Weekly Challenge#58 Zen-like Water and Stone
Posted By: SCGushue, 05-14-2008, 07:53 PM

Welcome to the Weekly Challenge #58: Zen-like...Water and Stone

Well, I was surprised to see that no one had ever listed macro (insect or other) on the Challenges before. I was tempted to try that topic but instead thought that a subject matter common to everyone (well nearly everyone) would be water and stone. These are essential elements and I enjoy looking at the peaceful Zen like images that many post.

So, combine these elements in any form, in any context that conveys a Zen like calmness. To get things off I'll post an example image below.

HAVE FUN!!!

Please submit entries by midnight EST on Monday, May 22, (My Birthday )2008.

The rules are as always:

The rules:
1. Post ONE photo (max 800x800) as a response to THIS post.
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme. It can be colour or B&W, your choice.
3. You can offer as much or as little additional information as you wish, but I'd be interested to know the location/event/whatever being depicted.
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and chose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. The challenge runs for 7 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera will do or a Samsung DSLR.

A favorite subject of mine, and some amazing photos on this thread. Here's my submission, taken under a full moon in the South Fork of the Tuolumne River canyon.

Cypress Falls Provincial Park

I made a trip out to the park to see if I could get a good "water zen" image for this weks challenge.

The main road to the falls was closed, and I had to take an alternative back road. I got lost. Then I got a little more lost. Eventually, I got to exactly where I did not want to be.

Eventually I found the park. I was not feeling very zen.

An hour later, the fresh air, the river and the trees restored my inner calm.

Of the photos I took, this one I felt captured the feeling of the day. A torent of water, a worn rock, and dappled sunlight. And, one photographer feeling his road rage wash away.

Note: I reposted this photo with the exposure re-adjusted in post process. The previous photo was just too dark. Now I know not to edit with the lights off at night!

Dammit! I've wanted to try doing this for so long, it hurts. The never-ending flatlands surrounding me prevent me from trying this out.
Remember the forthcoming trip to Holland? Remember to drop by a few waterfalls and scenic point with a light portable tripod. Click away

There are some really awesome shots here. The shot taken by moonlight is really thinking outside the box - doesn't that open so many many posibilities!!

Hi Stephen,
Congratulations on a very challenging challenge. (and I think the judging is going to be the same)
My contribution probably needs a "little" explanation

There is the water (in frozen form) and the rock.

I would offer that the zen is the red dots (bottom 1/3rd right)...they are human beings (not hot pixels)...still some .75-1 km from the glacier face.

The place: Franz Josef Glacier, New Zealand.
The camera: K20D
The lens: Pentax DFA 100mm f2.8.

Another New Zealand shot from an Aussie
I took this on the Caitlin coast on the south-east end of the South Island. Some beautiful waterfalls in that area of the world.

Kim's Zen

This is one of my "zen" places... even though it looks chilly it is a wonderful place to be.. the river playing its song and the breeze blowing through the trees.. it is very peaceful... anytime of year..
