Weekly challenge #266: Lifting The Mundane
Posted By: smf, 11-27-2013, 09:03 AM

Thank you very much, Tess (tessfully) for the honor of hosting this new challenge and for your excellent hosting of last week's challenge! My designation as the winner greatly surprised me. The other submitted images are excellent!

This new challenge and its title are inspired by part of "The Photographer's Mind," a book by Michael Freeman. (ISBN: 978-0-240-81517-6). Some of the subjects of photographs in that section are a crumpled beer can, a pair of shoes, a shop window, noodles, and plastic-wrapped bales of hay.

Please interpret the theme as you wish.

You might wish to experiment with lighting and point of view.

I am reminded of an exercise in which a photography student is asked to look for subjects within a small circular area she or he designates.

Many or all of the entries in this challenge likely will far surpass this image of part of a steppingstone peeking through snow.

I hope you enjoy the challenge.

Best wishes!
Stu

This challenge will run through Thursday, December 5, and close by midnight GMT (which is EST +5, CST +6 and PST +8).

Rules are as follows:

1. Post one photo (max 1024 X 1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3.Post your single photo in this thread. If it's not obvious, explain what motivated you to submit the photo and how you feel it represents the weekly theme.
4.The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5.The judge will pick the winner, who will then host and judge the next week's challenge.
6.The challenge closes after seven days. This allows a day for the judge to pick the winners.
7. Any Pentax (or Samsung) DSLR is acceptable.
8. Photos can be from any time frame, not just the week of the current challenge.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge of the next week's challenge, the winner will PM the #2 winner and pass on the baton to that person to host and judge the next week's challenge

Another great theme, Stu. One that will draw some wonderful entries.
I immediately thought of this photo. I was testing a new lens (Sigma 28-70 2.8 on a K-r) and snapping 'whatever' as you do but this one has always made me happy. A car aerial is about as mundane as it gets but it does 'lift'! I liked the smooth blue-grey bokeh behind it too.
And that strange little bit of metal keeps me in touch with some of the great minds and music of the world as I zip about the roads.

Enhancing the mundane.

My friend has a place on Sebago Lake in Maine. The views from the back porch are nice but the overhanging ornament gives it an different pleasant perspective.I've spent many an evening there with a "red solo cup" and can appreciate the different takes on an ordinary mundane setting.--charliezap

Great choice for a theme! I love trying to turn the ordinary into something interesting to look at. I hope this qualifies, as not everybody has a rubber ducky lying around... I have quite a few...

I had, in my mind, an image of a row of ducks stretching away into infinity, but this was the best I could do with two dozen, plus a folding table and one desk lamp. Taken with the K-r and kit lens.

I think this shot reflects the theme. The scene could not be more ordinary, a street in my neighbourhood, complete with tire tracks and footprints in the snow. However the fisheye is great for putting an unusual spin on things and that last minute light just before the December sun disappears makes the ordinariness interesting.

I was wandering around the house one day, wanting to take a photo, but too lazy to get out, so I settled for this humble wicker drawer.

Too Sleepy To Notice?

Here's my entry this week, taken at an event held at the Denver Botanical Gardens. Everyone with a camera was taking photos of the local TV news anchor doing a live feed, but I found the crowd more interesting than the 'scene'. Dad was engrossed with photography, but baby was too tired to care!

Water Weeds

What a great topic. This is a recent one. Just some weeds on the shoreline taken with some filters and a slow shutter speed.
