Weekly Challenge #59: Modern architecture
Posted By: gawan, 05-26-2008, 03:21 PM

Welcome to the Weekly Challenge #59: Modern architecture

I am searching a picture that tries to show the spirit of modern architecture. I think this is not just a postcard picture of a famous building - I am searching for an unusual and somehow interesting view or angle to any modern architectural building or construction you think qualifies (along with buildings also bridges and industrial constructions will do).

EDIT: see also my in-between-note: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/257168-post30.html

Please submit entries till midnight GMT on Monday, June 2, 2008.

HAVE FUN!

The rules are as always:

The rules:
1. Post ONE photo (max 800x800) as a response to THIS post.
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme. It can be colour or B&W, your choice.
3. You can offer as much or as little additional information as you wish, but I'd be interested to know the location/event/whatever being depicted.
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and chose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. The challenge runs for 7 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera will do or a Samsung DSLR.

CDG Airport

I mostly shot street photography, but now and then I still capture some nice architecture. This one is from a trip to Paris last year. And by the way - this is my first entry ever on this fine forum!

I dont know if this qualify or if this looks like a postcard photo. It is not in Paris but a clone in Las Vegas.

Bridging the Gap

Really interesting the mill-museum in Minnesota, thanks for posting this!

I'd also like to see more pics of the jaw's wooden architect's house, wonder if there are more windows on the other side of it?

JimmyDL, really good perspective and maybe I can get a somewhat similar shot in a station here in Berlin, it looks remarkably similar.

BTW the fake Eiffel Tower gives me kind of vertigo, not too postcard at all.

I'd like to post as out-of-competition (kind of POTW-style) and here's the story with the picture. It is the Berlin new national gallery from Bauhaus' architect Mies van der Rohe and is an icon of classic modern architecture (deservedly so, just a roof on stakes). In the background, you see part of what was built after the wall came down in one of the city centers, Renzo Piano putting his stuff together.
Bon weekend, Georg

Hi Georg,
I wont post more photos here as its only for the comp. i think, you can look at the house here if the link works, thanks for the interest, the Architect who designed this house is very much into natural materials and we love building houses for him and his clients.
SmugMug Photo Sharing. Your photos look better here.

Another lot of great shots, Georg that new art gallery looks wonderful, I do enjoy pavilions with floating roofs.

Frank's hallway is a very nice compostion, the reflection off the floor is nicely captured.

You asked for modern

Some very diverse shots - well done all

Well this is a modern as I have. This is in Las Vegas back in 2007. I will be there again in October this year it will be interesting to see the progress. This place is called the Cosmopolitan - it will be a self contained community with enough amenities and facilities (including its own fire station I believe) you would never have to leave! Cost wise last I heard was about 7 billion but I am sure it has gone up.

Thanks for the post Georgweb, I'll take it as an entry anyway

Just for everybody's information, in my mind "modern" is not the same as "current", I mean modern in an art historical sense, as beginning from, say, from the early 20th century, including architectural style initiated by architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Alvar Aalto and others, BUT including of course all current architecture also and from unknown architects as well.

Idea is to catch something of the spirit on modern/current architecture, be in the whole or in the details...

Also I am not rejecting "post card pics", I only meant that your post don't have to be like those master peace's that end up to post cards

This is just an appetizer for you guys (Kiasma art museum in Helsinki, detail):

Hi jaws,
your link is working, could see the window side and the sliding shades (are they?), aah beautiful :-)

Dave,
your Las Vegas shot is as razor as it gets (just on the edge of oversharp on my monitor, but just fine for my taste).
A question to you concerning your pictures of the Legislative Building in the POTW thread. Both of these look quite fuzzy towards the left edge - very much different to this awesome Las Vegas pic. Would be nice to know which lens for which and the basic postprocess if you can remember. Answer could go into the POTW thread also, if it'd be off-topic here.

Keep it going, Georg
