Weekly challenge #268: Long exposure
Posted By: TenZ.NL, 12-15-2013, 03:07 AM

Thanks David K, for letting me host this next challenge. You did a great job on the extensive judging and I didn`t expect to win as my favorites were Tessfully and Charlyzap.

So, the next challenge...
The previous theme was "Beyond your comfortzone", forcing us to think about our subjects, technics and enviroments, what we like and what we don`t.
This got me thinking. Being a nature-kinda guy (landscapes, macro and wildlife), I really love long exposures. You know, out in the dark with my camera and tripod, trying to capture subtle colors I can`t see, smooth out the water and catch some movement in the clouds. Or fiddling around with ND-filters and the likes to get 30s daytime long exposures, that kind of stuff.

But this is my my approach to this and I`m sure many of you have different views about long exposures. So anything with a exposure time over a second will do.
I`m anxious to see what you guys and girls can come up with

Good luck, kind regards and make my job as a judge a hard one,
Jacco

This challenge will run untill Friday 20 december, midnight (That is 23:00 UTC, which is EST +5, CST +6 and PST +8)

The fine print:
1. Post one photo (max 1024 X 1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3.Post your single photo in this thread. If it's not obvious, explain what motivated you to submit the photo and how you feel it represents the weekly theme.
4.The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5.The judge will pick the winner, who will then host and judge the next week's challenge.
6.The challenge closes after seven days. This allows a day for the judge to pick the winners.
7. Any Pentax (or Samsung) DSLR is acceptable.
8. Photos can be from any time frame, not just the week of the current challenge.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge of the next week's challenge, the winner will PM the #2 winner and pass on the baton to that person to host and judge the next week's challenge

Here's one I took in October. I was shooting this tree, the night sky, and milky way and it seemed like it needed a little something extra. So I used my little camping lantern to light paint during the 20s exposure.

I think this is faster than the 1sec+ requirement, or is it new math?

My first trip to Washington DC

I took this shot on my 48 hour visit to DC. I was able to get some really nice shots.
Shot with my K30 and Sigma 10-20 @ 16mm, f14, 30 sec, ISO 100.
It was tough to pick my favorite long exposure as I spent a lot of time taking night shots on this trip.

I took this shot from our balcony last month. It's a 15 second exposure, and it's one of only three similar shots out of 90+ attempts!

The view is towards the Indian Ocean, overlooking the Moses Mabida soccer stadium, which was built especially for the 2010 World Cup.

Here's one I shot a couple of years ago with the K7.
f10, 4 sec., ISO400. Lit by a gas barbecue lighter being waved around overhead.

Oh dear . I overlooked that requirement entirely. Thanks for pointing it out, Kyle. I'll have to change my entry.

If it's permissible, I'll enter this shot instead of my earlier too-fast picture. This was show at 30s, f/22:

This photo of a Halloween jack-o'-lantern doesn't compete with outstanding images posted in this thread by our host and others. I'm posting it because I had fun making the image and think it might be a jumping off place for some viewers.
It was captured in a dark basement with a K-x, 55 mm, f/38, 10 seconds at ISO 200.

That`s oke, Tamia. While I really liked your first image the exposuretime was indeed under a second, like SpecialK pointed out.

I think it goes without saying, if someone takes the time to set up and take a long exposure, there was a pretty compelling scene there to be photographed.
