-300mm lens. I noticed that the sky was busy that day with many planes with contrails that were flying the North to South route and thought maybe one will fly close to the moon in the frame.I got lucky and got the one that I use for my Forum avatar at present. That's half the story.Parade magazine which at the time was a Sunday supplement to the major National newspapers hosted a weekly photo contest.I sent in the moonshot and several months later I was notified that it was Picture of the Week along with a $100 prize.I've enjoyed being a Pentaxian ever since. Congrats on the publication...

Did they print it backward or did you???

I suspect they did...I hate it when they do that. My sister has 2 of my macro shots framed in 4x6 for her travel trailer, one is hung vertically instead of the original horizontal. She said she likes it that way and left it...it irritates me every time I look at it but don't tell her that...lol

They cropped it and presented it that way but I didn't care as I was tickled pink just to win.--charliezap

I'm sort of surprised I chose this one which is rather simplistic, but those are 2 of the 6 famous astronomers on the monument at Griffith observatory.

OK, I'll play. I don't have a lot of shot with the moon in them, but of those I do have this is one of my favs. Taken last Sept for the "single in __ " challenge. The lens I was using that month was the venerable pentax K 135 F/2.5. It was difficult getting a framing with the moon and sunset but without any electrical lines. Ended up in the middle of a fairly well traveled street during rush hour and stopped traffic while I took the shot, fortunately people in my 'hood are fairly understanding!

We were in Western Australia (the other side of the country) on a 6 week holiday and went to a place called Cervantes which was named after a ship that wrecked near there.

At Cervantes there are a myriad of limestone formations called The Pinnacles http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pinnacles_Desert.

It's a great place to visit at sundown for the light and shadows. The moon appeared in just the right spot for this image.

This is not fit to win anything, certainly not in this company! But it's one of very few pictures I have featuring the moon. The scenery is from Sesriem, Namibia just after sunset. The Namib desert and Namib Rand have some of the most beautiful landscapes I have seen
