Weekly challenge #55: Barriers
Posted By: rparmar, 04-21-2008, 02:13 AM

Welcome to the Weekly Challenge #55: Barriers

Things that come between people, which obscure or divide, which obstruct or bound. And perhaps which paradoxically show how we are all connected.

I will do my best to choose the winners based on my own rather subjective interpretations. I am working on a photo exhibition on this theme and it would be great to see what the creative group here can come up with. Best of luck!

Please submit entries until 9pm EST on Sunday 27 April 2008.

The rules are as always:

The rules:
1. Post ONE photo (max 800x800) as a response to THIS post.
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme. It can be colour or B&W, your choice.
3. You can offer as much or as little additional information as you wish, but I'd be interested to know the location/event/whatever being depicted.
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and chose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. The challenge runs for 7 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera will do or a Samsung DSLR.

Here's an example of something I did in this theme to give you some idea (though only one possible literal interpretation). Obviously it is not a contest entry!

While at first this image might appear too formal, what I like about it is the layering of four different textures: the rusted metal in front, the frosted glass, the light wire mesh and behind all the faint tracery of dark paths on white. But without the random element of the knot of wire in the top-right it wouldn't work nearly as well for me.

Who hides behind this facade? Is the knot a reminder that someone is there?

Here's my attempt.

Many of the homes in Spain have an open courtyard and gardens.

First attempt from my camera

This is cropped and zoomed and one of the first pictures I took with my K100D + kit lens:

Two barriers here, one natural and one man made due to structural failure. The river is the Mississippi River which splits Minneapolis in half. If you look closely you will see construction happening on either side of the river. What is missing in between is the 35W bridge which collapsed last summer. The state has committed resources to work 24x7 to get the bridge back up.

When I saw the theme of this week's challenge I immediately thought of this shot. Taken one mid March afternoon at the beach. DS, Zenitar 16mm fisheye.
