Picture of the Week #326 9th - 23rd August 2014
Posted By: Jessesdad, 08-17-2014, 04:51 AM

Welcome to another round of Picture of the Week. This is edition # 326, covering 9th - 23rd August 2014.
POTW is a great spot to show off any shots you take in the upcoming week, or last week that you haven't processed until now. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week.

Some rules:
1) No theme, just post your favorite pix.
2) 6 or fewer images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big.
3) Any Pentax or Samsung camera, film or digital.

The current host will invite a new host via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact bluestringer, Moderator via PM.

Here are the records of previous POTW threads: 1 Peter Zack, 2 Eaglerapids, 3 rmtagg, 4 Peter Zack, 5 daacon, 6 Bramela, 7 mtnbearhug, 8 dantuyhoa, 9 gawan,10 roentarre, 11 daacon, 12 Kris, 13 mtnbearhug, 14 SCGushue, 15 daacon, 16 maxwell1295, 17 dantuyhoa, 18 daacon, 19 maxwell1295, 19(2) daacon, 20 Bramela, 21 Syb, 22 maxwell1295, 23 maxwell1295, 24 dantuyhoa, 25 Gawan, 26 Peter Zack, 27 borno, 28 daacon, 29 gawan, 30 Damn Brit, 31 maxwell1295, 32 maxwell1295, 33 dantuyhoa, 34 daacon, 35 Peter Zack, 36 Damn Brit, 37 Borno, 38 Kevint, 39 Peter Zack, 40 Timbo13, 41 daacon, 42 daacon, 43 gawan, 44 dantuyhoa, 45 daacon, 46 Rense, 47 daacon, 48 Rense, 49 borno, 50 Rense, 51 daacon, 52 Peter Zack, 53 Peter Zack, 54 dadipentax, 55 David Whiteley, 56 planedriver, 57 daacon,58 Bramela, 59 daacon, 60 gawan, 61 virgilr, 62 daacon, 63 RickL, 64 Peter Zack, 65 Peter Zack, 66 Causey, 67 daacon, 68 Bramela, 69 georgeweb, 70 daacon,71 seacapt, 72 daacon, 73 AOski, 74 Rense, 75 eccs19, 76 daacon, 77 xs400, 78 daacon, 79 Bramela, 80 Borno, 81 legacyb4, 82 daacon, 83 gawan, 84 Rense, 85 Peter Zack, 86 davef, 87 davef, 88 xjjohnno, 89 Bramela, 90 Peter Zack, 91 daacon, 92 stevebrot, 93 reeftool, 94 jezza323, 95 oldschool, 96 Iris, 97 Rense, 98 planedriver, 99 xs400, 100 Peter Zack, 101 Netuser, 102 Photolady, 103 Tamia, 104 Irishwhite, 105 Ramseybuckeye, 106 xjjohnno, 107 Bumbibop, 108 JeffJS, 109 Tpeace, 110 Nomad, 111 Photolady, 112 rparmar, 113 Peter Zack, 114 casil403, 115 Tamia , 116 JeffJS, 117 bbluesman, 118 Clou, 119 ruggiex, 120 Jimbow007, 121 jmschrie, 122 VaughnA , 123 pop4, 124 casil403, 125 woof, 126 twitch, 127 stevebrot, 128 ohce, 129 jmschrei, 130 photolady, 131 photolady, 132 bbluesman, 133 rparmar, 134 reeftool, 135 reeftool, 136 Oldschool, 137 xjjohonno, 138 KarenH , 139 Rense, 140 daacon, 141 Tamia, 142 JeffJS, 143 bbluesman, 144 fotaki, 145 fotaki, 146 Woof, 147 Bramela, 148 Bramela, 149 Tamia, 150 Nomad, 151 Clou, 152 drugal, 153 rparmar, 154 Nomad, 155 jmschrei, 156 noelcmn, 157 noelcmn, 158 rwfarnell, 159 ramseybuckeye, 160 christophleipzig, 161 JeremytheIndian, 162 SpecialK, 163 emetcalf, 164 emetcalf, 165 stevebrot, 166 rparmar, 167 Mattt, 168 JeffJS, 169 jmschrei, 170 fotaki, 171 xs400, 172 TOUGEFC, 173 TOUGEFC, 174 Warped, 175 MaryAD, 176 Davidw0815, 177 baro-nite, 178 baro-nite, 179 pentaximus, 180 lukulele, 181 lukulele, 182 rob 1234, 183 lukulele, 184 lukulele, 185 pentaximus, 186 ramseybuckeye, 187 ramseybuckeye, 188 StDevious, 189 Free Soul, 190 Clou, 191 brvnara, 192 pentaximus, 193 Noelcmn, 194 Noelcmn 195 GmcarsMAN, 196 jmschreii,197 wolfiegirl, 198 xjjohnno, 199 Arn , 200 Peter Zack, 201 bluestringer, 202 cif, 203 Rollsup, 204 noelcm, 205 Davidw0815, 206 Davidw0815, 207 cif, 208 ramseybuckeye, 209 paulh, 210 Oldschool, 211 SpecialK, 212 mecrox, 213 pentaximus, 215 bramela, 216 jmschrei, 217 Exandr, 218 Noelcmn, 219 Noelcmn, 220 sergiu, 221 sergiu, 222 sergiu, 223 sergiu, 224 sergiu, 225 sergiu, 226 sergiu, 227 sergiu, 228 Davidw08, 229 reeftool, 230 reeftool, 231 cif, 232 mecrox, 233 mecrox, 234 glennbp, 235 glennbp, 236 pentaximus, 237 pentaximus, 238 pentaximus,239 Paul, 240 Nick Nero, 241 Arnold, 242 Arnold, 243 Arnold, 244 Arnold, 245 Nick Nero, 246 ramseybuckeye, 247 ramseybuckeye, 248 Douge, 249 Douge 250 Douge, 251 Dr Orloff, 252 lukulele, 253 lukulele, 254 nosliwmit, 255 nosliwmit, 256 nosliwmit, 257 casil403, 258 casil403, 259 Davidw0815, 260 Davidw0815, 261 ruggiex, 262 ruggiex, 263 mecrox, 264 pentaximus, 265 pentaximus, 266 SpecialK, 267 SpecialK, 268 filoxophy, 269 mecrox, 270 mecrox, 271 mecrox, 272 Paleo Pete, 273 Paleo Pete, 274 geomez, 275 geomez, 276 geomez, 277 mecrox, 278 mecrox, 279 mecrox, 280 Noelcmn, 281 Noelcmn, 282 Noelcmn, 283 Noelcmn, 284 Noelcmn, 285Alkazalsir, 286 StephenHampshire, 287 StephenHampshire, 288 wolfiegirl, 289 Bucfan1234, 290 nosliwmit, 291 wolfiegirl, 292 wolfegirl, 293 ramseybuckeye, 294 ramseybuckeye, 295 josh-fuggle, 296 mattb123, 297 jcdoss, 298 jcdoss, 299 Papa Lazarou, 300 Bucfan1234, 301 Bucfan1234, 302-noelcmn, 303-noelcmn, 304-noelcmn, 305-noelcmn, 306 noelcmn, 307-atupdate, 308-atupdate, 309 mecrox, 310 mecrox, 311 mecrox, 312 Papa Lazarou, 313 Papa Lazarou, 314 lukulele, 315 lukulele, 316 cif, 317 cif, 318 mecrox, 319 mecrox, 320 pentaximus, 321 pentaximus, 322 pentaximus 323 pentaximus 324 StephenHampshire 325 StephenHampshire

Thanks to Stephen for hosting last week but it sounds as if he's been busier than a few well-photographed bees so I'll take the reigns for this week. Post away with your best shots - but - don't expect his clever and careful comments. I'll do my best to keep us rolling for the moment.

It's been a lean time with the camera but I had to take few shots of one of the churches I've been working for. Simple buildings but always lit up by the stained glass.

scomatic - smoke from either incense or a cigarette.

lukulele - I got a shot of a Gulf Frittillary almost identical to your Varegated Frittilary (first shot) but on a different tiny flower not long ago. Flowers about the same size too. Interesting...nice butterfly shots all around.

Catscradle - Great hawk shots. Not positive but I think it's a Red Tailed Hawk judging by the chest markings, I've never been able to get anything that close though, nice job. Hawks are one of my favorites, unfortunately very few seen this summer so far. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for winter, when Marsh Hawks and Red Shouldered will be here, along with maybe a couple of others. Right now it's just the occasional Red Tail...

Paleo Pete,
My cat was dozing on the back step for all intents and purposes she looked dead. My son speculates the hawk flew in looking for a meal. At any rate, the cat immediately came awake and, despite being over 16 years old and weighting well under 5 pounds, started stalking the hawk. In a confrontation she would have lost badly, Got to admire her guts though. The cat moved over and crept along the fence the hawk was sitting on where the hawk couldn't just swoop down on her. The two of them were pretty intent on each other which is why I think the hawk hung around long enough for me to get about a dozen shots. It's also was why I was able to get so close, before the hawk spooked I had crept within 10 feet of it. I'm pretty sure it was a red tail too, that is the most common hawk around here (MA). Though in the shots I got of the whole tail from the back it was brown all the way. I was disappointed that I cropped the tail in the in-camera composition in that image. I'd got the entire tail in several other shots, but none with the beak partially open like that so I went with the beak even with the tail cropped. The B&W is obviously a crop of the full length shot. The 3rd shot the hawk is staring down at my cat as she creeps along the base of the fence.

Thanks for hosting, Jessesdad!

I was on the road all weekend at multiple motorcycle events. These are from the Adirondack Vintage Rally in Lake Luzerne,NY.

Some old metric bikes.

A vintage BSA 500 thumper.

A Honda 125 Elsinore. Rare to see one this nice these days.

I don't know the age of this old Moto Guzzi. 70's I think.

Darrell, beautiful flower shots. I particularly like the isolation of the first one. So vibrant!

MichaelW - I may be biased because I have the K-5 IIs and I love that under-rated lens, the Sigma 17-70..but.. what a great shot. And welcome to POTW.

Catscradle - Magnificent bird and you're right, the mono version is beautiful. Again taken with the cheap and wonderful lens - this time the 55-300. It will become legendary as the years roll on. Love the 'old cat' story.

Welcome to Mixmaster. You can obviously shoot! That b&w of the cloud above rooftops is stunning. You may want to read up on the POTW rules with regard to when the shots need to be taken (this week or last) but I'm sure that all is forgiven. We'll look forward to the next installment.

vimbuza - That's a nice, clean and fascinating 30 sec exposure. Again, taken out of the time wondow but well worth seeing. Welcome aboard!

fduzjy - That's just cruel to a land-stranded, freezing Aussie. Looks like a nice day on the water.

SSPhotography - Vibrant shot of a confident lady. Maybe it's my monitor but the colour balance looks a bit wayward.

Johninfant - How did you light that shot? I can see why you're happy with it. Welcome to POTW.

wolvesrule - What wonderful creatures. The second shot has 'dreamy' focus appropriate to the pose but that first one is crisp as a winter's morning.

reeftool, you're talking my language - and my vintage!!! I had a yamaha 360 identical to that black 500 - except it was a deep red. And my brother rode a Honda 400/4 which I think I see in the background. So nice to see people looking after these almost ancient machines in a way I certainly never did.

Sagitta - I don't know if you've added much saturation or boosted the colours at all but that's a beauty! Just fabulous. Which lens?

Thanks for hosting, Jessesdad. Looks like some great images so far & welcome to all the newcomers
It was an unusually nice day (for August in Texas), so we went to a nearby park to grab a few shots. All taken with an *istD & a Sigma 28-90:

I punched it up, but not by much - mostly to try to highlight the clouds/reduce the blown out sunset without killing the colors in the balloons/etc. This was from the Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5.

I normally post these in the Post Your Pet A Day thread. We are fostering two puppies that were rejected by their mother. Bottle feeding them for two weeks now.

Catscradle - That's much closer than I've ever been able to get, probably 20 feet or so is my best, and that was a juvenile that hadn't learned to be wary of humans yet...Yeah the Hawk was probably thinking lunch, but cats aren't easy to sneak up on, even for a hawk, especially once spotted...

I rode a 1977 CB 550F for years. I finally gave it away last year.
You have a good eye to spot that 400! I did get a shot of it.

Thanks and sorry for disregarding the main rule of POTW.
These were all shot during my vacation which is already over :-( As you know, vacation is always too short there these shots are very recent for me. I'll do better next time

Cheers Thomas

Thanks. Always loved the proportions of the 400/4. Crazy little bike.

Paulh - that's looking like a very nice way to spend a day. Waterparks are a kids dreamworld.

atupdate - Polar & Brownie are beautiful. Lucky them that you have the heart to take care of them.

@Jessedad: This tree was next to a tungsten street lamp and this was shot at night.
