Project 52-6-36-shutter speed-slow
Posted By: noelcmn, 10-19-2014, 12:39 PM

Welcome to PROJECT 52-6 for the year 2014.

PROJECT 52-6-36-Shutter Speed-Slow

Images for Project 52-6-36 are to be taken between the 20th October 2014 and 26th October 2014.

Rules
1. Anyone and everyone interested in the challenge is eligible. The goal continues to be
have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques with fellow
Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a Theme and Sub-concept for you to explore.
3. Post your single picture in Project 52-6 thread for the week. Explain what
motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly
theme.
4. Some post-processing is OK (adjusting white balance, exposure, color
saturation), but let's try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images here. Try to
keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. Since this project is about technique, and not camera, shots taken by non Pentax cameras are allowed.
Cameras may be SLRs, DSLRs, Point & Shoot, Medium Format, et cetera.
6. There is one “Theme Concept” labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post
black and white, sepia, monotone, etc., for any of the other themes.
7. The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is
active to be eligible for judging.
8. Any picture taken from thread start date to listed closing date is acceptable. You may request to submit a photo outside of the time frame, but its acceptance is dependent o the judge of the week. Please try and keep to within a day or two (either way 92% the week. This is to make allowances for those that would like to participate, but for one or other reason, are not able to do so during the time given for the challenge, such as illness, weather, travelling etc.
9. The WINNER of each weekly challenge is the JUDGE of the next week's Project 52-6.
10. The Facilitator (in this case noelcmn) may participate in the challenge, provided he/she is not the judge.
11. Closing date for the challenge is Sunday at midnight in your time zone. Late entries are accepted but subject to the acceptance by the current weeks
Judge.

We move onto another Camera related challenge, this time its Shutter speed- Slow Shutter speed. Requires a lot more control, so lets see what you can come up with. BTW, there is also another Shutter speed challenge next week, for "Bulb", so don;t go shooting bulb in this challenge- though you of are of course welcome to do so-that is if you like to do the same thing again next week.

Here are some winning entries from the the past.

For slow shutter speed I set my K-5 to Shutter Priority (Tv). This allowed me to select the shutter speed, ISO and EV and the camera to select the required aperture. If I had used TAV I could have selected the slow shutter speed I wanted as well as the aperture, but then the camera would have chosen an appropriate ISO. I decided to use Tv instead of TAV as it was early morning light filtering through the trees, I was at a small stream in the woods, and I didn't want a high ISO for fear of a noisy image.

Using a tripod, my older Pentax FA 50mm f/1.7 lens, shutter priority set to 5 seconds, ISO 100, -1 ev; the camera selected f/22 for the aperture, which was great because it threw everything into focus and I got the smooth reflective colours and designs on the flowing water that I had hoped for.

Here's a long exposure from a recent evening walk by the local river.
I used a variable ND filter on my DA* 16-50 to get a 10s exposure.

With a broken tripod There is a definite limit on my slow exposures. Here is one I was able to get this week while on a mini vacation. Handheld at 1/6 with an ND filter

All but forgot about this challenge, preparing for my trip to the Kruger Park tomorrow. The best I can come up with from the shots this week is this 30s exposure. The Judge can please feel free to disqualify it if you think it is too fast for slow shutter speed.
