POTW #282- 2 September-06 October 2013
Posted By: noelcmn, 09-29-2013, 01:22 PM

Welcome to another round of Picture of the Week. This is edition #282 covering 12 September through 6 October 2013.

Many thanks to Noelcmn who hosted last week’s POTW thread.

POTW is a great spot to show off any shots you take in the upcoming week, or last week that you haven't processed until now. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week.

Same rules:

1) No theme, just post your favorite pix.
2) 5 or less images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big.
3) Any Pentax or Samsung camera, film or digital.

The current host will invite a new host via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact bluestringer, Moderator via PM.

Here are the records of previous POTW threads:

Hi everyone,

We had a bumper edition of POTW last week, a visual feast for those of us who like cyber travel. Here's my appeal to make this one equally good and even better.

And SpecialK is off the mark already, with some fabulous shots. Being a Mazda owner (and have been one for many years) I must say I like that Mazda-never seen one of those before and probably never will in this 3rd world country. TFS SpecialK.

Here's some from my visit to Rietvlei Nature Reserve.

I'll post some more later.
And while I am here, I am looking for a host for next weeks POTW please! And like a good teacher, let me add this "Don't get me to send you a PM". Avoid it at all costs

Happy Monday all.

I went to a place called Cerro la Vieja (in Panama) this past weekend. It's up in the hills west of Panama City and is very green and beautiful. Lots of birds there, so it was a good chance to give my DA* 300mm a workout. Saturday and Sunday mornings I sat with a cup of coffee and my tripod and watched the birds visit a bush that had been "seeded" with ripe bananas. Here are a few of the photos that turned out well enough to share.

The dragonfly (or is it a damsel?) was about 4 inches long. The red bird is a tanager of some sort (maybe crimson-backed?). Red-legged honeycreeper (non-breeding male?) and blue-headed parrots (from a distance and very cropped, unfortunately).

Here's some to follow Dave's images from Austria from our trip. Red Bull Dolomiten Man, Lienz, Austria. My sister has lived up the valley from Lienz since the seventies.

I'm itching to do some landscape but there's no colour in the leaves yet, so in the meantime. A pair of parasol mushrooms, very tasty they were too:

I bought my wife some orchids (yeah right):

They are telling us on the news that America has decided to close. Should be a good week for photography then as there won't be much else to do.

Noel, thanks for hosting again, that's a cool damselfly shot, here's a couple for ya

50mm f1.7 and extension tubes, I think one 25mm tube.

Just the 50mm, small mushroom the morning after a much needed rain.

A couple of hours later the mushroom was gone, those don't last long. If I make it outside after about 10Am they're already gone.

And a few water birds on the lake with a Makinon 135mm. Roseate Spoonbill, Snowy Egret, Glossy Ibis and some ducks in the background...and my 200mm is dead...boy does that suck...Also I'm not positive those are Glossy Ibis, could also be immature White Ibis but I think Glossy...got a couple of shots of an immature Blue Heron but don't seem to have them handy...

And the super duper stuff keep rolling in here. From sports to macro's, landscapes and the twitchers are not left out either.
Nosliwmit- I am so envious of that Damsel fly-the detail on the wing is amazing.
Stephen-Love those two lines in the 2nd pic- draws the eyes to the majestic trees.
Dave-your turn to receive "i'm not talking to you!". Can almost feel I am right there in the Alps with that first one.
Lukulele- you also get "I'm not talking to you!". Love the angst caught on that paddle skier (that's what we call them when they are used on the beach) or kayak. Bringing back some fond memories-that last image. I was in Switzerland and saw a lot of those paragliders while as there-a place called Interlaken.
Stuart, as usual some wonderful stuff from you. Like that first one-Beautiful colors.
Dr Orloff-You also get "I'm not talking to you!"-that is for mentioning that those Mushroom are very tasty. That simply not fair. First you capture them beautifully, and then you eat them. My favorite food-Mushrooms (which also tells you that Farmer Maggot (talk about a bad choice of a name) in the Lord of the Rings is my champion). Now do attend to that itch.
You get nothing from me PP , except praise and commendation. That mushroom is lovey too. I'm trying to get myself a set of extension tubes, but they are out of stock at the moment. You got me itching to visit a bird sanctuary again with that last shot.

OK, now that I am not talking to most of you I'll punish you with a few shots I got over the weekend- Summer is here
Here's some urban surfing.

And this Silky Cotton Tree seed.

From Rietvlei Nature Reserve
A Zebra portrait-slightly different, as I tried to get th contours of its body in as well. Looks like two Zebras, but it is only one.

Rhino- Its horn has been cut off, to protect it from poachers. As can be seen here, its growing back very nicely.

Glad to have caught this Sponbill in flight.

Have never seen an Ostrich drinking water, so was especially glad for this sight.

Ok, lets have some more contributions.

You have wildlife like that on your doorstep, I'd swap that for a couple of mushrooms.

Unseasonably warm here so wildflowers still abound. This is dark mullein (verbascum nigrum), a member of the figwort family. I like wildflowers, easily overlooked, but I much prefer them now to the garden varieties. I think I shall undertake a large wildflower photographic project next season with an aim to a photobook. The stem would normally be straight but this kinked stem caught my eye as more interesting compositionally:

Ok, we've got a deal. You bring some mushrooms, and you can have the wildlife on my doorstep. Except you may get arrested, as they do not belong to me. I'd score big time, and well you....
Love that wild flower pic. Besides the already mentioned composition, its beautiful and beautifully captured too. Nature can be so amazing- I for one would never put purple and yellow together- but there we have it. Great shot!

Thanks noelcmn..dammit why do you guys use names I can't remember how to spell...

Couple more from yesterday

This one taken with a lens I've never used much, but I pull it out now and then and try to get the most out of it. For some reason recently it's been doing better than I've ever been able to get...Makinon 135mm K mount, f2.8. This shot taken with 45mm of extension tubes, flash at f11. ISO 100 I think, don't remember and didn't look at EXIF...

Hoverfly on a flower. Not sure what the flower is, it's a bulb that blooms every fall.

We call this insect a Lovebug. Zillions of them around this time of year, hell on windshields. I've driven from here 3 hours to my mother's house, had to stop 5 times and clean these things off the windshield. I actually had to take a toothbrush to my radiator once...

Same rig, sitting on a different individual of the same flower as above. I kinda like the water droplets still not evaporated yet.

And one I've been trying to get for ages, a decent shot of a Pilteated Woodpecker flying. Only thing wrong is my 200mm is out of commission so I had to use the 135mm, but no extension tubes or flash. I think it was set on f8. This bird is a female, the male has a red cheek patch.
