Weekly Challenge #56: Perspective
Posted By: atupdate, 04-28-2008, 03:37 AM

Welcome to the Weekly Challenge #55: Perspective

We all have different ways of looking at things and this week's challenge lets you show off your unique perspective. In photography, capturing a unique perspective could involve a wide angle lens, shooting from the ground up, or using an object to provide an interersting leading line.

Please submit entries by 7 AM EST on Monday, May 5, 2008.

The rules are as always:

The rules:
1. Post ONE photo (max 800x800) as a response to THIS post.
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme. It can be colour or B&W, your choice.
3. You can offer as much or as little additional information as you wish, but I'd be interested to know the location/event/whatever being depicted.
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and chose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. The challenge runs for 7 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera will do or a Samsung DSLR.

Albert Einstein also could not see this effect. He spent years believing that people were messing with his mind when they would tell him they could see it.
Sort of like quantum mechanics then?

P.S. I cannot see it either.

unless i'm just misinterpreting the instructions wrong

but i am to assume that you are to cross your eyes in a way that would combine the two images??

because that i cannot do, i can double my vision, but i cannot invert it towards the center.

I can't see the effect either, and I am quite sure it is because in my monitor the pictures are simply too big (read: the similar part's distances is too great) for me to cross my eyes enough to bring the two images together.

I went for years with out being able to do it either. But for some reason now I can. It's more then just crossing your eyes. It helps to un-focus your eyes a little as well, then try to put the picture back together. When I get it, there are actually 3 images. A 3-D one in the middle and two out of focus ones on the sides. It's weird how that works.

I could do it, but only after I took a screen shot and made it a little smaller, it seems to help.

Taken in San Francisco. I thought it was a funny perspective on the choices available to drive around the city:
Gawd, I hate those stupid cars/go karts/whatever. They can barely go 15 mph up the hills.

You're not a Cyclops are you? You need two eyes for it to work.

Sit back about 18 inches from the monitor. I can do it on my 19" monitor; I am not sure if smaller images help some folks. Try focusing at the line between the two images, then (if possible) force your eyes to cross. If you go slowly you may be fortunate to find the 'sweet spot' and the 3D image will almost jump out at you. Your eyes can feel strained if you do it for too long.

I had one course in College (many decades ago) that required one to view stereographic aerial photographs. 20 classmates had to share the 4 available pairs of stereo viewers or learn to do it the 'hard way'. I don't share well with others so I learned the manual way.

Just a heads-up for eveyone. If you are going to change your entry, please send me a PM. I am saving the images to my hard drive for easier viewing and I wouldn't want to have the wrong image on file.

Hi everybody,
my faves so far is the #1 carousel (really unusual view), the #2 ship (like if I remembered having been there, nostalgic for me), the #24 ships side-by-side (must have been humbling to stand between them) and of course the #33, for letting us see the creation of perspective as a work-in-progress.
all the best, Georg
