Weekly Challenge #293 - Power Lines
Posted By: reeftool, 08-01-2014, 08:01 AM

First, I want to congratulate Tess on her wonderful winning shot in last weeks challenge. She is unable to host the challenge this week and she asked me as runner up to fill in as the host this week.

My challenge this week is something we photograph often and complain the most about. The dreaded power lines! Very often we see the comment, "Beautiful landscape but too bad about the power lines". They're everywhere. We spend money on software and plug-ins to remove them and hours in PP trying to get the shot "right" after removing them because they rarely appear in plain blue sky only. So my challenge is to see some photos where the power lines are in a photo and actually add to the composition to make it look right.
So lets see some nice shots where those power lines, towers and poles work to make the shot better, not just something to post when testing lens sharpness.

The Challenge will run until midnight next Friday, August 8, Eastern Time (North America)

Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.

Everyone is eligible to send in their best interpretation of the given theme, as long as the photo is taken with a Pentax/Samsung camera. Themes can be subject-oriented or technique-oriented.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax (or Samsung DSLR) camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge

An example, but only one possibility of the infinite compositions possible.

Energy Transfer

I took this some years back with my Pentax LX using slide film. I recently copied it using a slide copier attachment and then played around with effect in PS Elements to get this result.

This was taken today as part of my Single In challenge. It was suggested I bung it in here, so here it is:

Taken in Costa Rica a few years ago. Until they insulated the lines , it was one of the biggest causes of deaths for these howler monkeys as well as the #1 cause of power outages

This power line ends on my front porch. I don’t know where it starts but, strangely, some years ago when power to Taos County was out for days, this line still worked.

Taken a few days ago for this month's monthly challenge with FA77 & K5II....I'd normally wait a couple of months before photographing sunsets from our deck, as then the sun sets over water etc and the power lines are not in the view....however on this night I thought they added to the shot. I haven't played with the color of this shot....is as it looked.

My entry, Krimpenerwaard, the Netherlands.

Hello all,

I was interested in taking a photo like this of an object that is usually detrimental when found in a picture for quite some time. The opportunity arose during a hike not far from where I live, finally finding a pylon that wasn't out of reach, and this is the result:

K5, DA 10-17 Fish-Eye @10mm ISO-200, f/9, 1/800s

Good luck to all entrants and greetings,
John.

Big Bug Zapper?

Hello reeftool, good theme this week!
Here's a set of lines you wouldn't want to cross, the RTD lightrail station downtown, 750 V DC.
I caught a lucky dynamic sky, right after a thunderstorm.
K-5, DA35mmAL, f/5.6, 1/25s (tripod), ISO 400.
