Weekly Challenge #294 - Abstract
Posted By: john1973, 08-11-2014, 12:50 PM

Hello everyone,

My challenge for the week is a broad one: Abstract.

Try to make an abstract picture of anything you like. As with every digital image you take post-processing is an essential part of the work-flow. But I would like to see that the composition in it self makes the image an abstract one, not by cranking the sliders in the tool you use for post-processing up to 11 as once happened in a similar challenge I hosted on the Dutch Pentax forum. One can of course use it to enhance the result you're after, but it can not be solely defined by it.

The Challenge will run until midnight next Tuesday, August 19th, Eastern Time (North America)

Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.

Everyone is eligible to send in their best interpretation of the given theme, as long as the photo is taken with a Pentax/Samsung camera. Themes can be subject-oriented or technique-oriented.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax (or Samsung DSLR) camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge

An example, but only one possibility of the many compositions possible:

Good luck everyone and looking forward to seeing your interpretation the coming week,
John.

ps. As this the firs time I'm hosting this weekly challenge, let me know if I'm forgetting something or if I'm not completely adhering to the usual routine regarding the challenge!

Open Roof?

The new Amtrak Station (behind the renovated Union Station) has a shell-like curved roofline with similar opening-shapes. Here's a stormy night sky through one opening, an odd frame to the outside view.

I took this photo in my backyard at night and I think it will qualify as abstract though I've always struggled with what the concept "abstract" really means.
I took it with my K-3 and the 1.8 50mm lens at ISO 800 F11 for 20 seconds (obviously on a tripod).
I had a couple of small flashlights under the plant and illuminated the top of the plant with a hiking headlamp using the red setting.
A small amount of LR work to adjust brightness and contrast principally and a little sharpening.

Photo Of the week Abstract

I Took this Photo of the Dome at Gardens by The Bay in Singapore, When I looked up I was struck by how the light was reflected back by the Dome.

Many lovely entries here. This was taken as part of an exercise recommended by Freeman Patterson.

My neighbors! They're quiet enough but I often feel like I'm being watched. Thankfully, there's a wire fence between us.

Encased

Can I sneak one in here? I always head out to shoot after an ice storm but usually come away with boring shots of ice-encased trees from too far away. This past December after about 1/2" of ice I tried shooting closer. Lacking a true macro lens I put the close-focusing ability of the DA16-45 to use on a silver maple branch. There was a tiny dormant bud that I thought would give a small hint of reality in an otherwise complex reflection of sunlight through the ice.

Challenge is closed!

Hi all,

Sorry for the late reply, I had to take care of some unexpected issues that made me loose sight of having to judge the weekly challenge on Tuesday. I'll post the results before the end of the day!

You'll hear from me soon,
John.
